Apparently some dude who identifies himself as a woman walks into the woman's bathroom at a local Planet Fitness. A woman inside said bathroom goes postal. Her reaction to the dude is apparently a violation of PF's rules so her membership is revoked:

http://www.cnn.com/2015/03/07/living/feat-planet-fitness-transgender-member/index.html

"A Michigan woman lost her Planet Fitness membership over the "inappropriate" manner in which she complained about a transgender woman in the locker room, a gym spokeswoman said.

Yvette Cormier's membership was not canceled for simply raising the issue, "as we welcome all feedback from our members," said McCall Gosselin, director of public relations at Planet Fitness Corporate.

Rather, it was the manner in which she expressed her concerns that club management felt was inappropriate, resulting in the cancellation, Gosselin said.

Cormier stands by her actions in a case that has drawn attention to transgender rights.

"This is all new to me. I didn't go out to specifically bash a transgender person that day. I was taken aback by the situation," Cormier told CNN. "This is about me and how I felt unsafe. I should feel safe in there."

The mother of two says she was acting out of concern for her safety and the privacy of other female gym members when she raised the issue on Saturday, February 28.

She went to the front desk after someone who looked like a "man" entered the women's locker room while she was changing.

"I wanted to know why there was a man in the women's locker room," she told CNN. "He looked like a man, and that's what stopped me in my tracks."

She said the front desk employee told her about Planet Fitness' "no-judgment" policy, which allows people to use changing room based on "their sincere, self-reported gender identity."

Unsatisfied, she said she called Planet Fitness' corporate headquarters and heard the same thing.

"That should be something they pointed out when I signed up," she said.

"If you have male parts you don't need to be in the women's locker room. I don't care what you are; I don't care if you're gay lesbian, transgender or transvestite. I am uncomfortable with you as a male in my locker room, in my restroom."

She returned to the gym Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday "to get the word out" to other women that they "let men in the women's locker room," she said.

"Every day I said 'just so you know, there's a man they allow in this locker room and they don't tell you that when you sign up,' " she said.

The next day, she found out that her membership had been canceled.

Cormier said Planet Fitness needs to do a better job of informing members of its policy allowing members to use whichever locker room corresponds with their gender identity, which refers to a person's psychological identification as a man, woman or another gender.

"The manner in which this member expressed her concerns about the policy exhibited behavior that management at the Midland club deemed inappropriate and disruptive to other members, which is a violation of the membership agreement and as a result her membership was canceled," Gosselin said in a statement on behalf of Planet Fitness.

"Planet Fitness is committed to creating a nonintimidating, welcoming environment for our members. Our gender identity nondiscrimination policy states that members and guests may use all gym facilities based on their sincere self-reported gender identity."

LGBT advocates applauded the Planet Fitness policy, saying it was necessary to ensuring the safety and privacy of transgender individuals.

Planet Fitness has the right to allow members to use whichever lock room corresponds with their gender identity, Alison Gill, senior legislative council for the Human Rights Campaign, told MLive

Even though gender identity is not a protected class under Michigan anti-discrimination laws, transgender individuals still have the right to use whichever bathroom they feel comfortable using, attorney Jay Kaplan with the ACLU of Michigan's LGBT Project told MLive.

"A transgender woman would be much more at risk for her safety if she had to use the men's bathroom," he said.

Cormier does not see it that way. But she agrees with LGBT advocates on one potential solution: unisex, single-stall bathrooms."

I think it might be time to cancel my PF membership ...

Yea, the way she claimed she complained and the way she actually did are two different things.

The fact that she felt it was her duty to return in the following days to warn other women lets me know that her whole "I wasn't bashing transgenders" claim is bullshit.

I am totally fine with people having reservations about transgenders using women's bathrooms...cool, I get it..it makes you uncomfortable.....but going out and trying to rile up other people in the gym? That's bitchy.

She returned to the gym Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday "to get the word out" to other women that they "let men in the women's locker room," she said.

"Every day I said 'just so you know, there's a man they allow in this locker room and they don't tell you that when you sign up,' " she said.

If you didn't like the rules, you should have just go somewhere else. I don't get why she is surprised that they canceled her membership. It wasn't the fact that she was opposed to their inclusion policy...it was her disruptive behavior in protest to the policy.

But yea, you go ahead and cancel your membership too, I'm sure its really going to hurt PF

Youre worried that a woman might come into the mens changing room or that a woman might shout at you next time you go into the ladies?

Meh...if you have a penis, you should NOT use the women's bathroom or changing room. Even though you might "identify" with being female, you're still male.

I don't 'get' transgenders. How do you know 'I feel like a man/woman even though I was born a woman/man?' Uh, you've only ever been one gender. You have no empirical evidence for what it 'feels like' to be the other. I see it more as 'I'm gay and very, very confused.'

...but whatever. People can do whatever the fuck they want until it actually impacts someone else. It can be argued that this DOES impact others, but that's only assuming our strange historic standard of infinite modesty between genders and zero modesty among the same.

I can personally say that I wouldn't have any special concern over a gay guy meatgazing in the men's locker room. Are there people that think that if a homosexual sees their privates, they've basically been raped or something?

I hope of bunch of pervs (not actually transgender) see this as an opportunity to scam PF and hang out in the women's locker room. Nah, that would never happen. :)

Not your locker room, lady. It's Planet Fitness'. Don't like it, GTFO.

Also she sounds like an awful person to be around.

PF should mark the rooms as unisex, since they are not going to check the the actual gender of anyone, and are essentially opening them up to everyone, regardless of plumbing type.

Since you often can't tell, and certainly can't ask, you wouldn't be sure if a person is supposed to be there or not.

If the rooms are marked unisex, then you'd know what to expect.

That could be the easiest way to cancel a gym membership, usually they make it impossible. Chick could be onto something.

Yup, that would have been the most sensible thing to ask them to do rather than coming back to the gym day after day to let everyone know that a transgender is allowed to use the same bathroom as you.

gender identity vs title ix

if someone who identifies as female joins the football team, does that count to meeting their quota?

Who's locker room? Who's restroom? Hey lady, here's a clue, free, on the house: Membership does not mean you own the place.

We're gonna start needing tranny restrooms in this country.
Not because people deserve them. Just to cut down on lawsuits.

IMHO if a "wo"man wants to use the female locker room, they should have their genitals removed first. Surgery first, then we can consider allowing them to use it. If not, then what is to stop a pervert from claiming transgender to see naked women.

And how exactly do you plan on enforcing that?

What's to stop a pervert? How about the common sense of the management. Locker room access is granted based on the client's "sincere, self-reported gender identity." That doesn't mean anyone guy can just claim transgender and go in.

You'd have to convince the management that you were sincere, which is their ticket to tell creeps NO and still accommodate transgenders who aren't going to cause a problem.

Rules and laws need to be applied with common sense, which is what it sounds like Planet Fitness is doing.

Also, the article describes her as a "transgendered woman," which leads me to believe she's already had the surgery and no longer has a penis. Either way, what the woman is saying with her complaint is basically that men and transgendered people are somehow a safety risk to others. Way to be sexist, lady. Anyone born female is safe to shower with, but if you were born a man you are dangerous.

If it dangles, you're a dude. I don't care if you "identify" as female. Until you're post-op, you're still a male and thus should use facilities identified for men.

Once you're post-op, then by all means, use the women's facilities.
