7-8 inch tablets are much easier to use one handed, especially for prolonged reading or browsing or what have you. They also have much less bezel than 10" tablets, and this in turn makes the devices look and feel sleeker.

The N7 could have the worst color reproduction and the screen would be still better than Tab 2 7.0 screen. Low res is way worse than any color issue. I have the original Tab 7.0 with 1024x600 screen and Nexus 7. The original Tab 7.0 screen is PLS which is Samsung version of the IPS tech. Samsung claims their PLS is better than IPS but whatever. Both are good tech. But viewing web sites on 1024x600 is no where good as 1280x800. No color reproduction issue is worth the resolution tradeoff. Just like I would never go back to 800x480 phone, I would never buy 1024x600 7" tablet now.

But the low res isn't that low res. We're talking 1024x600 vs 1280x720. Not that much different. It's like the same PPI reduction when we went from 3.7" to 4.3" phones. And it's not like people complain 4.3" phones are ugly at 800x480.

Now that we have 1280x720 phones, its 3x the # of pixels as 800x480. Of course there's a difference, but that's not the same difference we're talking about for the Tab 2 versus Nexus 7.

For many, color reproduction IS important. There's enough threads about LCD versus AMOLED, people want those oversaturated colors. This is despite SLCD churning out EXCELLENT screens (Have you guys seen the One X screen?). I think it makes a huge difference, and has played to the success of Samsung phones.

The Nexus 7 isn't THAT bad of a screen I agree, but the Nexus 4 is absolutely horrendous. If you check out the threads where people calibrate their screens, it's a night and day difference.

Anyway, my point was that the Galaxy Tab 2 is a pretty decent alternative for many at that price point. For me it lacks in many aspects though:
- Not AOSP
- Laggy as hell
- Mediocre res

Speak for yourself.

Ok not everyone, but come on.... you can see it on this thread. I've already lost track of the # of posts that say "I'm never going back after buying a Nexus" or something along those lines. You can also see how much excitement there is for the Nexus phones compared to other phones. Maybe the SGS3 came close. Anyway, my point was more people in the enthusiast community care more about getting a Nexus than the other phones.

 indeed. Nowhere did I mention books, and I treat my tablet same as a book, when I take my tablet somewhere that I might have previously taken a book.

...

You did mention reading and as most dedicated ereaders are under 7 inches and most paperbacks are under 7 inches, it seems that a 7 inch tablet would be fine for reading on.

For most people, but as I mentioned, I can fit more, bigger text on a 10" device than I can on a 7" device.

You're looking at spec and not speaking from user experience. It doesn't look like much but with 1280x800, you can see pretty much the entire web page without having to scroll around the screen across and down. With 1024x600, you have to constantly scroll and reformat the web page. It's obvious you have not used 1024x600 tablet. We would've heard the complaint long ago if you had. Go use a 1024x600 7" tablet and read some websites. It will be very clear why people strongly prefer 1280x800 7".

Most websites are created on a 960px width grid system, so there isn't side scrolling more on a 1024 screen vs 1280. There is more vertical scrolling on a 1024 though.

Text is also sharper so you can just read it without zooming in and reformating the text.

but the Nexus 4 is absolutely horrendous
This has to be the most ridiculous thing you've ever said about the N4. The first 2 reviews I found, first is here from AT second is Engadget. I don't think I've ever heard anyone say the screen is anything other than top of the line.

LG Display unsurprisingly knows how to make LCD displays, and the Nexus 4 display looks subjectively very good. At 320 PPI I can’t see any pixels, and don’t think we need to get into the whole visual acuity discussion again, it’s very good on the Nexus 4.

This panel is one of the best you can get right now, and is on par with the 720p displays we've played with on the One X and Samsung Galaxy S III

Honest question, who here actually takes photos out and about with their tablet? Especially when you more than likely have a smartphone?
My duaghter is taking ice skating lessons and her coach frequently pulls out her tablet to record the students. She'll have the student perform a skill, then replay it for the student so they can see what they're doing wrong. The tablet screen is big enough to capture and see the details while a smartphone screen is too small.

Not a common use admittedly, but it has its purposes.

That's a definite niche use though, it makes sense having a large screen there.
