Does Air Tahiti code share with the U.S. Carrier you purchased a ticket with? meaning you buy one ticket for a complete flight although it is on different carriers. If so, Air Tahiti will be aware of any U.S. carrier delays.
You can also call Air Tahiti and see what thier standby policy is. I know carriers like Southwest will start giving out unused seats 10 minutes prior to a flight. If Air Tahiti starts giving out seats 1 hour prior (I doubt it) you could be in trouble.
You need to call LAX and speak with the local Air Tahiti people there. If you call the general 800 corporate line for the airline they probably won't give a crap and will tell you whatever is in the corporate handbook. Air Tahiti probably relies on other airlines feeding them with passengers so I am sure they can be accomodating. Look at the schedules and call LAX at a time when there aren't any Air tahiti departures close by.

Then follow this good advice. Usually, if you can contact the right person at a big monolith corporation, they will bend over backwards to help you. The work is in getting past all the anonymous customer "service."

Well the update is that I am about to fire off an e-mail to the senior VP of customer operations.
I've gotten in touch with my credit union who said that I can call at any time to dispute the charges but they recommended I use that as a last resort.
And basically I'm going to wait now and see if this senior VP responds to the e-mail, if not I'm going to the president of expedia.
Hopefully I'll have a better update tomorrow when I get off work.

MAJOR UPDATE 4/8
Well I sent the e-mail off yesterday and expedia called me back a few hours later! A lady named Julie helped me, said she would call me back today, she gave me her phone and e-mail address, which she asked not to share and I wont. And she did call me back today. She first apologized over and over again. Then she explained EVERYTHING to me, what my options were, best case scenario, worst case scenario. And then she actually listened to me. Amazing.
She said she'd get working on it ASAP to ensure my honeymoon happened. She called me back 20 minutes later, saying she was halfway there on resolving the issue and would call me back in an hour or two. Well about an hour later she called back. Everything is fixed, I was moved to an earlier Northwest flight so now I have 5 hours of connection time. I was reissued ticket numbers and she again apologized over and over and over again. I thanked her multiple times for saving my honeymoon.
And the best part of it all, it didn't cost me one penny, she did it all for free.
But I would also like to thank ATOT for your help and advice and without your help I might not have found the right e-mail address. So thanks and have a :beer: on me.

She actually told me that while they don't advertise the fact that they have higher level customer service reps, she said that most people don't care enough and will just pay the extra money. She said that when people e-mail these bigwigs/higher level support that as long as your e-mail is well written, isn't angry/mean/nasty then you honestly have a decent shot of getting your problem resolved.
Good job. Im a little late on this thread, but yes Air Tahiti Nui IS VERY STRICT on their one hour policy. Went to tahiti/moore/borabora on our honeymoon a few years ago on Air TN... we were there in plenty of time, but they *almost* denied another couple boarding because they got there 45 minutes prior to scheduled takeoff. The flight ended up being delayed 4 hours due to lightning so they eventually got on, but if that flight was going to be on time they were stuck for 3 days. (JFK-Tahiti at the time only flew on Fri and Tues)
That being said, ATN is a great airline asides from living in the paper boarding pass age. The staff is friendly, food decent, on board entertainment great.
Are you going to jsut Bora Bora, or any other islands? Where are you staying? How long? I wish I could go back, we were there for (close to) two blissful weeks in pure paradise!!!

Cool. We added a stop in Moorea, but the best part of our trip was 6 nights in Bora Bora. We stayed at the Bora Bora Nui, but I would imagine any place in BB will be great!!! They treat you like royalty!!
TIP: Make sure you go to the main island grocery store area and stock up on soda/snacks the first day you get to Bora Bora otherwise you will pay $5 a can of soda at the hotel. We didnt make it out there until the 3rd day, because our hotel was on its own islet and we had to take a boat to the main bora bora island. If you have any other questions, feel free to PM
