Peace corps work could be physically demanding, grueling and in a forward deployed like scenario.

Even community service could build mental toughness, like working a homeless shelter or building low income housing or even doing civil projects with the Corps of Engineers.

Yes but another demand was that it wouldn't involve deployment.

I still think that basic training is good for everyone but you're making a good point. As long as they stay in their barracks when not in the field and have to cook and clean for themselves when in the field.

What I'm looking for is the character building of boot camp, not just the physical strain but the comraderie you get to, the discipline, the fucking forcing you to grow the fuck up.

I'll pass.

There is no connection between a community and being in the military. We don't need communities whose common ground are military service. I disagree with the notion that the US needs a standing military to protect itself and required service would necessitate a standing army. We already have an issue, in this country, of an us vs them mentality and required military service would perpetuate that.
If you wanted to get rid of our standing army and go back to state controlled militias then maybe required basic training might obtain your goals. That however is an unlikely scenario.

The bolded is exactly the problem. The Military has become a service that employs the unemployable and everyone views this as great while it's not, it's just a massive waste of money and resources because when push comes to shove we can't really use these people, we have to call in the Brits or private firms to do the job.

We'll disagree on this forever and there is no common ground between us at all so there is no use continuing this conversation, you completely skipped every point I made to rebut what I never even argued to make your own point and that is no way to have a discussion.

I've met quite a few people in the military (who are now out) and they still are not what I would considered, "grown up".
"comraderie" is another term for teammate. We don't need more of that team mentality in this country, we need people to start thinking on a much larger scale. That's why I would support community work or projects designed to better the community, country, or the world.

I'm not following you. I completely agree with your first paragraph unless you are simply restating what my opinion is.

As to your second paragraph; I'm not aware of a discussion requiring all parties to agree with each other. If you can't support your view just say so, if you think my view has no merit, just say so. I didn't ignore your points at all, I just don't think you made a strong case for them.

I think you're wrong, many other nations are returning to the idea of basic training (which is what boot camp is) for all citizens. Most western nations have had that for quite some time and Israel stil has.

Have we gotten so soft and weak that we can't handle what other nations have no problem with? Also, boot camp isn't that straining and people are given a chance to work on their own free time to make sure they can fit the lowest standards. Anyone who can't do that in the end is just a lazy bum.

and yet somehow we police the world with 11 super carriers and an all-volunteer military....

you want to build community and relationships? peace corps and americorps are how those things happen. literally, they help build communities and relationships. and simultaneously, you improve other people's opinions of america and build tons of soft power.

i agree that the whole military idolatry has gone overboard. you can thank 9/11 (and ensuing afghanistan/iraq) for that.

You do realize that there are still midwives that do this in Texas and that there is no paperwork whether they are illegal or not? It is actually something that was brought up today in another discussion I had.

But fuck them, and fuck you too, your vote should be dismissed on grounds of grave mental illness. You are quite clearly so delusional that you live in a fantasy world with Pixie Melania and the Elv Trump who are wonderful godlike creatures that just spread love wherever they go.

I mean, that's the only explanation for your support, if you were living in reality and watched Trump curtsy to a Saudi Arabian Prince, salute the general of a hostile nation and tell Putins boys top secred information that he'd just gotten from an ally then you, as an American should be absolutely appaled. When you listen to your supposed God-King state that he wants to save American jobs and invokes tarriffs against former allies just to remove sanctions on Russian producers of the same materials so the imports come from there instead, what is going on in your mind?

Is it that Trump is so very intelligent that you can't comprehend this and thus he's playing 469 dimensional ingergalactic chess or is it that he's fucking owned but the oligarchs of Russia and the Prince of SA who collectively own 95% of his fucking business's debt?

For you it seems to be the former which would put you right into straight jacket territory of delusional disorder.
Have you ever watched a snail slither along the edge of a straight razor?

TERM LIMITS

I don't see how that would help but could you expand on that? Term limits for who and for how long?

So. much. this.

Congress will never do it. It must be done by a Convention of States held according to Article V of the Constitution. https://conventionofstates.com/

Yes because term limits is working so well in states that have them. It moves the institutional experience from elected officials to lobbyists.

Term limits is yet another example of bumper sticker logic that fails in the real world.

For everyone from president to dog catcher, no self-serving "career politicians" 8-years max and out.

And what exactly would that accomplish? Would politicians be less likely to be looking for a post career with big money? Would politicians be more likely to write better (ie less big money interests) legislation? Would politicians be more likely to compromise and work together?

I'm just trying to understand what problems you think you'll be solving by your plan?

The career politician and their corruption, greed, and self-serving motives.

Lol, so corruption, greed, and self serving, only occurs when a politician has been in office for a while?

I've got some bad news for you.

Convert all golf courses into medium-to-high density housing. Minimum of 40% required to be subsidized.
Why golf courses? Some are obvious waste of good land that could be better served based on their location but seems more like and anti-elite proposal to me.
