Plasma TV's are dying

MSNBC- Plasma TV's Fading From Popularity

I've been preaching this for years. LCD's are used in everything-every electronic gadget out there has an LCD on it these days. That means they're going to get REALLY GOOD at LCD manufacturing. Plasma is a one trick pony- it's only used in TV's. It's also a lot more fragile and a lot heavier than any other TV technology.

Any wonder why they're dying out?

I like DLP TVs still... but no one really makes them anymore 🙁. They received most of their bad press from the bulbs and people complaining about "terrible viewing angles." In my opinion, the viewing angles was a bit overblown and the bulbs have been replaced with LED arrays. They're also lighter and cheaper at larger sizes.

I have a DLP. i love it. the viewing angle is fine. sure i have to replace the bulb every 6k hours. even at $120 a bulb replacing it 10 time i still come out ahead of buying a 65inch lcd.

Yes but have you seen a good plasma (Pioneer Kuro) against a good LCD (Sony Bravia)? I'd pick the Kuro. With that said LCDs aren't bad at all. They're especially good. I think what's propelled the LCDs is all those Vizios, Spectres, and whatever crap brands there are.

DLPs? Those are seriously dying because they can't keep up with the competition.

My biggest grip with any projection tech is the overscan issues when trying to use a Media Center PC.

i hear ya, i have a mistubishi "diamond series" 65". love the quality, but havent had it long enough to replace any bulbs. also, when i bought it mitsubishi had just lowered their retail msrp to 99 for the bulbs. good news all around. i havent actually priced them, because even at 120 its not that big a deal to me.

this tv replaced my 42" plasma 720P i had for years. i loved the plasma over lcd for the quality, but the thing was a cheaper make and didnt withstand the test of time. and kids.

Plasmas run pretty hot as well.

Not my new 50" Panasonic Plasma. It runs just as hot as my LCD did.

My old Dell Plasma is a friggin furnace.

That is what happens when you put 6 million neon signs in a small area 🙂

I can't believe that the average person replaces their TV every 4 years like that article says. I've had the same TV for 6 years now and I don't see any need to replace it.

i could have gotten just the lamp for $75. but i got the lamp and caseing wich uped it to $120. either way its still cheaper then buying a 65inch lcd at the time. even buying 10 lamps its still cheaper.

i suspect in the next 5 years i will replace the tv with something bette.r then i will put this one in the basement living room for the kids to watch or whatever.
