Then that darned First Amendment gets in the way, and all sorts of tacky fine expectations fall away. I respect Sheehan's opinon more than that asshat moron who gave the speech, last night.

The classic example of a realistic limit on free speech is shouting "Fire!" in a theater. Guess she forgot her matches. :p
Of course the police apologized, they had too, they were getting a PR backlash.
Thanks for your OPINION. Of course, you're welcome to it, and shock of shock, nobody's going to arrest you for dangling it, here.

It was a fire..see the way she was making Bush sweat :D

In all fairness, I support her cause, but I don't support her trying to turn a SOTU speech into press time for her. In all fairness she was warned before she went in, and broke the rules. She deserved what happened to her.

I blame her less than the Senator who invited her. The whole thing was obviously a publicity stunt, and it had the desired effect. IMO she is a bit of a wacko whose 15 minutes should have been long since over, but yet again she makes President Bush look weak.

What do you think he was doing before he went in, vocal drills? You wouldn't know it by his performance!

Freedom of speech is not absolute...

That might be, but in this case, the officer appeared to be wrong.

Bush administration trying to silence their critics....like they have tried so many times before.

Yep, George Bush might as well have arrested the two himself. Try to get the facts before spewing left wing propaganda.

Police chief blames vague policies for women's ouster from Capitol

WASHINGTON - Faced with a bipartisan furor, the chief of the Capitol Police on Wednesday apologized for ejecting anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan and the wife of an influential Republican congressman from the State of the Union address and blamed vague policies for the actions of his officers. "The officers made a good faith, but mistaken effort to enforce an old unwritten interpretation of the prohibitions about demonstrating in the Capitol. The policy and procedures were too vague," Capitol Police Chief Terrance W. Gainer said. "The failure to adequately prepare the officers is mine."

Ordered mistake.

He knew about it before he started his speech.

How about you change your subtitle of the Sheenan arrest thread away from "Criminals" since she is now NOT a criminal, or are you just going to leave it like the Leadership race (Delay) thread?

Before the state of the union he was involved in Sam Alito's confirmation and oath.

The news broke on CNN shortly after 9 PM, after the speech had began.

So Bush had absolutely no time to tell anyone to get Sheehan out? I guess he's may not be as obsessed with her as you are then!

Not that she did break any rules, but the first Amendment is NOT absolute inside Capitol buildings and on capitol grounds. It hasn't been since 1947.

Speaking of vague

WASHINGTON ? A new provision tucked into the Patriot Act bill now before Congress would allow authorities to haul demonstrators at any "special event of national significance" away to jail on felony charges if they are caught breaching a security perimeter.

"It concerns me greatly," said Bob Barr, former U.S. prosecutor and Republican representative from Georgia. "It clearly raises serious concerns about First Amendment rights."

Well.... you won't have Dick Nixon to kick around after 2008 ... I mean Bush. Gee they are so much alike it is easy to mix them up. But, Bush wouldn't have known or cared bout Sheehan he has a Staff to handle every little thing for him and all sorts of advance people jotting down any little thing and deciding what to have done. Bush, like most Presidents bothers himself with the big issues.. He read Peter Drucker...

Although to be honest, the camera shots of her that would have been periodically flashed up on screen would have been priceless.

She should have just sat quietly - that would have made the best statement.

It is very obvious the the right wanted her out of there for the very same reason. Well they got their way. It's a case of going for the lesser evil. It's easier to fight a 1st amendment battle afterwards than the priceless camera pans during the speech.

Dumb actions on both sides.

I'd leave California if we elect Sheehan.
