Poland okays forcible castration for pedophiles.

WARSAW (Reuters) - Poland on Friday approved a law making chemical castration mandatory for pedophiles in some cases, sparking criticism from human rights groups.

Under the law, sponsored by Poland's center-right government, pedophiles convicted of raping children under the age of 15 years or a close relative would have to undergo chemical therapy on their release from prison.

"The purpose of this action is to improve the mental health of the convict, to lower his libido and thereby to reduce the risk of another crime being committed by the same person," the government said in a statement.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk said late last year he wanted obligatory castration for pedophiles, whom he branded 'degenerates'. Tusk said he did not believe "one can use the term 'human' for such individuals, such creatures."

"Therefore I don't think protection of human rights should refer to these kind of events," Tusk also said.

His remarks drew criticism from human rights groups but he never retracted them.

"Introducing any mandatory treatment raises doubts as such a requirement is never reasonable and life can always produce cases that lawmakers could never have even dreamt of," said Piotr Kladoczny from the Helsinki Foundation of Human Rights.

"If somebody is of sound mind, we punish him. If he is sick, we try to cure him -- that's how it works in Polish law. This bill introduces both approaches. As far as I know, this makes our law the strictest in Europe on this issue," Kladoczny said.

The bill, which also increases prison sentences for rape and incest, must still be approved by the upper chamber of parliament. This is seen as a formality as Tusk's Civic Platform party holds a majority of its 100 seats.

Chemical castration is perfectly acceptable until medical science can find the gene or mutation or whatever that makes people wanna rape.

My mom told me where she grew up in the mountains of NC they never had much of a problem with rape or sex offenders. The men in the town would drag the guy into the woods and when he came back he never touched anyone again. She never told me the details, but either they beat the crap out of him or did something more elaborate.

If people aren't ready to be released after their sentence, make the sentence longer; integrate more mental health treatment into their sentence if need be. Stop trying to continue punishing people after they served their time.

It has been shown that a released pedophile never really stops wanting to molest. It comes down to their willpower. The only solution I see is life in prison. They just can't be trusted. Some even offend while using the drugs.

I was told that in these kinds of cases the sick fvck exerts his or her need to dominate in other violent ways. I'm not sure I buy that, or care, and I'm sure that has a lot to do with me about to be a father soon. I've known too many cops and social workers and the horror stories they both relay. The depravity and downright evilness of some offenders will chill your bones. And as NeoV has already pointed out, these child molesters have it pretty easy in this country, comparatively. Any perp who falls into this category of evil and has more than two brain cells to rub together can realize he shouldn't be bitching about pills when in other places it would be an immediate bullet or curbsandwich entering his mouth instead.

We should take any step (especially one so easy and painless) to stamp out kids getting raped, it's that simple I feel.

We?re dealing with a conflict of interests here.

We have people unfit to be in society.

The historical punishment for that is death, which we?re against, or life in jail, which we?re apparently also against. So we?re removing the penal system from the equation entirely. We?re setting these people back out onto the streets.

Back on the street, we still have to deal with them. We have to protect ourselves from them. Yet are not all men created equal, are not all men supposed to be treated equal? Yet here we are creating a subclass of free people. What other subclasses do we create and enforce? What other inequalities?

Apparently not all free men are to be treated equal anymore. How are we to tell the normal man from the different subclasses? No longer can we see an abuse of human rights and proclaim our sacred duty to right those wrongs. Perhaps that abuse we witness is rightly taken against a subclass, we?d better check with the authorities first. We?d better let someone else decide for us what is right and wrong.

It's interesting that Poland is expressing outrage over Roman Polanski's recent arrest for the same crime.

I suppose it follows the typical European formula... American children being raped by Europeans is ok since they're not considered humans.

This is a serious and disturbing issue for me. I wonder is there has ever been anybody with this problem who has found a way our of it via psychotherapy or any other kind of self understanding.

What bothers me about it is that I am not sure it's an illness that can be cured so I don't know if any effort should be put in that direction.

And it would be very tragic if such folk truly are not exactly human that they would do such harm to children to satisfy themselves and perhaps compulsively with no hope of stopping.

It is a difficult problem because it means that the way we address it, if in fact these folk can't be made normal, then society will have to face doing to them things that are rather uncomfortable.

Jail will have to be permanent, or some other options like the one being talked about here.

I do not know what the disease really is so I don't know the answer to how to handle it.
