Pizza place delivered wrong pizza...

ask for your tip back! You should only tip if they went out of their way to provide an extra special service rather than just tipping willy-nilly. I hate tipping. A lot of people in other jobs (teachers, etc) put in so many extra hours and are far more dedicated to go that extra mile but they never get tipped. Then some guy who carries your bag practicly demands a tip: proper BS.

I've heard it's far worse in the US as well, here in the UK we're not afraid of not tipping...

speaking as a grunt for Pizza the Hut,
i work inside, i answer phones, and i cut your pizzas, and I do prep.
the people cutting the pizzas are the ones responsible for putting things together on the other side of the oven, and when things get busy accidents happen orders get mixed up, Friday nights are Hell

99% of the time, the wrong pizza was made altogether, and nobody noticed. BUT its also the drivers responsibility to check the ticket, to make sure that there getting what the customer orders, in theory, if the place is running optimally, and everyone's doing there job, looking at the pizzas, checking the orders with the tickets, and at the door, checking with the customer if they got the wrong pizza.

i know that the driver would have loved your second tip, specially since the price of gas ain't what it used to be, and yeah. it all comes down to how generous your feeling, remember there prolly still workin for minimum wage (which thanks to GOVT, is going up all the time 😉)

I'm a delivery driver, and imo it's rarely the drivers fault when orders are switched. At the place I work, the kitchen is responsible for tagging the pizzas / sides and making sure the order #s match with the order, and throwing in extra sauce, dressing, etc. We have to trust that the kitchen did their job ... we hardly ever have time to double check the pizzas. If there's ever a mixup, we always bring a fresh pizza and let the customer keep the old one ... and I personally never expect a tip, but of course it's nice when they throw me a couple bucks for driving back out. On the other hand I'd rather they not tip me again if it were my fault. The worst is bringing a 2nd free order to someone cause another driver or take-out screwed up, and getting no tip 🙁

You see - at my store, it's the driver's responsibility. I personally check all of my orders to make sure they're right. Here's my take on it:

If the order was taken wrong from the start, and the pizza you got was what the ticket says, give the second driver a buck or so, sicne it's not his fault, but the order takers fault (reguardless if it's the same driver or not)

If the pizza is wrong, and the ticket is right - you should not tip if it's the same driver who delivered the first pizza, should he deliver the second. If it's another driver, a buck or two is cool, since he is bringing you something that was not his mistake.

I'd like to not tip in this situation, but I don't see how the driver who's gonna bring you the 2nd one's gonna not feel like he got ripped. This is not a problem in and of itself, but it might become a problem if you order another pizza later, and he just happens to be the one to deliver it.

On a related topic I once got the wrong pizza at a friends house and they wanted the old one back. So I was sure to have my friends cat walk around on it and tried to make it lay on it before we put it outside.

I always check the tickets, on the pizza and the side orders to make sure they match with the orders I'm taking, but on a busy friday or saturday night we never have time to open each box and check the ingredients. Most of our pizzas are deep dish pan pizzas, and its a PITA to figure out what's on each one (the ingredients are under the cheese/sauce) ... The kitchen crew is really good at this, they have a labeling system to tell the pizzas apart.

I wouldn't tip the guy $3.12 again, but if you have a dollar in your pocket, or if it's a different delivery guy, I'd probably give them that much.

So, no matter whose fault it was, you think you should have to tip twice to get what you wanted in the first place, through no fault of your own?

No, don't tip, don't pay a delivery fee, nothing. It's their mistake, they can correct it with minimal effort from you.

Think about it this way... if YOUR job pays you $10/hour... do you think you should have to work 15 minutes for the sake of the pizza place's mess up?

Who's fault ? Driver giving the wrong one from his batch or pizza place making the wrong one ?

Either way I wouldn't re-tip unless you get to keep the other pizza... just throw him $2 since it's your lucky day. I can't believe you tipped $3+ for a $10 pizza though. I tip $2 for $15.

I always order from the same place, and I try to give a good tip - drivers don't make that much money, and they are more than appreciative. If I send an extra dollar everytime, and I get friendlier service as a result, it's worth it to me - all it really costs is a coffee.

Not to say you 'should' tip more than standard, but there's nothing wrong with doing so.

Regardless of who's fault it is, it's hardly fair for the customer to tip twice if he didn't receive the right order the first time. The customer already has to wait even longer for the right order to get to his door.

Agreed, it's nice when someone throws me a few bucks, considering gas prices these days, but I dont expect it.

Think of it this way, often I'll drive all the way back out to a customers house, putting milage on my car and using gas that I'm not getting reimbursed for, plus most likely am skipping over other orders that I would have been tipped on to deliver a FREE pizza because the customer wanted easy olives, or the pizza was too deep (yes someone complained about this), or they wanted it cut in 6 slices not 8, or the take-out kid gave them the wrong pizza.. More often then not its a phone or take-out employee mistake.. We're talking $20+ deep dish pizzas, and we never ask for the wrong pizza back. The customer gets 2 pizzas for the price of one,and sometimes a coupon for a free pie next time..

.. and even then I dont expect a tip, though it's nice when the customer knows when it's not your fault and gives you a buck or two for the trouble.

Well, the first pizza they delivered came in 20 minutes after I ordered so I thought it was well deserved... besides, I never tip 15%, usually around 20% unless the service was slow 🙂
