sweet hype. remember how the original ps2's specs were overhyped? bah.
But still. If they are overhyped, that's still one powerful processor to be the base of a console. I'm guessing if it were overhyped, take 25% off that projected speed. That's still, what, 75 times more powerful than the 2.5GHz?

And about the comment of Microsoft working on the successor to XBOX before the XBOX was even finished, now that you mention it, I beleive I might have that somewhere before. Hopefully with the news coming out of the Sony camp, they'll release some of their projective numbers. If they don't, maybe that means they don't anything close to what Sony is expecting.

100x a 2.5ghz P4?... Next year? I wouldn't get your hopes up.

I'm surprised that nobody has said a thing about the fact that they are using technology licensed from Rambus.

How come this cell technology hasn't made big news before? I haven't seen a single shred of evidence that this cell technology has ever been done before, so it would be incredibly bad for Sony to be the PS3 on untested technology. I doubt this is true. I'd like to know where this information originated. I've seen this rumor in a few places, but I haven't seen Sony verify any of it. If it is true, they have nothing to lose by not commenting. If it isn't true, they are gaining support from all the rumors flying around. It's win win for sony.

its the same bs as when they were hyping the ps2, remember the george lucas comments etc?

we all know how it really is, which isnt bad,but hardly close to some of the mock ups that were shown early on.

Bleh, nothing to get excited about. I remember the hype behind the PS2 "fastest console to hit the streets ever!", it can do X amount of work in X amount of time, the PS2 is crap now power wise.

100x on silicon? No. There have been numerous articles out on AT saying how the performance horizon of silicon is in view, albeit quite a few years down the road. I doubt they could manage 100 times real world performance over such a high speed cpu.

wasn't it last week this cell stuff was going to use "cell" chips in other house hold products to some how magically make the system just like a $200 million dollar SGI supercomputer

(daddy we need more toasters so I can play GTA 12 faster)

In related news, Sony Computer Entertainment has announced they are changing their name to 'Cyberdyne Systems'.

If i'm not mistaken, you'll find a couple of RIMM's inside the current PS2. 🙂

Big whoop! It isn't due out until 2005!!! Lets see what Intel/AMD/everyone else is making then...

Just think what Intel/AMD was making just THREE YEARS ago compared to what we have now... compared to what we will have in three years to come... :Q

Use your noggin, think!

Same with N64's. 🙂

They are hoping to get it out for Xmas 2004, which puts it at under two years. Nonetheless, computing power never increases 100x in just 2-3 years. We've seen results more like 2x in two years.

About the N64 thing, that's interesting. Then is the memory add-on required to play Episode 1 Racer a form of RIMM's as well, I'm 😕

This thing is supposed to be a distributed computing type of processor. The so called Cell will be responsible for the video, music and the cpu functions so I am not surprised if the Xbox's individual processors for these functions outpower the Cell. The Cell is designed by IBM and will be manufactured by Toshiba.

Since I know for a fact that it won't be anywhere near those specs, I'm just hoping that they redesign the analog sticks on the DS2 and make it a little bigger.

What's Moore's Law got to do with anything?

All it states is that the transistor density on integrated circuits doubles every couple of years. It's not even really a "law", per se. More like a trend. 😉

don't you love how nvidia claims they're doing moore's law cubed or something ridiculous like that? :disgust:

and i doubt they're using RIMMs per se... i thought the fact that nintendo and sony have both used RDRAM for its granularity was common knowledge.

That will need liquid nitrogen too..

I won't believe it till I see it.

100x more than 2.5ghz P4. Sounds like a lotta hype and bullsh!t to get people to buy it earlier and preorder. If it was that much better than P4 I think they could charge thousands for it than, and it won't be a gaming machine.

A variant of the Prescott core, perhaps? Maybe 4 - 4.5ghz.

Good question. Will the Cell processor have to deal with rendering as well? If so, 100x the P4 isn't very impressive.
