I suspect many of us have already noticed it, but this thread is a reminder of just how sad modern American conservatism has become. Not just that it exists in an increasingly fact-free zone, but that diehards like Wierdninja really don't know how to do anything besides repeat the talking points they were fed by Trump and his sympathetic media. Backing things up with credible evidence? What's that?

For that matter, the OP is a reminder of just how disconcerting the Trump camp has become. It's not just that people like Texashiker have convinced themselves a second Trump term is inevitable, it's that they genuinely want to see one-party rule, genuinely want the end of democracy. For all the moaning about supposed groupthink by the left, it's really the modern American right that strives for absolute control and monoculture.

I still want conservatism to persist. All countries, not just the US, need a diversity of political beliefs to refine government and keep it in check. But I want to see actual conservatism that adapts with the times and values more than power. Not the authoritarianism and bigotry of Trump, the passive-aggressive theocracy of Pence, or the obstructionism of McConnell.

I read dozens of periodicals a day. No need to list them. I don’t read trash like Politico.
Those are trash. No wonder you believe what you do.

How can conservatism exist when they have to convince their base that moderate dems like Biden are Communist and Radical Socialists? Any ideology should be based on wanting an informed populace, not by desiring a completely delusional one.

Needs to rebuild itself and accept that will be painful but satisfying once complete.

A girl I dated earlier this year in new York City moved back to Austin after 10 years here, due to Covid, and she is certainly voting blue all the way down the ballot this year.
Austin is pretty liberal...definitely not the same as other parts of Texas.

People like you don’t like it when others have their own opinions. Typical leftist nonsense. My opinion is valid. Like anyone else’s.
I'm sure you've heard this before. Everyone's entitled to an opinion, but not their own facts. Where do you generally read political articles?

Frankly, American conservatism needs a reckoning — a fundamental reevaluation of what it believes and how it behaves. I can imagine that a thorough defeat on November 3rd (that is, the GOP loses the presidency and the Senate) would help, but I'm not counting on it.

Realistically, it may involve a years-long process that might not really kick in until there's another major setback (say, a major loss in 2024). Sadly, you can't even count on a fix once the old guard leaves, since there are relatively young Trump drones like Gaetz and Nunes.

This is an example of how well Trump, the very definition of hollywood coastal elite, has been able to con backwoods rednecks into supporting him.

538 is now giving Biden 84/16 odds.

It's still funny to see the right-wing community cling to the "but the polls were off in 2016!" claim as if it were a life raft, even with evidence like this. It's not Clinton all over again — there's a strong desire to oust Trump that transcends party line votes.

Weird ninjas. Slow spiders. Sp33dy... Things?
I am so fucking glad speedy hasn’t posted much.
I supposed he got tired of the presidents well done steak served with ketchup or the backup cold McDonalds meal.
Was so funny how he used to aspire to eating great food at some Trump party, then it turned out the President ate like a 13 year old boy.

Conservatives are going through that process now. They've effectively broken off from the GOP and are now the never trumpers or the Lincoln project types. There are a couple on this board who are currently going through this transformation as well (jaskalas being the most notable).

The Republican party is dead and what's left of it is the deplorable core that was masked by layers of more tolerable levels of their core beliefs (you know, when dog whistles were used instead of blatant outright racism).

I agree with you that the Republican party is dead !! But what it will morph into could be much, much worse....

Unlikely. History says the crazy party will slowly fade away while a more reasonable party will emerge. Thinking about it logically; if what gets created is worse then why wouldn't you simply push the existing party into that direction? It would be much easier than creating a new third party. The answer is that people aren't looking for a crazier party they want something new and reasonable.

I'm not so sure. This is like a volcano. There's a lot of shit happening under the surface and we just see puffs here and there to remind us this thing can still kill us. That's the trajectory of the Republican party. Nixon normalized the criminal president. Regan smooth talked his way through the dismantling of the middle class. When Clinton was elected Newt Gingrich really jumpstarted the fuckery that is the GOP as we know it today. It went to a much more personal and shit slinging style of villainizing political rivals. Fox News hit it's stride and started indoctrinating fearful and susceptible minds. Bush Jr. and his shit show of a war was enough to fuel Obama to a win. But that just caused the Teaparty movement to flare up like an unmedicated hemorrhoid. And that's where the radical hard shift went and continues. It took the villainizing tactics of earlier in the '90s and pushed it beyond into a cultural war. Fox continued to stoke the flames and rile up the base. Continued to whip their viewers into a frenzy and corrode their brains. And then 2015 gave them the golden goose in the way of Trump that now talked like them and spoke to the carnal wants they had. Those fears and hatred seeded over the last 15 years are now weaponized in candidate Trump.

If Trump is gone, the base remains. Fox news remains. The anger, the fear, the hatred remains. And it will continue to keep bubbling up.

I actually thing we are going to see an even more radical shift after Trump is gone. They tasted the sweet sweet hatred and vitriol he offered them. They want more.

Like I said, the core of deplorables remains, Fox News included, but not only is the party as whole shrinking but it’s losing its intellectuals. Without them you just have a bunch of people screaming running around bumping into things. Trump is the bubble bursting and what’s left are a bunch of crazy people covered in puss. That will attract no one.

Mark my words and you can Lindsey graham them, trump will lose in a landslide not seen since Reagan and the Republican Party will continue to shrink until slowly fading away while a new Conservative party emerges. If I had to guess (this part don’t hold me to), I would guess the new party would consist of Lincoln project conservatives and moderate democrats. They’ll be more pro capitalism than the left, for small government (but not as extreme as republicans or liberals), and more like bush sr on foreign policy (pro patriot act, pro cia foreign intervention).

And really the results were within the standard deviation of the polls. Which is why she won the popular vote if it wasn't for Comey and a last week BS email smear which wasn't even related to her email those closely contested States esp the ones where only thousands made a difference probably would have held
