The problem is, so many people think they are God and deserve special treatment. I would NEVER pay for 1 pizza with a $50. It's fvcking inconsiderate.
I worked at a liquor store, we cashed checks, and did Western Unions. Without fail every day jackasses came in trying to break a $100 "I need change!" I would tell some of them "we're very low on smaller bills, it's 5PM, I'm open till 11, if I break your $100 for $20's I won't have change later on" "oh, whatever, that's fine I just need change..." Thet never got it. And Lord forbid they want to buy a 6 pack of beer or something and pay with a $100 where we didn't have any change. They would get so pissy. I'd just point out if they could tell me anywhere, a gas station, a fast food place, anywhere that will break even a $50 let alone a $100.

7-11 won't break a $50 unless you spend a TON of money.
same deal for gas stations. Yet, people expect a Pizza Deliverly dude to have all the change in the world. Almost all deliverly people I see have a freaking sign on top of their car advertising where they work. The last thing I'd want to do is have a ton of cash on me and a sign that says "Pizza Hut" like "hay! rob me!"

I always jsut use a credit card over the phone.
Of course I'm cheap so I actually normally go get it myself since it's not too far away. Will have to clock it next time and see how much gas I'm using to see if it's cheaper to just give them a tip. But it's normally a much longer wait...

For what it's worth, every once in a while, some person would offer a 50 and I *would* have change because they were the 2nd or 3rd of 3 places I was going to on a single delivery. Other times, I would politely ask, "did you tell the person on the phone that you had a $50?" And when they answer "no" I say "Okay, because they're always supposed to write that down. Otherwise, we always carry the exact change for multiples of $20. Here's your pizza, if you want to write a check, I can take that, otherwise, I'll return with more change and you can pay me then." Some customers have said, "I can wait for the pizza until you come back with change," to which I would simply answer, "that's okay, I'd prefer you got your pizza when it was hot. I trust you. Besides (smile) I know where you live." I was always extra polite, because I knew that was the only way to deal with the situation. Therefore, I wanted the customer to be extra happy that I went the extra mile (because then they might give me a few extra bucks in the tip.) But, all the way back to the shop, I'd be cursing that I had to make a special trip, especially if we were busy.

I think what you're missing as well (I haven't read this whole thread) is if he had 35 dollars, and gave you the change and whatnot. He's left with a single 50 dollar bill. Not only does he not have change for you, he won't have have the extra 5 or so dollars change for the next guy until he goes back to the pizzaria.

Pizza delivery dudes Rule!!
On a good friday night I was making upwards of 200 dollard just on tips and commission!
On a good saturday 8 hr shift It was not unusual to make upwards of 500 dollars......
At notime did I have over 20 dollars in change available to me, provided i was making drops in the cash box per company policy!!
If I was robbed I was responsible for what i was robbed of if I was not making my drops!

tallbill = wrong for expecting people to carry change for a $50 when he doesn't even have smaller than that at home. (also cheap for giving $3.50 tip for making 2 round trips to his house, is $7 really going to bankrupt you?)

This might already have been said, didn't read through the whole topic, but last time I ordered from Domino's, I noticed on their box in smallish print, "Please note: Our drivers carry less than $25 with them".

Just in response to Spidey (and anyone else who might have issues with this), who claims that all these 'delivery scumbags' (to paraphrase) use the "scam" of happening to find some more change, did it ever occur to you that they could be giving you change for someone else's pizza in the hopes that they won't need it on their next delivery? And then you don't tip 'em at all?

I think it's been well established that Spidey and Tallbill are inconsiderate douches who care nothing for what others think or feel. So they will doubtless ignore you.
I can understand if the OP is from a small town or something and isn't accustomed to city life. But yeah, pizza delivery guys get robbed all the time. My gf's aunt/uncle own a pizza store in a predominantly Mexican area (I'm not saying that all predominant Mexican areas are ghetto, but at least the ones I've been to here in So Cal are). Their drivers have been robbed many times and never carry more than $20.
