I am 21 years old, about 6 ft tall and 140 pounds. I used to be 155 before I moved for college. The stress of college has caused me to lose a ton of weight. It is also in partly due to not having a lot of home cooked meals from my parents, and I'm way too damn busy to cook all the time.

I found some french artisan bread from wal mart which is great, 1200 calories in one loaf. I have been eating one of those for lunch every day loaded with honey ham and provolone. This gives me about 1600 calories in one sitting.

So far I feel great just eating one of these a day, but would like more calories. I have a fast metabolism so I really need to pack them on to gain some weight.

Any recommendations of high calories healthy or unhealthy foods? I will take anything I can get at this point!

EDIT: I should've mentioned this is only my lunch meal, and also the bulk of where my calories come from.

Think more in terms of make up. You need protein. Your sugar laden bread (just carbs) gives you zero protein. You also need fats because they make you less hungry and take a while to digest.

If you want to add muscle and not fat, you need to weight lift, heavy compound lifts - "Starting Strength".

Healthy - lean steaks and veggies. Whole grain bread. Eggs. Whole milk.

Unhealthy: fast food meals such as macdonalds burgers and pizzas.

You need "aids" as well - vitamins, microelements, oils. Eating just bread and cheese is poisoning yourself - body cant really use the nutrients without vitamins. And I bet you have some trouble in restroom with just bread.

Eat yogurt for good bacteria in digestive tract as well.

Peanuts 🙂 Healthy and calorie intensive.

Bacon wrapped steaks Protein and Fat

Potatoes with sour cream

Just make sure you lift hard and you shouldn't gain too much fat.

MegaVovaN had some awesome advice too  (no beer, empty calories)

Bolthouse Farms makes some tasty protein shakes. Drink them at breakfast and take a multivitamin at the same time. They do tend to make you a bit gassy sometimes though. Also, they are soy-based which makes some men feel a little weird (soy estrogens). You could try various whey protein powders. Eating some fatty foods during the day will probably help as well. Put some mayo on the sandwiches you are eating. Drink some hot cocoa made with whole milk with a dollop of butter in it before bed (this is common for people while winter camping, but you seem like you could do this any time). Macaroni and cheese is a tasty, high-calorie food....though that requires prep as I am not talking about the kind out of a box. Add a tablespoon or so of olive oil to your meals where possible. You can also just eat a dozen donuts a day.... *shudder*

I'm curious, are you hungry a lot and don't have time/energy to make large meals? I'm not sure I could put down 1600 calories at once, even in the height of marathon training....though it's possible I have.

Good luck!

I am not hungry a whole ton, but I think that's because I am spending time stressing/being busy. I get to a point where I don't eat breakfast, and then it's easy to skip lunch and have a late lunch and then have dinner. So I have gone almost a year or two now in college without eating breakfast except for maybe a select few days out of the weekend where I make big breakfasts or have a bowl of cereal.. Trying to change my habits and be healthier. Eating all the calories has really helped improve my energy throughout the day.

I do use mayo in the sandwiches. I was thinking about trying some protein-type shakes.

I am also excited because I couldn't figure out why I got sick to my stomach with diahrea most of the time I ate dinner the past few years.. It just turns out I was stupid and didn't rule red-meat out, but I found these awesome pills at hi-health called digest gold. They are definitely life-changing pills. Now I can eat ground hamburger or steak and not get sick to my stomach! I am just lacking some enzymes.

To MegaVovan: I also eat steaks, chicken, or pork for dinners. I eat yogurt on a fairly-regular basis. My girlfriend gives me fruit all the time because she's a big fruit-eater. She's trying to get me to eat more fruits and veggies but I have also been a carnivore, I love me a good steak, chicken, or pork meal 😀

I've also been trying blueberry bagels with a nice thick layer of cream cheese in the morning.

Peanut butter on toast. Peanut butter on a bagel. Peanut butter on celery. Peanut butter on a spoon.

My favorite in college was ramen with an egg dropped in it.

Botlhouse Farms "Perfectly Protein Vanilla Chai Tea with Soy Protein" is absolutely delicious. I have no problem with gassiness from that. I wish I had enough money to drink it everyday (I did make my own counterfeit out of cheap soymilk and other ingredients, but it wasn't quite as good).

I don't know why any man should feel weird eating soy. Phytoestrogens don't have any (or a very, very minimal) effect on men. It's not like eating too much soy will give you breasts or turn you into a woman. Soy is good for pretty much everyone.

It's peanut butter jelly time! It's peanut butter jelly time!

Eggs, peanut butter (or any nuts), whole milk, whole grain bread are all great choices.

The Bolthouse Farms protein drinks are good, but kind of expensive especially for a college student. You could try meal replacement shakes/bars that usually provide a good amount of calories and some well balanced nutrition for cheap (~$2.00 per serving depending on the brand)

Also, you are wreaking havoc on your metabolism (and energy levels) only eating once or twice a day. You can get a way with that when you're young, but it will catch up with you and weight gain will be inevitable. Eat SOMETHING for breakfast and try to get some snacks throughout the day.
