Plextor's new DVD burner PX-716A

ill wait for a black SATA version. if they got a 12X black SATA dvd burner, the 16X is only a matter of time

Nice deal... especially considering Best Buy had the price at $180 for the past 2 weeks.

However, I think I will wait for some of the other stores to get a few in so that I can order one with my DiamondMax 10 HDs... computer upgrade time, baby.

Just picked up the 3 they had on shelf at my local bestbuy.

have to use 80 conductor cable or drive wont write at 16X

Personally I'll stick with my NEC. I bought a PX-708A back when it was $230 and the features and firmwares, or rather lack of features and firmware, sucked. Maybe I'm just left with a bad taste in my mouth that Plextor denied it's customers a firmware or even a solid answer to the ability to burn 8x dvd-r.

Top notch name isn't always equal to top notch quality and support.

Only software I know of that will allow multiple burning on same pc is DiskJuggler, but I deffinitely wouldn't use this with any kind of DVD burner, OK for CDRW tho...

Don't discount the PX-712 - It's an awesome drive - it's also the only one that will overburn anything. The Pioneer and NEC can't overburn even 1k over.

good point

well the DL media is not available cheaply though. So what will u do with DL drives ? I bought a cheapo IO Magic and flashed to DL and HD enabled but no use....

Am I missing something - the only thing that makes this better than the NEC ND3500A or the other 16x drives, is the 8Mb cache, and that's not worth $120 AR, compared with the $83 with no rebates NEC.

This is not SATA (is it even ATA66?), doesn't do DVD-RAM, or 8x DL, so what's the big deal?

Personally I'm going for the NEC and the 2C8SE firmware 😉

Edit: I think you just need Nero Enterprise to use multiple burners.

Although I'm sort of a plextor fan, I would wait with 716 purchase. There are tons of 716 scans at www.cdfreaks.com forums and they DO NOT LOOK GOOD. So far it appears that plextor has some quality control issues.

why do you need 3?

to burn 3 discs at once! 😉

what software allows that?

Nero 6.0 allows you to burn on up to 4 devices simultaneously. I just finished building a "media" computer for my church with 4 CD burners and it works great! It's just a bit difficult to push that much data over the PCI bus (I had to use the southbridge controller (@200MHz) to accomplish the task). With DVDs, this might be even more of an issue. Shouldn't be a problem once PCI express is more widely adopted though.

No firmware fix?
Noooooooooooooo!!!!
Agggggggck.!!

Note to self - DONT BE THE FIRST.

Tray opening action is kinda sloppy too.

Edit: Good thing I didnt throw away boxes yet.
