It'll be interesting to see how a name brand cheaper tablet sells. I think they'll end up proving my point that people mostly want 7" tabs cause they are cheap, not because they are 7"

You mean rear camera?

Honest question, who here actually takes photos out and about with their tablet? Especially when you more than likely have a smartphone? I'm not excusing the missing rear camera from the Nexus, I can definitely see uses for it at home, but I'm just wondering if anyone here actually uses one as a camera out and about? I remember seeing this kid holding up their giant iPad as they were walking through the museum. It looked ridiculous and tiring.

Would be nice for Ingress, but yeah I don't see myself using it much. However, the most useful camera is the one you have on you. If I'm chatting on my tablet, I'll grab a pic on that. Why waste my time pull out my cell phone and switch to that? And of course it'd be useful for Google Hangouts/video conferencing.

I'd like for Google to address some of the missing features of the Nexus 7 (vibrating motor, rear camera, screen quality). If that means selling a $250 tablet, I'd have no problem. They can keep selling the current gen Nexus 7 for a discount. However, I can see Google still selling at $199 missing features left and right and the crowd here throwing excuses out.

If Google is worried about Samsung's dominance, then it needs to step up the Nexus line of products. Especially after the Nexus 7 and 4, I think there's certainly potential for the Nexus to go after the other Android flagship products.

When someone other than Google makes better product at the same or similar price points, we'll worship them too. So far no one has stepped up to the plate. Even the haters are using their Nexus products. What does that tell you?

If I were to shop for myself today, Nexus 7 and Note 7.0 are a very very close call.

But as I have said for myself earlier, I would love to see a iPad mini-like Android tablet. (my preference is still 7" for portability, though)

You mean upcoming Note 8.0? Because there is no Note 7.0. I would chose the Note 8.0 over the current Nexus 7 too but Note 8.0 isn't out yet. Its expected release is in May. And it might be double the price of the Nexus 7. We don't know yet. In May/June we should see the next gen Nexus 7 from Google. So the fair comparison will be Note 8.0 vs Nexus 7.0 Version 2. That is if Note 8 can compete with the Nexus 7 price.

My bad. I meant Tab 2 7.0. Geez. Samsung's got too many products with similar names.

1024x600? Ewww...

well if that's your only concern, yeah... ew...

But I'm sure that if you cared about screen, you wouldn't be too happy with the Nexus 7's low quality screen. It may be higher res, but it's got terrible colors.

The Galaxy Tab 2 is a solid competitor. It's got the front and rear facing cameras, haptic feedback, etc. at the $199 pricepoint.

The problem is we all want Nexus experience, and so the only person to make that would be Google. So really it's up to Google to beef up the next Nexus 7. For many individuals, it doesn't matter that there is a Galaxy Tab 2 or other great tablets by Acer at 7"--just the vanilla Google experience.

The Nexus 7's color rendition is acceptable to me. I haven't used the GTab 2 7.0 but even if it's screen was the great thing since sliced bread, it wouldn't be worth the tradeoff of such a low resolution. Especially for things like browsing information-dense website like the NYTimes.

I mentioned before I actually prefer Touchwiz over stock android. So if Galaxy Tab 2 was really good, I would have no problem using it over the Nexus 7. I would prefer it. The problem is Galaxy Tab 2 isn't all that good. The screen is low res and not that great and the tablet is slow and laggy. The tablet has about 4.5 gb of free space. My cousin bought Tab 2 as portable video player and game machine for his 2 year old son and it's fine for him. I helped him set it up since he's Android novice and recent convert from iOS. Tab 2 is an average tablet. The only saving feature is the mSD card slot which is the sole reason my cousin bought Tab 2 instead of the Nexus 7.

So no. No one has come close to matching Nexus 7. I have used Tab 2. Have you?

The N7 could have the worst color reproduction and the screen would be still better than Tab 2 7.0 screen. Low res is way worse than any color issue. I have the original Tab 7.0 with 1024x600 screen and Nexus 7. The original Tab 7.0 screen is PLS which is Samsung version of the IPS tech. Samsung claims their PLS is better than IPS but whatever. Both are good tech. But viewing web sites on 1024x600 is no where good as 1280x800. No color reproduction issue is worth the resolution tradeoff. Just like I would never go back to 800x480 phone, I would never buy 1024x600 7" tablet now.

