Police mace the hell out of peaceful OWS protesters

Pepper spray is used to subdue people who are unruly or out of line. So far as I can see the video just shows the students sitting there, peacefully. Pepper spray was definitely uncalled for.

2. They don't ( at this point they're trespassing)
3. Cops get called in and ask them to leave
4. They don't

At this point what else are the cops supposed to do. Should the cops just say "Oh Well I guess there's nothing we can do" and leave.

According to some in this thread, yes. These "adult" children should be exempt from the law because they're just so adorable.

They used to simply pick them up and drag them away(usually to a paddy wagon). That's what they should have done.

Btw Pepper Spray IS a dangerous tool if you don't know who you're spraying. Spray someone with a pre-existing health issue or an allergy and you can maim/kill them. And I don't think civil disobedience or being a general PITA like a lot of the occupy bandwaggoners is deserving of a death sentence.

If any of you were at Foley Sq. a few days ago, you'd see that the OWS participant-base consists largely of normal, middle-aged, working class citizens, not unlike 99% of this forum. So the kids are sitting there, UC Davis files a case against them (and names who exactly as a defendant?), which brings them in front of a judge, the the school makes a motion to remove the kids? Get a grip kid. Doesn't sound like you know how the legal system or universities work.

It's a CA public school...they can't "not allow it."

No exactly wrong wrong and wrong in a nation of laws. The cops are supposed to arrest them one by one, throw them in jail, and charge them with the crime of trespassing. And if they do not resist arrest, violence by the police is uncalled for.

Which are the same tactics Dr. Martin Luther King and Gandhi called for. When they are not enough jails to hold them all, the existing order has a problem.

But when the cops cheat and use un needed violence, it only gives more credibility to any movement. Bull Conner was the best thing ever for the civil rights movement. And Bull Conner will always have human turd wantabees from our boys in blue, or should we better compare them with Nazi Brown Shirts?

There was no need for the Pepper Spray. They were sitting there, easily situated for simply dragging away. Cops have become increasingly Lazy and increasingly Brutal at the same time with these "Non-Lethal" tools.

You may be absolutely right. It just depends on the policy of that particular department. Some require some sort of physical resistance before they can escalate to pepper spray. Some may not. One could make the argument that pepper spray, while uncomfortable, causes no real injury. And is therefore a safer alternative to physical removal of a resistant demonstrator. I wasn't there so I don't know what steps the officers took before that clip began.

And it would have been a cool science experiment on a row of protestors locked arm in arm. Taze one and see how far down the line the shock goes. 🙂

I don't know anything about the Portland business but the video is on state property, in other words, public property, in other words, the protestor's property, and mine, and all CA residents.

I represent universities for a living and we are having meetings next week (school officials and us, the legal team) to come up with a game plan on how to deal with these types of situations. We will show this video on how to NOT deal with the situation. The whole blocking foot traffic issue is not going to sell well in front of a jury if something like this happens on one of our campuses.
