Sounds like a good suggestion to me...

AT's only. Can't row your own gears.

One other suggestion is a VW Passat. The 2.0T w/ a manaual is a pretty fun car. Can get decent options on it for under 25k. I know it's a VW, but the Passats are at the top of the crop as far as VW products go.

Insurance is dirt cheap on them too.

Really? $25k for a Legacy GT?? Also, no tax in NH...all I get is the destination I believe...

I'll have to hit some local dealers....

Yep. '06's invoice for around $27.4k and there are $2750 in incentives bringing them under 25k.

I'm looking at mid-sized sedans with moderately powerful V6's that will have enough power to not make me miserable coming from a modified V8 Mustang. I'm also looking for a car that won't kill me on insurance, so anything that will fall into the sports car category like another V8 mustang or GTO, etc is out.

I like RWD, but for my new car, FWD or AWD is what I'm mainly looking at since it will make driving in these New England winters more bearable. Now, the car I REALLY want is a Legacy GT, but at $30k-ish, it's too much for me. I'd say $20-$25k is probably my high limit. My three choices I'm looking at now are the Mazda 6 S (Grand Touring), Pontiac G6 GTP (Sedan, not coupe), or possibly even a Solstice, although that would probably fall into that risk insurance category.

So, I know everyone here at AT has their opinions....let's hear 'em!

:)

no, not mazda6. it's built in the usa. relaiabitly is questionable.

mazda3 ftw :) it's imported from Japan

Yes, you can get them for that price. I bought my 05 LGT Limited just when they first came out so my deal wasn't that good.

I LOVE this car.

Legacy GT is a good compromise. It has a detuned STI engine, plenty of goodies for it, and a boxer engine that has that V8 burble.

I'd recommend an Evo since you like tweaking, but it's probably too harcore for everyday driving. Fun as heck though. For ~$500, you can probably get it up to 400hp.

Looks like Cobb is redesigning their access ports. Price is up to about $700 and the gains aren't as big as I remember. No info on the stage 2 any more either. That's the primary aftermarket "must have" for the LGT.

Subaru WRX. AWD, 2.5l turbo engine puts out about 220hp stock. Fun little 4 door sedan and there are tons of aftermarket go fast parts for it.

$90 for the cable + Ecuflash for free.

Plus the rest of the basic mods - boost controller, intake, TBE with resonators. He can have a 400hp sleeper for not very much money.

Sounds like he wants a more midsize car than a compact. The backseat on the WRX is virtually non-existant. The 6, G6, and Legacy all have little more room in every direction over the WRX.

Well, the dealer just got back to me and they are really trying to sell me on this Mazdaspeed 6, which does look like an awesome car, and apparently it's built in Japan, but I'm thinking even though it's a 4 cylinder, the 270HP will put it into the risky insurance bracket....

Yeah, I'm not worried about modifying anything on the new car, whatever I get. I still have my Mustang for that...parts are cheaper and easier to install. Also, you don't need to fool the computer when mods are made...gotta love the OBD-I.

:)

Edit:

The EVO is not even an option...not interested in it at all.

Exactly...I have ZERO interest in these little teenage street race machines like the WRX STI and the Evo... I'm also trying to get something that won't kill me in insurance since no matter what I get I'm going to get hit...

No offense to those who like them...

I don't know on the MS6, but I *can* tell you that the insurance on my more pedestrian Mazda 3 hatch (non-speed version) was VERY high for all the more that the car cost and and the power that it produced.

My wife's highlander was almost 50% more expensive (MSRP) than the Mazda 3, but the insurance on the 3 was more than double the Highlander.

If you don't opt for the spoiler the WRX is pretty modest. Both the WRX and the LGT have hood scoops which is the most attention getting part of the WRX. Outside of that it's not really an obnoxious "little street machine". It's just not quite as smoothed over as the LGT.

Really? This is what it would look like for me with completely loaded ($250k/$500k) insurance:

Evo - $1,272.90
Mazda3 - $1,044.90
Highlander - $1,151.90
New GTI - $1,076.90

Yep. My 3 hatch was $450 every 6 months for full coverage. My wife's highlander was only $240 every six months. My '00 passat V6 was only $200. My current '05 Frontier 4x4 is about $400.

congratulations on a poor financial descision.

Depends on what he buys. If he get's an '06 MS6, he's getting about $7,000 off sticker and a brand new warranty. If he buys used he maybe saves $1,000-$2,000 since current used prices are only going for that amount. People will hang on to them before they sell because new ones are going for so cheap. Over 10 years time that works out to about $10-$20 a month for the added piece of mind that you were the only person to beat on the car.

If he goes with a LGT, he'll spend about $3000 more over used.

If he was looking at a domestic that dropped 50% in value I'd agree. But with a performance oriented car with a turbo, I'd gladly pay the small premium to ensure that I was the only person to have my hands on it.

Im a fan of the G6 sedan. Great looking car..

I dont like the coupe nearly as much but the Sedan has great clean lines. My friend had an 06 as a rental for a few months (he works at a rental agency) and it was a good car.