I think that's why so many people go to Apple still, they don't have to understand specs or a myriad of other differences between a crapton of tablet models, then further compare them to other maker's individual models. They grab an ipad and know what they're getting and that the apps will perform as expected, the battery life...etc will be comparable or better than others, even if every spec is not the best nor has the greatest features, but since the familiarity, reviews from friends..etc will fall into the typical comfort zone.

So even if one of the many other models of tablets out there was better in every way for the same price, they either won't ever know it or the familiarity of what they know/hear or experience..etc of Apple will fall into their comfort zone.
I notice this among other types of products too, some people just have to have a certain brand even if they know nothing about that type of product, work boot brands comes to mind, i know some guys are stuck on RedWings due to their smaller, yet quality selection.

Same reason people pay $$$ every month to Verizon, AT&T, et al, I suppose. (including myself until very recently)

Not sure whether that's a positive or a minus for the society as a whole, but I get what you're saying.

I used to feel that way too until I got a Nexus 7. But I hear ya, not very many good 10 inch tablets either for that matter.

A 7" tablet is pretty much useless. It's too big to slip in a pocket and be portable, and it's too small to do any real browsing or reading on.

For the record, I had a 7" crap tablet (Huawei S7) and upgraded to a Transformer TF101. I also have a Note II.

The problem is we all want Nexus experience

Eh? The 7in tablet is ideal for reading books on.

As someone who owned both the Tab 2 7" and the Nexus 7, I can say without hesitation or doubt that the N7 is the better tablet in all respects save one, storage. The N7 has the better screen, speakers, weight, performance, UI, holding comfort, etc. I ended up selling my Tab 2 7" in less than a month.

Actually the Nexus 7 is easy to carry in a pocket and its perfect holding in one hand while reading, gaming, or watching a movie. And compared to even a large phone its much better for browsing.

If it had the screen, speakers, and hdmi out of the Kindle Fire HD it would be near perfect.

1.) Galaxy Tab 2 used to be $249(at least it was when I purchased the Nexus 7 in October)...Samsung must have recently dropped the price.
2.) Such a low resolution sucks on a 7-8" tablet. It's also why the iPad Mini sucks. That resolution may be acceptable on a 10" tablet. On a 7-8" tablet, it's not because you'll spend more time zooming in and out of everything.
3.) Nexus 7 sells 1-2 million units per month. I seriously doubt that a high number of people are buying it for the "Nexus" experience.

They may not call it that..they more likely would call it the Google experience.

Just like people who buy Kindles probably know its tied to Amazon.

And people who buy Apple products are most definitley looking for the Apple experience.

You must have big pockets. While I can carry the thing in my pocket if necessary, it's certainly not comfortable nor could I sit down like that.

I suppose I should have (though I shouldn't have to) prefaced my previous post with "IMO", as the below is.

Eh? The 7in tablet is ideal for reading books on.

The N7 has the better screen, speakers, weight, performance, UI, holding comfort, etc. I ended up selling my Tab 2 7" in less than a month.

Weight is about the only thing a 7" tablet might have over a 10". The screen is too small, I can fit more, larger text on a 10" screen, as I have bad eyes.

N7 wouldn't fit in the pockets of any of my pants except my cargo shorts - I don't wear skinny jeans, either. A larger, high-resolution screen is more desirable for gaming and movies, and for my eyes, e-books and browsing. See above.

By your definition then most books are useless and not portable

 indeed. Nowhere did I mention books, and I treat my tablet same as a book, when I take my tablet somewhere that I might have previously taken a book.

My ideal tablet would be light-weight, 10" 1080p IPS or SAMOLED screen, quad-core SoC, 32gb internal storage, uSD slot, HDMI out, GPS and a keyboard/battery dock running Samsung's Android software (Nature UX). An S-Pen would be nice, but it's not a deal breaker.

Actually, if I could find a 7" tablet with GPS, 32gb, a decent SoC and a really nice even if low-res screen for $100-150, I'd buy it. I need a tablet that can fit in a double-din opening.
