Too many of them nowadays...

so the dozen or so stories is too many for the how many hundreds of thousands of officers? That makes sense.

How often do you think this kind of stuff happens without being reported?

The bottom line is that people in power can no longer be trusted to obey the laws they are sworn to uphold. I've seen too many cops blatantly break traffic laws for no reason.

I mean, police aren't bad, I just think the standards for becoming (and continuing to be) a cop are abysmally low.

I also have to question just how much of this he instigated; his writeup makes him sound like he was being uncooperative from the beginning.

yes it is. just in the last 7-8 years!

I'm hearing one side of the story here, it will be interesting to see if the airport can produce the surveillance videos of the incident to see which side of the story holds up. Per his own admission, it sounds like the cyclist was going the wrong way on a one-way service road, which is a pretty clear violation...

I'll let you ride out along here', referring to the one-way service road that parallels the main airport egress, but traveling against the marked flow of traffic, and that connects to Post Road, Fort Snelling, and so forth.

I also like the part where the cop orders him to get down on his knees, yet the guy jumps on his bike and pedals away yet is surprised when they subdue and taser his belligerant ass.

Officer Wingate then ordered me to 'get on my knees'.

I replied that that was absurd, that there was no basis for that as I wasn't doing anything threatening to him...
... I then got on my bike and began to leave.

I was instantly and with absolutely no verbal warning whatsoever attacked from behind and thrown to the ground....

His summary is classic...

On one level this is a personal case for me, and an important test of cycling civil rights, but at an even deeper and more profound level it is about the Constitutional Rights of all of us and whether we will allow them to be trod upon.

... more like a hippie cyclist was stopped for going the wrong-way on a posted one-way road (as indicated in his own statement), got caught and when he smarted off to the police and decided to ignore their orders and try to ride away got what he had coming. Simple solution, don't break the law and then act like a jackass about it.

The Minneapolis (red) Star Tribune tends to love the police brutality stories like this, true/false or otherwise - I'm sure it would be front page fodder if the victim was black or a war protester. It'll be interesting to see if this hits the usual local rags or just turns out to be another crackpot looking for his 5 minutes of internet fame trying to turn his arrest into some sort of Civil Rights issue. Somebody call Al Sharpton!

Well, at 21, everything is still fairly new to me 😀

And I meant the people who upheld the law, not necessarily the people in power, but I suppose the lack of trust goes through all levels of the system.

I also have to question just how much of this he instigated; his writeup makes him sound like he was being uncooperative from the beginning.

Yup had he started out by complying with their initial request the whole situation would have been much different.

It sounds like they likely over-reacted, but he was being an obnoxious little sh!t. If you don't go into a police encounter with a gigantic chip on your shoulder you probably won't have any issues.

to be fair the guy did attempt to leave while talking to them.

" explained that I would follow the first and most reasonable, safety-wise, of the conflicting orders given to me, and then said 'I'm going to wish you both a good evening, and hope the rest of it goes better than this has gone.' I then got on my bike and began to leave.

I was instantly and with absolutely no verbal warning whatsoever attacked from behind and thrown to the ground. I received wounds to chin and arm. The impact put a new casing crack on my helmet. My glasses were thrown off by the impact and bounced several feet away"

takeing off when the officers have odered you to fallow the law is nto a bright idea.

i think whatever he got is what he deserved.

no but trying to flee (wich is what he did) does.

the cops were talking to him telling him he is breaking the laws (rideing the wrong way on a one way is against the law) the then says ok thanks and hops on his bike and try's to take off. they yank him off his bike.

As I lay still on the pavement, Officer Wingate walked over to my glasses and smashed them into the ground with his boot.

LOL, I'm sure it was like high school all over again.

violation of the law = citation
flee / avoiding arrest = put under restrain

tasering >>>> putting under restrain

this is like the kid in the library redux. taser = substitute for a gun. taser != next escalation level after citation

after you try to take them down, if they resist any more, you tase them.

I don't understand why the taser is necessary. He's a farking cyclist. Cops did fine without tasers, I think they're just causing more problems.

Um, how was he attempting to flee? He was not under arrest. He was not being detained. What, exactly, was he fleeing from?

Dont officers usually wear black shoes? I thought only motorcycle police wore boots.

...while I'm on a minor rant, why don't joggers ever use the sidewalk? They always jog in the streets around here. Not just a little bit, but three feet from the four foot wide sidewalk with nobody on it. Seriously, I want to know why.

The blacktop or asphalt is a lot softer than the cement sidewalk and easier on the knees.

I don't really agree with the Tazer portion IF the story is true as he represented it, which it probally isn't.
