Business users probably complained, but business admins and execs make those purchasing decisions. Admins don't want apps for obvious reasons, and media support is mostly from the user base that wants to putz around. Don't get me wrong, there's a damn good business case for both, but it tends to break down for larger organizations who prefer simplicity, lower security risk and lower maintenance costs. Media and app support means more personal use, leading to more replacements, tech support, etc.

What I think is that RIM took its customers saying, "Don't change a thing" literally, when it really meant, "Don't change a thing about the email platform."

Your last paragraph is absolutely correct. The thing is, the enterprise base probably told them that's what they wanted - it's not their job to innovate for RIM. They just want secure email. RIM failed to take the initiative and build around that email platform that their customers like. That will probably be the same reason they will not become a software company, even though that would be a smart move for them.

Ultimately, whether you're right (that the customers spoke up and RIM chose not to listen) or I'm right (RIM took customer feedback to mean more than just keep the core email product strong), they're going in the same direction for pretty much the same reason - failure to innovate outside a fairly excellent email product.

What are your thoughts as an acquisition target for Microsoft?

i think most of the issues are RIM's insane use of BIS. since they spent so much money on it i bet the word from the top that it has to be used and it makes everything hard. unlike apple or google where all you need is a local app or some code to enable functionality

wtf do people need the bis cloud for when all the providers have push email and other services?

well at least HP's doing something smart: they're giving the all homebrew devs a free touchpad!

RIM was doing that with the Playbook too. If you had an app in App World by the launch date, they would send you a free tablet.

They have, but it's been blocked from App World. You CAN sideload it though.

Google aMail for PlayBook.

WOW!
Thats fucking funny. Someone actually makes an email app and they fucking kill it. They're really winning the customers over arent they?

Also, saw your wallpaper on bbzzdd. Pretty sweet. But your favorite apps look like games, is there a reason for that?

From the Playbook logo, swipe up. So you actually put your finger off screen to do it. Couldn't figure it out either, had to be shown. Pretty stupid they don't tell you or make it similar to other OSs.

They do tell you, the first time you start a unit it has instructions and a demo.

Yeah but the above comment was about a guy playing with one at a Best Buy.
And that could really be confusing for most people. They should have a demonstration cardboard stand up thing.

I was trying the 5 finger pinch to close the application(Like iOS 5 does it). Don't know why I thought that would work but it just felt like the right thing to do.

However, instructions and a demo are no substitute for building a product that is naturally intuitive...

Every new input paradigm is foreign until you actually know what to do. Pinch-zoom makes perfect sense when you see it in action, but I bet if you put the majority of people in front of an iPhone in 2007 when they didn't know what pinch zooming was, they wouldn't have just figured it out. Same goes for this - it is perfectly intuitive in use, you just have to understand it first. I agree with shortylicken's comment that the store demos should have some sort of a instruction placard. Or maybe some more advertising on RIMs part that shows the gestures in action.

No, it's on the Games folder, not favourites, that's why! :D

It's got a bloody X on the app. It's pretty obvious... See my pic in the post above.

I'm just saying, it seems to be a point of confusion for many people...

Couldn't figure it out either, had to be shown.

couldn't figure out how to exit app so I left it.

for the life of me, I couldn't figure out how to exit the app!?.

Two things mitigate this;

- The start up tutorial makes you use the gestures and explains them as you set up the Tablet
- The Help system explains it in full, too, and that's an icon available in the 'All' folder

It's not hard to learn or use, but I guess if it's not the lack of email, the financials of the company or the brand of clothing you wear it might as well be this that people get bent out of shape about. :\
