I got one at work. The first comment after "OooooOooO!" is always "this is heavier than it looks". By about 50 people so far.

Well, I feel the same way about most apple products. The first thing I though about the ipod touch was that it was heavier than it looks.

Then I realized that I'm comparing it to something that was made out of cheap shoddy plastic with a crappy thin plastic screen.

Same thing with my laptop. It's 4.5lbs, but I initially thought it was heavier than it looked. You usually get that feeling when something is made out of quality materials and not the cheap shoddy plastic that most other mfgs peddle around.

I saw someone taking a look at the iFixit tear down of the device, where each major component was weighed. The end conclusion was that unless Apple halfed the battery capacity and switched to a plastic enclosure then maybe, just maybe they could get the weight down to a pound. But the LCD and circuitry account for 31% of the weight and the glass covering the screen is another 28% of the weight. So, roughly 60% of the weight is almost completely unchangeable. Switching to plastic instead of glass just wouldn't have the same strength, rigidity or feel.

As for the OP saying that it is too heavy... I played with one at the Apple store for 10 minutes or so, and while I didn't find it oppressively heavy, I can see his point regarding excessive use. Though, I did not have the same problem with typing as he did.

OP, do you have a touchscreen smartphone? How do you fair (sp?) on that soft keyboard? I found that although I could only use like 3 fingers on each hand, it wasn't too crazy slow or inaccurate.

If I had a better laptop, and the extra cash with absolutely nothing else to put it toward, then I would consider one. As for now, it is too limited to replace my existing laptop (namely in the realm of video syncing).

*I am a rather established Apple Fanboy. Really, I think I am a fanboy of good design, but whatever.

I have an IPod Touch. From what understand, the IPad doesn't do anything it can't. No Flash, so no "real" intarweb.

Yeah, the screens smaller but I have a lappy if I want big.

For me the IPad makes no sense, at least in it's current form.

Anyhow, this thread reminds me of The Punisher.

Specifically, the scene where a frag grenade was placed into someone's hand with the arm fully extended. Frag grenades are lighter than the iPad.

Seriously, holding something with outstretched arms, even if it's light in comparison to almost everything, it still adds up if you are constantly using it unsupported. It's easy to carry weight around, holding onto it in such a way to support the weight and that's it.

I haven't held one so I cannot comment on it, but the complaints are realistic imho. And the "weak" comments are comically ridiculous.

Tell me how long y'all can hold a 16oz object, one hand, with a fully outstretched arm, and in general keep it in a position away from your body where you have less support.
Post how long you could continue to keep only one arm supporting the object. I want some laughs. Do it meow!
