The 16x Plextor is on BackOrder at the BestBuy web site... And there does seem to be a QC problem with the first batch. They should bring their manufacturing back to Japan! Wait for later production units.
. The Plextor $30. rebate has been extended for purchases thru the end of Nov.!

Apparently it was the first 1000 - all sent to US. I just updated firmware to 1.01, some improvement, but does not write 16X or 12X at speed or reliably with many media - lots of errors. Gonna order some TY's at Rima.com, try them.

I am not a happy camper.

Shoulda went with Pioneer, or NEC

You should go to their web site and check the Knowledge Base/FAQ and see if they have come up with something for that. If there really is a defect not solvable via a Firmware update, I'm sure they will replace them.

The link above given by htne already quotes someone at plextor saying 16X writes/reads cant be fixed by firmware.
The guys in the CDRLabs/cdfeaks forums have screenies of poor error graphs, write kickdowns.
CDRW doesnt function - but that I dont use it anyway.
Who wants to go thru the nonsense of replacement shipping?
