Playstation 3 Cell processor - 100 times more powerful than a 2.5GHz Pentium 4

Article.

Interesting read about the type of memory they will be looking to use for the successor to the Playstation 2. Also note that it says the Cell processor has the 'ability' to be that powerful.

Cell, which is expected to come out in late 2004 or early 2005, substantially differs from current chips on the market. Developed by IBM, Sony, and Toshiba, the processor will contain multiple chips inside a single piece of silicon and will be geared toward delivering video, entertainment, interactive gaming, and other content. It will have the ability to do north of 1 trillion mathematical calculations per second, roughly 100 times more than a single Pentium 4 chip running at 2.5GHz.
Can't wait to see the next round of console wars heat up.

Chips churning at that speed, though, need to be surrounded by high-speed links and similarly speedy chips to function properly, which is where Yellowstone and Redwood come in. Yellowstone can transfer data up to 100 gigabits per second, or three times faster than current high-speed memory

That is just as amazing to hear also

I have heard of the Cell processor before, and about the power of it, but had never heard that stat throw around before. That completely blows me away, but it is technology. It grows by leaps and bounds every year. I guess this is a good sign of what competition does.

All we need now is some fresh blood as game designers to come up with some new ideas. :disgust:

Not to mention, they need to be surrounded by liquid nitrogen... Sheesh.

Maybe w/ this much theoretical processing power of the next PS, I think the next X Box should go w/ an AMD chip 😛

Does Intel have anything on their roadmap at the end of 2004 beginning of 2005? I haven't been in the tech news so...

I wonder what the actual performance of that will be. It sure seems to have a lot of theoretical power.

i know theres gonna be an X-Box 2 but i have no idea how powefull it wil lbe. dont think they have something 100x more powefull then a 2.54GHz P4 up their slieve tho

if its 10% of that thats still a 25GHz proc. cant really imagin somethin liek 20x more powerfull then my comp at the moment

They and AMD are working on their 64bit chips, so perhaps some variation of these chips?

now if only they can make them straightforward to program so that you don't have to wait 2 years for multiple good games to be released in the same month.

clockspeed != actual performance

It is truly amazing to think of where this is heading.

Remember the Playstation 9 commercial back when the PS2 was new?

I wonder if we will ever get to that point..

I wouldn't think so either. Microsoft seems to handle their hardware needs by contracting well established computer entities as Intel and Nvidia. Sony and company have been working on this Cell processor for atleast a couple of years now, if not more. Just because Microsoft hasn't said anything yet, though, doesn't mean they don't have something up their sleeve.

I would find it hard to beleive Microsoft has the trump card though, as they are looking to get the XBOX 2 out the door before PS3.
