so i see 7 different guns. figure about 1,000 per gun.

i dont see anything scary about this..

article-liguns5-1204.jpg

Does this story scare you? He claims he doesn't sell any of them but was caught traveling to another county with a load of weapons, probably for sale. Or maybe he was going hunting and the hydrocodone was to drug the deer. His neighbors sure seem to think he's a nice guy and they think the destruction of firearms that have had the serial numbers filed off of them to be a waste.

Nice neighborhood...lol!

Ok why the hysteria over having a lot of ammo? I know many people who do a lot of shooting and having 10K rounds of ammo is normal if not on the low side. on a typical Saturday day at the range is very common to go through 4-5K rounds. Is there a NY law that limits how much ammo one can have?

where i live the only law this guy broke and deserved to be arrested for is impersonating a LEO.

reporters are stupid.

that's a 2700 round magazine.... lol yea ok.

I keep a couple thousand of each caliber I shoot... So yeah. Non gun owners don't understand that.

NYS passed the SAFE act after Sandy Hook. He is probably in trouble for the following weapons violations:

- Unregistered semi-automatic rifle (Most NYS owners refused to register after law was signed)
- Possession of high capacity magazines.

Of course impersonating law enforcement isn't helping.

There is no law against having in your possession a large quantity of ammunition.

The fact that he had forged documents, impersonating an officer is a problem, but there is nothing particularly abnormal about the guns and ammo. I know plenty of people that have way more ammo than that at home.

Hysteria over nothing.

Is impersonating a Federal Air Marshall a felony?

If it is not it should be.

If it is that would be the reason for the warrant.
And whether the firearms are legal or not committing a felony while armed is serious.

I have no problems with the number of firearms if they are legal or the amount of ammo. It looks like he had 7 different firearms so a 1000 rounds or so for each does not seem like too much to me.

When my father and I was shooting clays we would go through 200+ of 12 gauge a day 2-3 times a week. So a 1000 would not be a two week supply.

I just bought my first pistol about 3 months ago and I shoot 200-300 rounds every all day trip to the range. I spend one full day a week at the range. So a 1000 is less than a months worth. I don't have over 200 rounds right now because I started reloading. But, I do have the empty brass so I could load that much if I had the powder and primers. Once I get comfortable with my ability I'll probably cut back to one trip a month.

As far as I know he only goes to the range every other year and shoots a box per trip and bought a lifetime supply by the case to save money.

But, impersonating a Federal Air Marshall would be all the reason for me to want him prosecuted.

This story is full of holes and I cant be upset one way or the other until I got solid information.

Only vehicle magazines carry that much ammo and we didnt get info on the gun or the caliber.

This guy sounds like a typical armchair commando and I'm not really scared of them. They never actually do anything.

Impersonating an Air Marshal is the much more serious issue here and I'd be concerned about that even if he had no guns or ammo at all.

And I'm betting his knife was a typical pocket folder which in New York is probably a good excuse for cops to kill a man, but in the civilized world its normally considered a mark of a gentleman to keep a pocket knife on him.

I found another article on New York Daily News. I dunno about their accuracy but it looks like there are a few more details here.

[He] was driving around Long Island with ballistic body armor and a loaded AR-15 assault rifle

Cops also recovered numerous vials of prescription insulin and steroids used to increase muscle growth. Vicars didn’t have prescriptions for the drugs.

Cops and federal authorities were following up on the tip and surveilling Vicars’ 2014 Dodge Durango — which was tricked out to look like an undercover emergency vehicle...

Seven illegal firearms ... were found in the 49-year-old’s SUV and Syosset home after an exhaustive search, police confirmed.

...

Vicars said nothing as he pleaded not guilty on multiple weapons possession charges at Nassau County Criminal Court Friday afternoon, where he was ordered held on $300,000 bail.

...

Investigators are trying to determine how Vicars had gotten all the unregistered weapons and the fake ID.

Scary considering guns are not easy to legally procure in New York. What was he planning?

"...a tactical vest and three high-capacity magazines carrying 8,300 rounds"

WOW, that some high capacity magazines! I have never heard of a magazine with a capacity of 2767 rounds each -- where can I get one? That many rounds would weigh about 232 pounds not counting an magazines.

