So I got some money for my birthday last week and I decided to break down and buy a HDD based mp3 player. Well I was at frys looking at the Nomad Zen NX (or whatever its called) but its rather bulky, I walked around the corner and saw the Ipod on display and started playing around with it, I really like it. I was comparing prices on the net and saw it for 379 at amazon. Then I saw the IRiver hdd player and its got a lot of the functions of the Ipod and its 80 dollars less for the same sized drive.

I <3 my iPod.

IMO, best thing about the iPod is that you're going to be able to find more/better accessories than you'll be able to find for the iRiver. the wired remote is especially useful when you're using your iPod in the car or while jogging.

Well I'm considering these as well, what turns me off it that Ipod's relatively weak battery life, and possible expensive battery replacement. But Ipod does look damn good.

weak battery? I have it and I don't notice this. Not to mention it's about $50 to replace the battery yourself which will last more than 2 years in most cases. I'm tired of people ragging on the iPod when they don't know the facts.

my iPod is about 2 years old (bought it a year ago, but I bought it off eBay). never had a problem with the battery life. I take the car adapter with me on long road trips, but it holds up fine on a 7 hour drive to visit the grandma up in new hampshire.

that is actually one bad thing about the iPod, it can't double as a usb drive. The iPod Mini however can I believe, but doesn't use standard usb cables. Does the iRiver?

you sure about that? I've never had a problem using my 2nd Gen iPod as a portable hard drive.

Well I'm kinda used to the 20 hour battery life that my MD gives me, and the IRiver has 16, which is not bad.
But 8 hours for IPod? that is a big downgrade for me in the battery life department. That is the only reason that I have yet to pull the trigger.

Yes. It's something I'm adamant about having (I sort of see it as an affront to buy what is basically a hard drive and have the company smugly say "nuh uh! no hdd for you! Ha!"), but am just as adamant about not paying $450 for a USB hdd with an lcd screen & mp3 decoder.. and as such, I don't have an mp3 player or portable hdd yet :( If I were uberrich though, I'd buy the iriver in a heartbeat and be happy as a pig in sh!t with it :p I've done a lot of research into them and decided that it's the one I want. Problem is I could get a used damn notebook for what the iriver costs and get a lot more functionality, at the cost of battery life.

Some don't allow you to store files at all, and some allow you to store files ONLY after installing the proprietary software on the pc you're hooking it up to... A precious few actually follow the universal mass storage standard, which is pretty much plug & play. If I have to give a friend ad-aware or a codec or something, I don't want to dig out a CD to install the software on their computer first to read my portable hdd - especially since I could buy a damn portable usb hdd for under $100. This is a HUGE peeve of mine with the companies that make these thigns. They're already bending over the customer & slathering their rear with vaseline... the LEAST they could do is allow them to use their portable hdd as... *GASP* a portable hdd! the horror!!! Honestly I'm not sure if the Ipod is useable as such, and for the price it damn well better be - but it's still an apple, has no FM tuner, and sh!t battery life.

Edited for bad drunken grammar

the iRiver is a fine product, but how often are you away from any type of power source for +8 hours anyways?

actually I'm not... but I know you need the iPod cable to connect it. Can the iRiver connect with any usb cable?

I believe so, don't see why not. If you look at the product pics on Newegg, the box boasts "ultra-fast usb 2.0 transfers", which to me insinuates having a standard connector - only a company like Apple could & would NOT have usb connectivity, because that would just demonstrate too much of the simplicity they brag about yet fail to achieve.

Its not always just that, I got the iriver because I dont want to have to take it out of my car/backpack every day to charge it, id rather just charge it weekly.

I originally had a Zen Xtra, but sold it and bought a Iriver H120. Could not be happier. Especially now that Iriver has started listening to its customers. Check out misticriver.net

Not the same thing but the wife bought a Iriver flash player and she is pleased with the product. She read reviews everywhere and everyone rated the sound quality tops and great customer service. Flash player is not what your looking for but it says something about the build quality at least.

This is definitely the guy you want to take advice from right here.

I spent a couple of weeks trying decide between the two myself and I went with the 15Gb iPod because I got a discount through work. A co-worker has the iHP-120 and is very happy with it. Frankly, I think you'll be fine with either, and I'm sure someone who has owned both is a rare thing. I have no problem with XP recognizing my iPod as removable storage and I've only gotten a low battery warning once. Also, if you have Firewire, then USB is not an issue. Read reviews so you know exactly what you're getting and go for what's most important to you. As I've said, either way I think you'll be very happy.

Oh and FYI I bought my wife an iRiver flash mp3 player awhile back and it's a nice little device. I believe it has a proprietary USB cable.
