Full Story

"A pizza deliveryman won't face charges for fatally shooting a would-be robber several times when he was approached in a high-crime area, but his employer, Pizza Hut, has fired him for violating a company policy against carrying firearms."

WTH??!!! The corporate suits expect you to not defend yourself and possibly get shot/killed??!!

He agreed to follow company policy when hired. He chose not to.

Sorry, he deserves to be fired.

It's a calculated risk, I'd say getting fired beats getting mugged.

If I choose to carry at work I accept the risk that I may be fired if I'm discovered. In fact, if I understand Oregon law correctly I could lose my CHL.

Then again, if I were to need it & didn't have it...

Ditto. The guy knew the rules when he signed up, and he broke them. They aren't saying you can't defend yourself, they're just saying they don't want employees to carry firearms.

That's retarded. The guy was supposed to give up his life because PH says so? What a crock. Last time I'm ordering from them if that's how much they value their employees.

Did PH actually tell the guy that firearms were against policy? Who says he even knew? Most jobs have a big form to sign and they say this is just general policy stuff...

By signing that form you agree to everything stated. If you choose not to read it, that is your own damn fault.

Additionally, the guy may have been allowed to carry other means of protection, but I don't know the full Pizza Hut policy.

Doesn't matter if he knew or not, he should've read the damn thing before signing it.
I don't know if that's the case or not though, just responding to your post.

I'm sure he won't have problems finding another job. Does anybody really think this "breach of company policy" is really going to hurt him in the long run?

What company can afford to have its lowest level representatives driving armed to the teeth (unless they are driving an armored car or transporting valuables...)?

If you don't read it you're an idiot, & still responsible for the contents.

Believe me, I'm all for guns @ work, but virtually employers specifically exclude weapons. If you choose to ignore that more power to you, but don't bitch when you get caught.

Their policy is stupid. Anyone who is going to use a gun in an improper way is going to carry regardless of what the policy states. However, this guy obviously had a weapon that he intended to use only in self defense.

The issue is not if the policy is stupid or not. If you don't like the policy, you are free to seek employment elsewhere.

LOL, I just read the article:

Jerome Brown-Dancler approached Honeycutt at around 11 p.m....Brown-Dancler pointed a 9 mm handgun at the Pizza Hut employee...

Brown-Dancler's gun carried a loaded 14-round clip but had no bullet in the chamber...

And later in the article:

...'I just wanted pizza.'

Darwin award?

if I were him I would be pretty glad that the worst which happened to me was termination from employment, instead of the possbily execution that could have come of the hand of the criminal.

Hell, he could've approached me with nothing but bare hands and I would've given him anything he wanted. There's no way I'm risking getting injured for some company.

You wouldn't be risking injury for a company.

However, since we already know how you feel about defending yourself...

Where do you live?

What kind of car do you drive? Are your computers in an office? Any large things I should bring a truck for?

Looks like a within the law shooting, but I'm sure Pizza Hut has a policy about not carrying weapons.

I'd like to se the bad guy's rap sheet.

I'd like to see how many employees are killed & or injured that deliver pizza for Pizza Hut. they won't even deliver in the part of Dallas I work in, too many robberies, shootings of drivers.

Whether or not the policy is stupid or not is irrelevant. It is the policy, and he did choose to ignore it. So it doesn't seem there are grounds for him to claim discrimination in this case.

That said, I think it was a stupid policy and that guy probably knew that neighborhood was dangerous and chose to ignore it. And I don't blame him.

PapaJohns, Dominos, etc? ALL have the same rule, even cops can't carry firearms if they work there. They also say you can't wear nice jewelry or carry more then a little money.

These are there to protect the drivers AND protect the company. What if a driver shot someone that was not mugging them etc? NOW the pizza place will be the one getting sued, not the poor driver.

It's a poor position to be in, but the short answer is no. PH expects them to carry if they need to, but HAS to fire them because of the policy...

Now the obvious question, why the policy? Well if they didn't they would be encouraging their employee's to carry weapons. Now, even if you could somehow limit the 'only drivers can carry' part, can you imagine the liability?

Driver shoots "mugger" because he thinks his life it threatened. Cops say it was an illegal assault and arrest the driver. "mugger's" family now owns a large stake PH.

See why they *have* to have this policy?

I guess you have never owned a business and had to pay to insure it...

Pizza Hut's just trying to CYA with the gun policy. A driver accidentally discharges their firearm while out on delivery, bullet hits a kid, family sues Pizza Hut. I don't hardly blame them for that policy.

What do you mean, I wouldn't be risking injury for a company? It's their time, not mine, and it's their money, not mine. And trust me...people don't mess with our house. One crackhead had a, shall we say, bad experience after breaking into our house, and I guess he told all his crackhead friends, because this doesn't happen anymore.
