Playstation Update 2.4

CVG has managed to get its grubby hands on the final list of features for the hotly anticipated Firmware 2.4 update, which was yesterday rumored to be due early next week. But that's not the case we've been told...

Update: Since our original story went live, we've received further information regarding the inclusion of trophies in the 2.4 update. As expected full 2D trophy support will be in the XMB update and there will be four types: Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum.

Platinum is only awarded when you have collected all other trophies in a game. Also there are no gamer points, it's all done via a leveling up system. Think Call of Duty 4 leveling up system, we reckon. Update Out

Speaking under strict conditions of anonymity, a source has told CVG that Firmware 2.4 is expected to launch in around three weeks' time. A quick look at the diary reveals that E3 is just under three weeks away. It doesn't take a genius to see that Sony's pre-E3 conference would be the perfect time to launch the Sony XMB assault.

We've also scooped the following list of XMB features that you'll be able to access in-game. Here goes:

* Friend category
* View, send, receive messages
* Manage downloads
* Set the vibration feature of the controller
* Sign in to PlayStation Network
* Register friends
* Manage Bluetooth devices
* Terminate the game
* Music category
* Use the system BGM
* Work the system BGM operation panel
* Settings category
* Assign controllers
* View profiles
* Game category
* Set audio devices
* Use the voice changer

As previously reported the update will also allow you to play back your own tunes in-game from the XMB Music column. It's unclear whether this feature will be compatible with all games or just new titles created with more recent development tools.

The system BGM will offer functions such as Play, Stop, Previous track, Next track, Change repeat mode, Change shuffle mode, Change volume (five levels). When you stop the playback of your tunes, playback of the game music will then begin.

Sony has yet to confirm or deny any of this and won't comment on rumour and speculation. If you ask us though, this is bang on the money. Not long to wait and see...

I'm wondering if theyre going to retroactively extend trophies to previous games? Would be a pretty killer update if they did.

I like the Platinum trophies and level system. I don't care about Gamer Points at all, and all it seems to create are gamer-point whores. And while it may do the same thing in the PSN world, we can now ignore total points, and even ignore levels, and just look at how many platinum trophies someone has. To me, that's the best accomplishment possible, and to be able to show that is sweet. To earn every single accomplishment in a game, and to have multiple games like that... sure you're gonna have the trophy whores, but to beat a game to absolute completion does deserve some respect. Some games that is just insane.

honestly this is great, but sony...its really too late if you ask me, better late than never- but this is ridiculous.

the ps3 has been nothing but delay and waits ever since its launch, we should have seen this coming- if this new feature list doesnt push people to start buying these, i would go out on a limb and say this is sony's last game console, which would be HORRIBLE!!! So, when this feature does come out...be sure to tell all of your NON-ps3 owning friends...

That seems rather pessimistic...

The only cool thing here is playing my own tunes, I really like the idea of that. Everything else looks pretty useless for me personally.

I like to be able to do things without quitting the damn game, so the additions are very welcoming!

Pretty Cool. Looks like you can access a good amount of stuff from the XMB while in game...such as a browser.

That video does answer one of my questions. I was wondering if they'd be able to make it pause the game for you when you open the XMB, but it doesn't look like it. If you have to manually pause GT5P, then I'm sure you'll have to do it with all other games, too, since GT5P is a pretty recent release. Not too big of a deal I don't guess, but it would've been nice.

He says it pauses it for you but he decided to do it manually because he didn't want to hit a wall.

No voice chat is a little meh, and I don't like the trophy system as much as achievements, but that's clearly a good bit of functionality they're putting in. Good for them!

Setting Bluetooth devices in the XMB is going to be quite handy, though!

interesting, because I actually like the trophy system a lot more than the achievement/gamer score system. I like the different levels of trophies in particular, with the platinum basically representing beating a game to 100% possible completion as defined by the developer. But beyond that, I like the rest of this update. Full music control, in-game settings access, and messaging is about all I'll need, as well as the trophies being there for people who are crazy about achievements. Personally I am not, but with them being there I might be more about it. Looking forward to see what current games get support for trophies. A lot of previous games I have yet to beat, might be a good way to get me to go back to them.

It doesn't pause it for you, if you look while he has PJM in the background, the guys keep attacking.

they haven't really confirmed that it's in or out. Here's to hoping that voice chat is in, but who knows. Can't imagine it being difficult, seeing as they offer bluetooth configuration in-game. Unless it's proving difficult due to memory limitations with having the OS and game running at the same time...

edit: I've been digging through the comments at the official blog, and haven't found a single answer to any question posed. Usually they answer the good questions posed on the blog directly underneath the specific comment. Might be too early.
But rumor has it 2.40 will be released on Wed, July 2nd.

yea i just saw in the video that it was grayed out when he went to the friend. i'm hoping that maybe the bluetooth device was not registered or something so maybe it was just grayed out for that reason?

As previously reported the update will also allow you to play back your own tunes in-game from the XMB Music column.

Hope this will eventually make it to the PSP.. I would use it quite a bit on the portable, probibly wont use it at all on the PS3.