Going through 4-5K rounds is going to be pretty pricey, I mean like thousands of dollars. Depending on the cartridges used we are probably talking a minimum of $0.25/round but could be more than $1/round so figuring the lower number that would still be over a grand. Hand loading or bulk by of crap ammo might be a tad cheaper, but still many hundreds of dollars.

I have about 800 rounds in my safe right now, cost about $80.

3x 50 round Monarch 9mm @ 8.99 per 50
1x Remington .22LR 350rd @$27
2x 380 Perfect (Wal-Mart) 50-packs at 12.50 ea

About a week ago, I had twice that much.

We actually blew through 350 rounds of .22LR at the range in about 1.5 hr a week ago. Also went through 150 9mm and about 50 .380. .22LR in particular is hard to find, especially if you have a gun like mine that only 'likes' certain brands. So when you do find it in stock, you stock up.

8000 rds is a bit extreme, but not as extreme as some of the drama lovers here might think. It's pretty normal for gun owners to have 500-2000 rounds in their safe from what I've seen.

3 magazines carrying 8300 rounds, perfect for the capable firing 20 rounds per second assault rifle from another thread. :D

I don't see anything special/out of ordinary about this guy weapons and ammo cache except the fake ID and armour with fake markings.

Please. A quick check reveals that 9mm ammo is $200/1000, 5.56 is more like $300/1000.

I mean, you blow through $800-$1200 of ammo in a typical saturday at the range? really?

Do you not realize that having 10,000 rounds in the casa is really rather unusual outside the small community of extreme enthusiasts?

Looks like one of those guys who has a fantasy for being law enforcement. I knew a neighbor in the past that bought a CHP bike at auction and refurbed it to have the full patrol kit, and drove around in a black uniform with his pistol.

As far as I know he never went so far as to counterfeit ID or badge, he just seemed to get a kick out of people thinking he was a cop.

<shrug> Some people do, just like some people marathon watch Star Wars episodes 1-6 back to back or others go see the Wagner's Ring Cycle at the opera. Personally my hands hurt from thinking about loading up that many magazines. Likewise some folks think nothing about dropping a couple grand in an hour or two at Vegas, so someone spending $800-1200 on their hobby isn't a stretch either.

You'd be surprised. I'm barely an enthusiast and I currently have 3k+. Granted, 3/4 are .22lr , so it's a bit cheaper.

I'm not saying he wasn't up to something, but 10k rounds is not a massive amount.

Depends on the ammo. .22lr is pretty cheap and with the recent and not totally over shortage I grab extra .22 when it is convenient. I have around 5k rounds on hand. I also tend to buy a little more target ammo than I shoot on a given trip and I go to the range three times a month. I figure buy it while I have the means and if I'm a short on cash I can still enjoy my hobby later. Also, with the Governor election if Gavin Newsom gets elected there may well be another shortage of all calibers and I am mindful of that. I am far from an extreme case and many that I shoot with buy ammo by the case because of the price break. It very much depends on disposable income and age.

Not really. Gun enthusiasts stock up in fear of an ammo shortage like we had after Sandy Hook. Guns are useless without ammo, and the only way to be sure you won't run out is to stock pile. 10K rounds is nowhere close to extreme.

Think this guy's ammo and guns are some kind of an anomaly? I know several people who have at least that much.

I love to "plink" at the range so me and my daughter both have .22 rifles. Check the price for 1K .22 rounds, pretty damn cheap.

Of course it doesn't look like we are talking about .22 ammo so I guess it's really moot. I do personally have quite a lot of ammo if you want to just count each round. Money invested into said rounds, not nearly what you think since so many are .22.

I do run some rounds through my .40 that I conceal carry but that shit gets expensive so no way in hell am I blowing through thousands of rounds in a day. I might shoot low hundreds (non .22) at best on a day that I'm really having fun and have dickall else to do. Fuck I'd probably quit loading the mags after 300/400 or so, I don't have any "quick loader" for my .40, probably because of the cost of ammo and only having 2 mags has never necessitated it.

In Vegas you can also spend $800-1200 in a few minutes shooting a mini-gun and see how much ammo larger than .22 really costs.

Why would your governor have an effect on the availability and/or pricing of ammunition? I could understand if you were talking about the actual guns but ammo? Is he throwing out an ammo tax or something?

Some people spend that in the same amount of time non stop every day just owning a yacht I imagine.

I doubt they are hanging out on the ATOT forums worried about it too much.

Go figure.
