Rational discussion? You open your "argument" with some 100% pure flamebait ;)

I think as long as you don't bother anyone else with the smoke, in my books you're free to do whatever the hell you please with your cancer sticks. Other people shouldn't have to smell you.

I agree. I wish they would outlaw smoking at all restaurants. Outlawing smoking at bars is rediculous though...

As long as we are on the issue of smelling:
WTF is wrong with people who don't use deodrant? Don't they realize how they smell? It should be illegal not to use it!
WTF is wrong with people who use too much cheap perfume? It reeks! It doesn't smell good at all! It should be illegal!
WTF is wrong with people who come straight from the gym? They have showers there for a reason. Quit your workout 5min early and take a shower!

Thank you for putting so eloquently what I was going to explain explicitly -- if you don't like a characteristic of a person, don't associate with them, even tell them why you don't -- that is how you change people, not by setting dangerous precedents that have lead to things like those who are calling for bans on junk food -- the government is not supposed to be in charge of the morality of individuals, nor are you for that matter. As long as they aren't harming others (i.e. Child molestation, et cetera) it isn't your job -- and any case that secondhand smoke harms you is very tenuous, unless they come onto your property, light up, and refuse to stop (in which case it is trespassing).

Yeah those are good points BUT...it's also fair to say that when I drink, I don't force people around me to drink what I am drinking also, if you smoke in front of people you are essentially forcing them to have the choice of breathing in your secondary smoke or leaving....and no, I don't think this is a fair choice! :D

It doesn't bother me very much at all if people wanna smoke and slowly kill themselves, in fact I really admire the cigarette companies in how they manage to market a product and sell so much of something that actually poisions on the body, damn marvellous...gotta love addiction.

I do object to the effect that smoking must have on the environment in the big scheme of things and the fact that I have to breathe the stinking smoke in whenever I go out in the evenings at the weekends.

Your first statement is a reasonable argument, but in most open environments, you breathe relatively little smoke in -- in resteraunts, a smoking section is usually enough seperation between you and the smoker that you aren't smoking in any reasonable sense of the word - there is a certain logic to saying that they are 'forcing you' to smoke.

(I am a nonsmoker who used to make this very argument, until I came to the conclusion that massive restrictions on smoking leaves the door open for other, turly ridiculous restrictions)

Your statement about smoking's effect on the environment, however is a bit ludicrous -- I will bet that bonfires made every night in the third world by people who need heat and light have a much larger effect on the environment (and that is clearly, still quite negligible -- effectively nonexistant) than all the smokers in the world.

The worst argument a nonsmoker can say is "But it affects my health too!"
Crap on that.
Stupid people piss me off. Especially ignorant people, which is exactly what I think when I hear that argument.

You begin dying the day you're born. Smoking just speeds that process along in some cases.

Sorry, today feels like Monday to me. I had 2 grandfathers who died from lung cancer caused... or partially caused... by smoking. But I loved them, and it was their choice. And I wouldn't take it from them even if they were alive for me to do so. And I wouldn't whine about it. They enjoyed it.

However, if they decided they were a slave to it and wanted to quit, I would do everything in my power to help them.

Agreed. I wouldn't stop anyone from smoking (except from my immediate family). If they asked me for help, I would help them out in anyway I can. It's just a really really stupid harmful habit which everyone who has half a brain cell knows. And it still shocks me when people still do it.

Nicotine is physically addictive. Most people start smoking earlier than the legal limit under false pretenses. That's why it's worth caring about.

It shouldn't shock you. If you completely understand the reactions in the body and brain since the first puff of nicotine, you'd know exactly why people continue to smoke. If it weren't for the nicotine, there would be no smokers.

True but by shocking, I mean because there are so many methods to quit smoking and yet people still do it. I mean they're making it easier and easier for people to stop.

By the way, the binary figure mentioned isn't even close to 802340827785132993125731246365127647436589437954368256317. All I had to do to figure out the discrepancy was first to note the number of places, and second to check the last digit. Since it's a 0, it's obviously not an odd number, meaning it can't end in 7.

If it weren't for the nicotine, there would be no smokers.

I disagree. Some people smoke because they like smoking. I know some people who have a cigarette maybe 4 or 5 times a year.

Personally, if everyone else is smoking, I find it easier to tolerate the smell if I'm smoking too. So I make them buy me a cigar. Problem solved.

I participated in a lengthy thread about this same thing sometime last year. Basically my side was that they were being inconsiderate and 2 or 3 members felt like they could do whatever the hell they wanted because no law was being broken. Well how are you supposed to argue with a mindset so closed off and selfish in the first place? All I was asking for them to do was to smoke AWAY from exits and entrances of buildings where EVERYONE has to walk through.

Co-worker quit cold turkey because of his child in his wife's womb... did it to "prepare" ... and he said it wasn't even that hard. Makes you think some people don't even do it because of addiction.

don't compare smoking to bo. bo won't physically hurt the guy next to u. emotionally mebe.

eating fatty food will screw u up. but theres no 2nd hand fat. theres no 2nd hand cholesterol. don't make dumb comparisons.

please, rational discussion, no flames.
How dare you be so ignorant on a public forum? I hope you stop posting, if not for yourself then at least for those who read this forum.

Whoever really thinks that ranting and raving in a public forum is gonna make a smoker more conscious about his decision to smoke is really outta his tree. Noone is gonna care, and they are gonna do what makes them happy, they aren't gonna care if your annoyed with the smoking. If your annoyed, do the civil thing, and move your business somewhere else.
