Yup they need a battery to recharge the plamsa gases. Also if you get screen burn-in you have to lay it flat and shake it around like an Etch-a-Sketch.

Id go with DLP's(digital light projector).. I have been told that a plasma tv has a lifespan of 6-10 years before they burn out within "normal" use

The misconceptions and poor advice given here are simply amazing.

Go to a local high-end store and talk to someone that knows what they're talking about, it'll be worth it.

Don't they only have a 3 yr life span?

That depends. The latest plasmas have a 60,000 hour halflife. The halflife is the time it takes for a plasma to reach half brightness, at which point it will still be much MUCH MUCH brighter than your typical tube CRT television set.

If you had absolutely no life and watched TV 15 hours a day, 7 days a week, every week of the year, year after year, it would still take nearly 11 years to reach half brightness.

To bring a good 60k hour plasma to half brightness in 3 years, you would need to to watch 54.79 hours PER DAY. That, my friend, is truly impressive TV watching. 🙂

Another common misconception is electricity usage. Everyone seems to think Plasmas use way more electricity than the the glorified LCD panels available. The current generation is much much better than it was before. Pioneer's 50" plasma very bright (1000 cd/m2 brightness) uses 363w. Samsung's smaller 46" LT-P468W LCD at 1/2 the brightness (500 cd/m2) uses 350w.

Apex, do you work for Pioneer or something? Obviously, there are many disadvantages to plasma, as there are disadvantages to other technologies . .

EDIT: Apex, when you say 363W and 350W, are you saying that the Pioneer is at 1000cd/m2 and that the Samsung is at 500cd/m2? Or are they at the same brightness?

Plus, the Samsung has to "light up" 1.09million more pixels

(Pioneer is 1280x768 capable of 720p, while the Samsung is 1920x1080, capable of 1080.)

Nope, but their specs were readily available. Panasonics are very energy efficient too. NEC should follow suit soon as well.

I merely like to clear up misconceptions when people compare display technologies.

I still think, though, that the best way to compare HDTVs is to actually go to the showrooms. The only problem is that most manufacturers turn up the brightness to ASTRONOMICAL LEVELS, so that people look at theirs first.

A couple of years ago, I saw a guy bring a DVD of a fast-paced movie. Smart move. He chose one TV over another, even though the other had a higher contrast ratio and brightness level on paper . . .

plasmas are sweet if you're going to go HDTV and heavy DVD usage....if you're going to watch regular cable, sat tv then don't spend the $$$...

but if you want the bling and have the cash and will watch HDTV.....go ahead and go plasma...

what about LCD? why isn't that receiving any attention?

Sharp has a 45", Samsung has a 46", and is planning a 54" and 57" to appear soon . . . .
