Fanboys can protest, but any system that takes Sony from the #1 spot (by a HUGE margin) to the #3 spot is a flop. The PS2 dominated everything, but Sony's arrogance undid them with the PS3.

Of course they're working on the new Playstation. Just like Nintendo is working on a new Wii and Microsoft is working on a new Xbox. They take years and years of brainstorming and development, I'm sure they've already been working on their new systems for a while.

I agree that Sony got cocky and stupid (and the prime person behind was Kutaragi who apparently has very little knowledge about modern processors for someone behind the system design of their consoles). The PS2 was a lucky situation for Sony.

The PS3 is still not a flop. Only idiots would argue that it was. No, it wasn't a massive success, but it was still successful, which is the opposite of flop.

Andeven tho xbox live is not free its still better than psn. I have both systems and will buy a game for my 360 before i would buy for ps3. The exclusive ps3 games just suck imo. I only have a ps3 like many others for its blue ray. Gaming is not the ps3s forte. But it was billed as a gaming system so in that sense it wasand is a flop.

Its been billed as complete media device since day one, and apparently you've missed all of the Kevin Butler commercials. Even as a gaming system its not a flop. You're about the only person that thinks the PS3 exclusive suck, and they have sales numbers to back that up.

Yeah the PS3 was not going to do as well as the PS2 no matter what Sony did. The competition was simply much stronger this time time around.

I do think it was a good idea to put in a blu ray player as that helped them win the format war. In the early days there were more PS3's sold than all other blu ray players put together.

The Cell processor, however, was a complete flop. It wasn't a good game processor and wasn't much good at anything else either. Hopefully the next gen Cell in the PS4 will have less cores. 8 is too many, since very few games even take advantage of a quad core. Better to have fewer faster cores.

The idea behind the cell processor actually isn't a bad one. In many ways, it is akin to the APUs that we are starting to see now. (Not all cores are general purpose processors.) The problem is that sony made a crappy SDK to work with the processor.

I hope the Playstation 4 will not be released any time soon!!!

There is still plenty of life left in the PS3 - It's just that game devs dont take full advantage of the hardware. Proof of this is all those games that look and play better on the Xbox 360 despite the fact that it's hardware is not better than Playstation. The PS3 is suffering from the same issues Sega Dreamcast did when Sony killed it. Console was way ahead of it's time when it was released, and too few games available. Instead of pouring all that money into making a better and more advanced console they should focus on the sheer volume of games and simplicity of the hardware. People can scream all they want about how progress cant be halted, and better stuff must be rushed as soon as possible. Yeah, tell that to SEGA...

Look, the Xbox 360 is also being hacked just like Sony. Games are being pirated. But you dont see the Xbox having all those financial problems Sony is having. That is because of the insane volume of games, and the fact that it's so much cheaper to manufacture the "older, crappier hardware". Not because of Microsoft's backing.

Besides, judging from the release price of the Playstation 3, hell, even it's current price, it's obvious I will not be able to afford the PS4 when it comes out.

if sony doesnt' release a PS4 within a few months/year of the next xbox they'll essentially handover the next gen to MS and Nintendo.

xbox owners will move on to the new thing, and some PS3 owners will also. less people will buy new games for the PS3, devs will notice this will less sales and will spend less resources making games for the PS3 meaning inferior ports, longer release windows etc. this leads to gamers moving to the new xbox/wii and even less games being sold for the ps3.

sony knows this and will almost certainly have a console out near the time of the next xbox. well, i assume. sony does have a track record of arrogance and may assume it's playstation brand is enough - it isn't anymore.

IMO? if sony doesn't have a console to counter the 3rd xbox, it'll be out of the console business altogether

Of course they'd have the PS4 within a year of the next Xbox but the big thing is that they need to come out with it before the new Xbox but I don't think they will.

Who cares if somebody on the internet calls the PS3 a flop? They are just using exaggerated language to push their point, and half of the threads in this sub-forum are peppered with posters that cannot distinguish between perceived failure and actual failure. We would be equally well off with threads arguing that pancakes are a total failure because they don't have little pockets to collect syrup like waffles do.

PlayStation 4 arriving in 2012?

By Eddie Makuch, GameSpotPosted Jul 6, 2011 7:14 am AEST

Citing "Taiwan-based component makers," new report suggests Sony beginning production of new motion-enabled console this year, in anticipation of purported ship date next year.

Source: Asia information technology site DigiTimes.

What we heard: Last month, SCEA president Jack Tretton said the PlayStation 3 is "just hitting its stride" and that word of next-generation hardware would not be offered "for some time." Now, a report claims the PlayStation 4 is being readied for release as early as next year.

Citing "Taiwan-based component makers," DigiTimes is reporting that production of the PS4 will commence later this year. The report also offers a broad release window for the new system, saying it will release some time in 2012.

The report did not offer what the PS4 will be capable of in terms of a graphical power, but did note that the system will boast "movement-based control like Kinect."

PS4 units are reportedly being assembled by FoxConn and PegaTron Technology, the tech firms that worked on the PS3. According to the report, at least 20 million PS4 units are being readied to ship next year.

If the PS4 does launch in 2012 it will not be the only new system to do so. Nintendo is bringing its new tablet-oriented Wii U to market next year. It follows the Wii, which released in 2006.

Microsoft is also reportedly readying a successor to the Xbox 360 for 2012. The latest rumor says Microsoft's new gaming hardware will make its debut at E3 2012, scheduled for June 5-7, 2012.

The official story: As of press time, Sony had not responded to GameSpot's request for comment or clarification on the matter.

Bogus or not bogus?: Not enough information to tell right now. The five-year console cycle is clearly a thing of the past, but whether or not the PS3 can record the same 10-year staying power of the PlayStation 2 remains to be seen.

Makes sense for a late 2012 release and I see it being backwards compatible with PS3 games.

Yep. It better be backwards compatible with PS3 games or it is a no go for me. The MAIN thing I want to see in the next gen consoles though is the ability to copy my games to the console's HDD (or SSD) or have the ability to download full games (when they are released). I hate getting up and swapping out games. :(

I love the immediate insult about "crying." Pathetic.

The Kinect IS being shoved down our throats, the Move is not. If the PS4 does in fact use motion controls as a proprietary form of control then I simply won't buy a PS4, and my stance I have now will remain the same.

Awesome. More copied crap from Sony and no originality at all.

Motion control - check (Sony move)
Kinect - check (PS4)

Let's see what else they copy. :)
