No, different architecture, one is socket 462, 32bit, FSB and one is socket 754, 64 bit, HTT. Applease and oranges. If you could sell them for that, you could still do this swap. All other parts go together.

With the 9800 pro, it wil make a LOT of difference IN GAMES THAT REQUIRE THAT MUCH POWER. Your 9600XT is fine for strategy of lower res at games like Far Cry and BF1942. The only reason I suggested the CPU swap was if you could return or sell the other parts, there is a fair difference, but you might not even see it. If you are happy with the games you play now, fine. I was just suggesting these parts so if you got hooked on a new game that required more "horsepower" you could play it.

ok i really don't understand why anyone would reccomend the athlon 64 to someone in your position.

for very little money you should do this:

-sell your cpu and video card
-buy a mobile barton 2500+ cpu and a radeon 9800 pro 128mb video card (should be under $300 total, minus whatever you can get for your other stuff)

the athlon 64 is a complete waste of money compared to the mobile barton!! once you have it running at 2500mhz it will blow everything else away, including a G5 mac (maybe even dual), an athlon fx-53 (top-end amd...$1000 processor), an athlon 64 3400+ ($400 or so) and even the mighty P4EE in most tasks...all for under $100. :)

everyone on these boards who keeps reccomending the athlon 64 needs to seriously re-evaluate their position based on these new mobile barton chips. on top of that, with socket 939 just around the corner, buying an a64 makes NO sense whatsoever to me at this time.

I will keep your suggestion in mind. By the way, this is why I have stuck to Mac, either you buy the Mac or not, there is not other option:). Well, I will keep this system and get the mobile barton just for gaming. The system I have right now works very well with Maya, Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign, Flash Mx, and Dreamweaver MX. Infact he handles all files very well. My only concern with this system is if its good enough for gaming.

Ohh by the way, I used to own a dell laptop with the following setup:

P4 2.4ghz
512mb DDR ram
64mb vcard (dont remember which make/model)
dvd/cdrw
15.1xvga screen
60gig hdisk @5400

I used to play Halo and Command & Conquer: Generals day and night without any problem. It is true i ran everything at medium quality. One thing i love about pcs, gaming is phenomenal, especially the hogging up your time strategy games. Now keeping that system in mind, how does my current system compete with it?

Let see some benchmarks Mr. Smarty Pants. You're probably just jealous that my $100 XP Mobile dusts your $500 A64.

yeah i suppose...i've never seen a flame war of AMD-vs-AMD but i guess anything is possible.

no hard feelings here, i just don't like to be accused of bs'ing unless the person has some sort of definitive proof to back themselves up.

heresiarh, the person whose opinion matters is yours. You already said that the computer runs your games just great. If you want my suggestions, pick up a nice Lian-Li USB 2.0 memory-card reader (if you have devices that use memory cards, such as a digital camera or whatever). They're a nice brushed-aluminum finish and they're available in black. :)

For the hard drive... well, I wonder if you'd like some SCSI goodness in your PC  I recently had to set up our HR guy's A7N8X-Deluxe/2200+ home-office computer again, and I copied our Office2000 Pro Administrative Installation Point to its WD 800JB hard drive, then used this local copy of our AIP to install Office2000 Pro on it. Disc 1 installation took a little over 2 minutes with his WD 800JB. My A7N8X-Deluxe system with a Seagate Cheetah 15k.3 did it in about 45 seconds (now I've upgraded to A64, though). Just one more excuse to link to this pic... Command queueing... it's not just for servers :)

Oh, and not that it probably matters much, but the A7N8X-E Deluxe doesn't have dual gigabit Ethernet... one of the NICs is gigabit, the other's 100Mbit. Also, unless they've changed something, it's got five PCI slots, not six :)

I totally agree with you mechBgon, i guess i just want to have the best I can. Well, I'm sticking with the machine I have and in the future, I will just build one. But for now, I think I'm going to sit back and enjoy my newly acquired Gibson Acoustic. nothing better than the sound of a good hollow body guitar!.

I agree, have an old bizarre version of the southern jumbo. Top is veneered to accomodate and damp the vibrations for a pick up.
