My mom in law has had aol for 13 years now. she will not switch because it is used for business. she used to be able to sign onto aol and instant messenger with her screen name, but now someone else is using her screen name for IM. We called AOL, and they said they don't support it, and no one does. I tried submitting a bug report from AIM.com, but haven't heard back. I don't know of any way that you can 'steal' a screen name. I thought they were permanent. This seems like a security issue since mail is accessible through the IM module. Does anyone know who I can contact, or what I might be able to do?

Have you run a thorough, nothing-left-out virus scan using the most recent virus definitions? Some viruses/trojans go after usernames & passwords of this sort. Probably time for a few visits to Windows Update too.

Tell her to call up AOL and specifically TELL them that you can not log in. Also TELL them that YOU did research already (basically DOING THEIR JOBS for them), and found out that it looks like someone ELSE has created an AIM account with the same name. But MAKE SURE you let them know that you CAN NOT log in. Do not be afraid to let them know that you are not happy with the quality of their service with reguards to this problem, which you have already reparted in the past. AOL currently is trying VERY hard to keep existing customers. Let them know that you are pissed. Tell them that you will consider switching ISP's if they can not resolve this problem in a resonable time frame and also let them know that you are not going to pay for the time that you are down (even if you are not going to switch ISPs, let them know that you "might", they are really scared of losing existing customers right now). That should light a fire under their butts and get them to fix the issue.
