Playing DAI, can't stand the noise on my ref 780ti, are there any 290x quieter?

I foolishly bought a Gigabyte Gaming G1 980 and tried it out for a few days. Loved the much quieter operation when playing demanding games like DAI. I returned it after seeing that I'm probably going to have to eat almost $350 for the upgrade over my reference 780ti after selling it. I haven't noticed the 780ti until playing DAI as I'm usually playing much less demanding games like WoW that don't really tax the 780ti so the reference cooler stays quiet. Seeing that the 290X benches almost as well as the 980 in DAI, are there any cards that are just as quiet as the G1 980 when at load? I thought about water cooling, but I realize the expense and voiding warranty almost makes the 980 a bargain.

This Sapphire Tri-X 290X looks promising

I see you got a redirect in your link. Newegg has it $10 less with a $20 MIR card. You are going to have to ask someone else that has the card though. I'm in the market for a new video card as well.

Vapor-X is the best 290x you can get. Seems to be the reference card your "problem".
The reference 780Ti noise is already low, simply the G1 Gaming is a better cooling solution.

Have you considered cleaning out your case/fans?
Also perhaps purchasing a custom cooler for your gtx 780ti?

Both would be cheaper than going to a r9 290 and would allow you to wait and see what the new generation of cards is (390x and we'll you can let the gtx 980 ti push some prices down as well).

Have you considered buying a good PC case instead? I saw a huge difference in sound once I upgraded to my Silverstone Hawk 2 RV02B-W Case. Most of Silverstone's full size cases have excellent cooling at low noise levels.

I think you are forgetting the Lightning

It is quiet until it hits around 70+ C, then it has the typical high pitch blower noise that's annoying for hours on end. Considering that only DAI is the game that really works my GPU, it's the only time the card gets annoying. I already have a well ventilated HAF full size case so getting cold air in is not the problem. When I had the G1 980, it wasn't that it was much quieter, it's that it was a lo-tone type of noise instead of the high frequency 'white noise' the Nvidia reference cooler makes when cranked up.

It is not the case. He said that custom open cooler gtx980 was quiet - a card that dumps the heat inside the case.

Reference industrial design nvidia god blessed shroud cooler is supposed to exhaust the heat outside the case. Which according to some, makes it the best card for mini-itx lan-box systems.

If it was the case, then the open design would be louder than the blower.

It may be, that the open designs are superior cooling solutions.

Also titan cooler + noise doesn't go in the single sentence.

If it so noisy you can't stand it, it may be something wrong with the cooler, or fan control software. Check temps under load. See if the cooler is tightly screwed. Reseat the cooler, or RMA the card if it has seals on screws.

I got two R290 Tri-X and they're both great. I barely hear any perceptible difference with 2 cards from one and just one is very, very quiet.

What buying a R290 made me do, however, was buying a new PSU and for two reasons. The first is that because it was so quiet, compared to my previous card(a 560 Ti) it made the noise of my PSU that much more obvious.

The second thing is that as it has 4 GB VRAM I'd figured I'd get a second one a year later or so(which is exactly what I did this past december) and to do that I'd need a better PSU in terms of wattage. I got my EVGA G2 850 W PSU and I'm very pleased with it.

If you already have a high-powered PSU that is also running quiet I'd recommend getting two R290s at the same time. The combined performance is far above the 980 for almost the same price and in any rate AMD's drivers are very, very good on Crossfire right now, at least for the 290s.

if it's just the noise in this game you can use a lower framerate cap and play with settings, maybe you could create a custom fan profile allowing the card to run hotter with lower fan speed, combined with a 60FPS cap or something, it could work well.

That is not the case if you observe how Kepler has fared in recent games.

You could also just get a quieter 780Ti. Faster than 290X at any rate.

Since Pneumothorax is primarily playing DAI, 290X is faster than the 780Ti.

This game also support CF and SLI, which means if he sells the 780TI, he can pick up dual 290s that will smoke a 980 and cost less.

1st Sapphire Tri-X 290 = $280 - $20 MIR = $260
2nd Sapphire Tri-X 290 = $280 - $25 off $200 AMEX Twitter deal = $255
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-080-_-Product

He can sell his 780Ti for $350-375 which makes it a remarkably cheap upgrade to get a TON of more performance over his 780Ti or even a 980.

At 1080P, dual after-market 290s = 295X2 are 58% faster than a 980

At 1600P, dual after-market 290s = 295X2 are 76% faster than a 980.

DAI is one of those titles where AMD completes owns NV in price/performance. It's not even close.

Maybe some headphones?

The DD's are quieter than the TriX's.

That's because XFX prioritized noise over high temperatures. You can set up a custom fan profile for Tri-Xs and they'll run cooler and quieter because the heatsink itself is superior to begin with. If one wants to run Tri-Xs at 85-90C at low fan speeds, it's an option. You don't have this flexibility with the DDs.

Pretty silly to buy a GPU on a single game benchmark tho. Even if thats what you iwsh to play primary for now.

The game is like 30 hours long if you rush. Not counting multiple play-throughs or playing casually which would stretch it to 100 hours or more.

Not judging either way since it is a personally decision... but how many hours of gameplay does it take to justify a GPU purchase really?

As for the topic question... I would just replace the cooler on the 780Ti. As much as Kepler is falling behind lately compared to Maxwell and GCN that is still a beast card. Why replace it...?

Get a Kraken bracket and a cheap 120/140mm closed loop liquid cooler.

Going form a 780Ti to a 290x is such a side grade I completely agree. Replacing the cooler is a far better solution.

Well, thought about it and I'm going to try the Kraken G10 cooling mod. Might as well put my spare Corsair AIO to work, warrantee be d@mned lol.

Looking forward to the '390x' release.
Thanks for the replies guys.

Not a bad way to go, if you have not bought it yet, I think Tigerdirect still has the G10 bracket for $9.99 after rebate right now.
