Please stop with the forced diversity in superheroes!

I can't take how everyone is changing gender, race, sexual orientation, etc. All these reimaginings and rewriting of history is just pandering to the audience. Creating a brand new superhero who is Chinese Muslim transgender is fine. But saying that Wolverine is now a Hasidic gay woman is just the laziest thing they can do and appear PC.

Nick Fury is black.

Thor is a woman.

Colossus is gay.

Spiderman is a black/Hispanic.

The Hulk is Asian.

Now Iron Man is a young black woman:

Soon we may have a gay Captain America sleeping with Bucky:

I do not even care anymore, super hero movies should be going the way of reality shows these days.

The whole concept was over saturated long ago.

They can do all they want with the comic books..but they always buckle when it comes to the movies, sorta.

Mr. Sulu of the new Star Trek will be a gay character. The actor who played the original one in the 1960's (who is gay in real life) is not happy about that.

I just ignore modern comics, their witless pandering isn't going to ruin my childhood any more than the Conan and Rollerball remakes did. If you don't read or watch them then they have no power over you :)

Yea, I was surprised that George Takei took that stance, but it made sense. The character he played was not gay, and making the new Sulu gay, of all characters, is obviously about Takei. He didn't like that they were messing with the story and characters that way. He doesn't want his sexuality to be relevant like that. It's his own personal business.

Wow. With a the OP being so racially sensitive I hope he doesn't checkout the cast of the Broadway show Hamilton. Would probably give him the vapors. ;)

with blonde hair.

and Christian.

LOL

Superheroes often don't look like the general native population.

Makes you think, doesn't it?

If anyone wants to respond with "but what about Mary?", here's my response:

Mary was touched by God, might have turned her white.

The real problem is that the writers of these POC superheroes are themselves all white men. This is basically them massaging their guilt.

Iron Man should be Asian, but in the white male comic book writer mind, Asian males are still despised.

Nah, just "not diverse enough" -- young Asian female lets you check off more boxes including promoting STEM to women. Make her young Asian mixed-race female transgender with an abusive childhood and you can shout "bingo!"

Batman Beyond did a good job of introducing a new generation of Batman mentored by Bruce Wayne. This Iron "Man" idea does not seem as well thought out.

Massaging their guilt? Most of these "big name" comic book characters were invented in the 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s. They were politically correct in their time, and many of the creators haven't lived to see their concepts become "racist" so there is no guilt to massage.

Now are modern directors and producers trying to "diversify" characters from the mid-20th century to make it more appealing for the mass audience? Sure. And personally I approve of that, as making the stories relevant for a modern audience is how they live on.

But the originally concepts (racist or not) are kinda baked into the crust of our culture- the Black Panther comic character is older than the more famous Black Panther Party for example.

Interestingly, Superman in Lois and Clark was a half Asian male. But, DC is releasing a Chinese Superman series.

Anyhoo, they're not massaging guilt so much as trying to reach more potential paying customers. For example, lots of movies have locations in China or major characters from China these days, I assume because they want to tap that Chinese market. Lots of $$$$ there. Or Yuan as it were.

Obviously we're talking about contemporary comic book writers. I've found that certain sorts of white males take on this white knight thing regarding social justice issues. They get very emo and guilty about it.
