iPod can double as a 20GB firewire drive if you want it to. Just check the box for "enable disk usage" and it's done.
As a iPod owner, I've never run out of battery, iTunes integration is seamless and it's never messed up on me. Don't know what else to say. Firewire makes it ridiculously fast.

If you look at the product pics on Newegg, the box boasts "ultra-fast usb 2.0 transfers", which to me insinuates having a standard connector - only a company like Apple could & would NOT have usb connectivity, because that would just demonstrate too much of the simplicity they brag about yet fail to achieve.

You can hook up the iPod w/ USB, you just can't use a standard cable. And for the iRivier it doesn't matter if the box says that, they could also use a special cable.

I actually have both the Iriver IHP 120 and the IPOD (forgot what generation but i know it has no dock adapter)
anyway, they are both 20 gig, and i actually prefer the Iriver over the Ipod just because the battery life on it is a little better
and i don't always have to carry around an adapter.

Also the Iriver 120 can be plug in with a typical USB cable. My Ipod only has firewire so that can be a bit of a problem with some older computers.

I don't need all the functions of the Iriver, but I'm definitely not going to be staring at my Ipod all day long anywayz, so why do i care if the Iriver is not as sleek as the Ipod.

Just my 2 cents.

I use to think the iPod was the best thing in the world also... until I got an iHP-120 :)

This is definitely the guy you want to take advice from right here.
I've done a lot more research on them than many people who have one. Further, Apple computers are costly for what they do, why would their other products differ?

I <3 my iPod.

IMO, best thing about the iPod is that you're going to be able to find more/better accessories than you'll be able to find for the iRiver. the wired remote is especially useful when you're using your iPod in the car or while jogging.

You don't have to find & buy a wired remote, the iRiver comes with one ;) It's lighted to boot.

The battery life is imo the winning factor though. Regardless of how often you're away from electricity for 8+ hours, having to constantly charge the thing would grate on my nerves.
