Poll: 4 in 10 think there should be non-binary gender options on forms

I don't know or really care about why others do or don't. My reason is privacy. The vast majority of forms and websites simply do not need to know. I only enter that kind of information on financial, government or medical forms. Shopping sites have no reason for it.

I agree, if the information requested is not necessary to the purported purpose of a form, leave it out. If the party that created the form has an issue with this, walk away from the transaction.

I use "prefer not to say" when it's an option, which is fairly often.
I suppose it depends on the level of data accuracy they're after.

In light of how often things have been changing recently, would it be offensive to change the question to "biological" sex instead? So have 3 options:

1. Biological male
2. Biological female
3. Prefer not to say

You're either male, female or pretending to be something you're not. Why not have all the fields that way? It's possible there are white people who self-identify and pretend to be Asian or 50-year old's having a mid-life crisis who pretend to be 19. If you can change your gender simply by claiming to be something different you should be able to change your race, age, income and education the same way.

"You're either male, female or pretending to be something you're not."

^^^ Perhaps there should be a box to select ' Insolent, Judgemental Moron'?

"How do you market tampons to a non-binary gender?"

Why should sites 'market (aka Spam)' stuff at all? Why can't a single account for a household buy all sorts of things?

How are you defining "biological"? What is the end goal here? Is it more useful to track what someone popped out of the womb with, or how they actually function in society?

There can be in your world. It can be on the line right under "clueless, the world revolves around however I'm feeling today snowflake" and right above "near-sighted sexually ambiguous water-breathing Native American wombat with 3 penises" among the 42,921,723,045,409,666,117 possible options so that nobody is left without a choice that perfectly describes how they view themselves.

For someone tossing around the term "snowflake," you seem awfully bothered by something that has no meaningful impact on you whatsoever. Perhaps you should reflect on why you're so triggered by things that aren't meant for you?

You don't really have to answer this for the most part. All of it is data mining. You can maybe look at it as overall beneficial: used in demographic data for all sorts of purposes: public policy, public health, funding base, etc...or pretty nefarious: also demographic data used by actuaries to feed corporations pinpoint information into exactly how to "screw you over" in new, very specific ways!

I find it harder and harder to ever separate the two overall categories of use for this data: data scientists all over the world are just contracted to mine this shit, wherever available, and this data is purchased at a premium because it is infinitely valuable to the companies that want to know your habits, and they run all of this through R or whatever, daily, return the results, ....and we're all "getting screwed," basically. ....you barely have to fill out any forms, now. You're actively volunteering the same information with each digital product you purchase and use.

I would say primarily from a medical standpoint, especially for certain medicinal drugs that are designed for different genders.

If you are a company why waste money marketing tampons to humans with penises.

That's maybe not an especially helpful definition, depending on what the drug's mechanism is, and whether it's dependent on an estrogen-based or testosterone-based interaction sort of thing.

I agree and personally I think that Transsexual people are really weird and need help. I wonder just how many "Transsexuals" only believe that they are and not actually are?

You're born with a penis or you're born with a vagina. It's VERY rare to be born with both...or neither.

That's okay, I think you're really weird and need help too. Also, "transsexuals" is not the preferred nomenclature, dude.

It's almost 2020 and it's unbelievable how many people are so close-minded and think in terms of black and white only. In my experience there is always a grey area. If someone is doing something like or believe in and their not hurting anyone then I say live and let live. It's not like they have a choice unlike those who chose to be a assholes by dictating other lives.

Cause the aclu wants menstrual justice.

I guess society is going to hell in a hand-basket. At one time all we had to worry about was getting drafted and having your dead body rot away in the jungles of Vietnam.

Now we have some real serious issues to get in each other's face about.

It's Ma'am

It's a mental health problem.

Snowflakes are gonna snowflake - but if we want scientific data than the question is male or female only. Not what you are feeling like today.

We spend much too time and tax dollars on the fringes of the population.

I'm not going to click the link (because at first glance it looks like a moron bait site) but I'm assuming its for females who identify as men and this is specifically about situations where only gender specific bathrooms are available.
