Had to sew a button back onto something. Why is it, when there are gadgets for just about everything, there's no simple gadget that will just instantly reattach a button to a bit of clothing?

Really, I'd settle for something that automatically threaded the needle - I wonder how much time has been wasted, in total, over the centuries, with people (especially middle-aged blokes with less-than-great eyesight) struggling for half-an-hour at a time to get a bit of cotton to go through the eye of a needle? (just to then spend 2 minutes actually sewing the button on)? It would be easier for a rich man to get in to heaven. Or for a camel to get into heaven. Or a rich man to get into a camel. Or a rich camel to sew a button on while reinterpreting a biblical aphorism to make himself feel better.

It's not exactly "automatic" but these can be helpful. I think perhaps the juice isn't worth the squeeze for inventing a re-buttoning gadget (accommodating different button sizes/hole placement/thickness, fabric thickness), but yeah, would be neat for those occasions.

I think my wife bought one. Since I haven't had to rush her to hospital, I am guessing it is collecting dust.

Pro tip:
Dental floss makes great button thread. Of course I'm talking about the old fiber style that actually works for cleaning teeth, and not the slip tape that provides PFAS and aggravation.

Anyone remember Till Tequila?

She was one of the early faces of social media and reality shows around 20 years ago. I remember thinking "she should do porn".

Well - She DID do porn. Am I the last person on the face of the earth to become privy to this information?

God, I'm slow.

Ok, I have an ethical question that doesn't deserve it's own thread. I bought a winch drum from ebay, and the guy sent the wrong size. I sent three messages over 4-5 days, then contacted ebay. After the one week waiting period, he didn't talk to ebay either, so I'm now getting a refund.

Question:
What do I do with the drum I was sent? Do I send it back to him on my dime using the return address on the box, or do I just keep it?

Variables:
Is the return address correct?
Should I be responsible for paying shipping due to their fuckup?
Is the guy even alive?!

The drum's of minimal use to me. Once I get the correct size, I'll have a backup of this size, cause it came on the winch. It's an expendable part, but I don't see me using the smaller size enough to wear it out. The speed of pulling with the larger drum will have me using that way more often.

I would keep it; either for a spare, or sell it on ebay if you ever do that sort of thing.

Yep, you've fulfilled your responsibility, you're willing to send it back, and would typically not be on the hook for the return shipping as the item was not what you ordered.

One seller here sold his expensive server CPU on ebay and clearly mentioned in the listing that it was an engineering sample. It was worth over $1000. The buyer opened a dispute saying he thought it was a retail sample. ebay sided with him and told the buyer to keep the CPU. The seller was SOL.

Thanks all. I'll keep it in the box it was sent in, and if he gets back to me in some kind of reasonable time frame with a prepaid shipping label, I'll send it back. It'll only take a little tape and time to ship it, and it isn't something I need to use now.

I ordered another drum from a bigger name(American Forestry) on ebay. I expect to get the right thing from them. Cost $20 more :shrugs:

I don't think Tron Legacy was that bad. I didn't love it the first time I saw it but I bought the BR and my affection for it has grown.

Yes, there are incredibly cheesy scenes but the overall story arc was ok and the visuals are incredible. Jeff Bridges basically playing the dude is endearing somehow.

Oh no, the case is locked! How will I steal the corporate data?!

You could put the whole case in your bag, and open it with a pocketknife when you get home...

Crazy talk!

Seeing one of those on the teachers desk, we knew it had to be very important, maybe the answers to the test were in there!

I weirdly kinda miss floppies, they had such a satisfying clunk when you insert or remove them and at the time it felt cool being able to take data with you, as this is before high speed internet or flash drives so it was typically the only way you did it. Now we just take that for granted.

Crazy how far things have come, now multiple TB would take up less physical space than a floppy disk.

I dreaded floppy disks because you never knew when one would fail. Their quality was so hit and miss. Some would seemingly last forever. Others would work fine a few dozen times and suddenly you would hear the sound of the floppy disk reading lingering a bit longer than usual and then it went into a loop trying to read over and over until it gave the error message to Abort, retry or fail. HATED THAT!
