i have worked at dominos pizza for over 5 years. started when i was 16, and i just turned 21...
i normally just manage, but i deliver from time to time as well.

it all depends on the area, but an average tip is $2. anything over $2 is good, anything under $2 is bad. this all changes of course if it's a huge order :p

the thing that sucks, is that in our delivery area, there is this one ultra-rich neighborhood and it's the furthest area away from the store that we deliver to. it's a good 15 min drive each way.. and the rich people are usually pretty cheap with their tips. it's kinda weird when you get better tips delivering to a trailer park than you do to a million dollar house.

Well, good to know that my family's a good bunch of good tippers...I still remember the one time I screwed up the tip at college: I didn't know they charged a buck for delivery already, since it's usually free at home, and then ontop of that, I miscalculated something, and I ended up tipping the guy 7 or 8 bucks on a 20 dollar pizza. :p ah well, at least I made someone's evening. or hour.

Not necessarily.

Just an example: I know a couple, they would rather wear a sweatshirt in the winter in they're house then turning up the heat....

Of course it's a generalization but I know from experience.

You know "a couple" and that gives you the right to generalize for the rest of them?

I've grown up the son of wealthy parents. My community has an average house value of $800,000 or more. Most of my friends and classmates had families with total income well into the six figures. And you know what? The vast majority are warm-hearted, generous individuals with great amounts of contributions to the community and to charities.

So much for your theory.

BTW, I know one guy named "ndee" who likes to generalize.
All guys named "ndee" are irrational louts with no critical thinking skills. QED.

people generalize all the time. yourself have probably made a lot of generalization without knowing it. no need to gang up on him.

I'm a pizza delivery guy for Lou Malnati's, a local Chicago area deep dish chain. For the most part our customers are very generous. Consider this, our large pizzas average $18 + $2 delivery charge (of which we get $1.25 for gas/maintenence). On top of this, our customers typically tip an additional $3-$5 per order! I probably average $4.50 cash in my pocket, per delivery. This is in addition to our $5 hourly wage. :p On most days this comes out to nearly $15 an hour after taxes + free food! Yes, I have been stiffed, but this is extremely rare. Oh and in case anyone cares, I delivery in the NW suburbs of Chicago! Good luck on the new job. ( love my job! :D )

Damn, looks like I need to deliver some pizzas! :)

Edit:
Not that that's a generalization or anything

I wear sweatshirts in the Winter to save money. Only stupid people would pay to heat an entire house during the winter just so they can wear shorts. Of course it depends where you live. If you're in florida, then big deal. If you live in Wisconsin (like me) and it gets to 0F, then we keep our house at like 65 and just put a sweatshirt on instead of cranking the heat to like 75-85. You waste tons of money that way.

sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesh dude. That was just an example! Get over it. I know some other dude, and another girl who are like that. It was just an example, I also know really "warm-hearted and generous individuals" who are rich.

Official apology to all the rich people here: I know not ALL rich people are greedy, but my experience is that money doesn't matter so much to the not-so rich people.

our store, drivers get $5.15/hr, plus $1.15 per delivery from the store to cover gas/maintenance. customers need to understand though, that the money we pay drivers for each delivery isn't a substitute for a tip. it's just to pay them to get to your house and back. the tip is what they get to keep in their pocket.

It's not like I want to run around in shorts, but I prefer a T-Shirt at home. And if it's REALLY cold, I would rather turn up the heat, instead of wearing a sweat shirt.

Exactly, the rich are rich usually b/c they are tight a$$es with their money and are not very giving to others.....I'm generalizing of course but ndee has the idea.

You're not going to get rich by jipping the delivery guy of money.

I would say a better correlation to being rich is education level.
I disagree. How many wealthy teachers and professors do you know?
Exactly, there aren't any.
You must not know very many professors. If you are a good professor, you make a lot of money. A LOT. I know because my dad is a professor.

Hey, if i see something stupid, i call it stupid. I'm not going to coddle somebody just because they're mentally handicapped. I would hope that if i make a mistake or say something stupid, somebody would correct me.

:) I also do the pizza thing as a side job... (look at the nic.. been doing it as a side job for 17 years, except for 3 years when I finished another bachelor's degree, during which time it was my only job)

Anyway,
1. tossing the 7 cent tip (or nickel as I used to get years ago when our most common order was 14.95) can be done. It takes a little acting, but be really pleasant about it... say something like insisting they keep the change "no, you keep the 5 cents.. my tips are my income and I have to declare them for tax purposes... a really small tip like that just makes more work for me without much benefit." But, again, be pleasant about it!

2. You're a fan of any team and any sport, or whatever the customer seems to be doing at the moment.
a) on two consecutive deliveries, I acted like I wasn't as concerned with them paying instantly as I was with the football game. Guy comes to door, dressed in Buffalo Bills clothing... "whoooo hooooo, go Bills!" Watch the game over his shoulder and cheer for whichever team they're rooting for "Great stop.... whata tackle!"
Tip = $5. Next house.... Miami Dolphins fans.... Go dolphins! Whooo! Tip = 5$.
b) I mentioned "or whatever the customer seems to be doing"... hotel room, female under covers in background... male, with pants obviously just tossed on... "bad timing with the delivery, sorry we got here so fast..." wink wink "Keep the change"

3. Affluent neighborhoods = lower tip, almost as a rule. Screw them, they're deliveries instantly become low priority. If customers tip well, reward them with deliveries in less than 10 minutes. (Large cheese and roni to bad tipper? (most common order) Here, give me that one, I'll take it to so and so... they tip well. Cook another one for Mr Bad Tipper)

4. Nothing sucks more than delivering a $200 or more order, waiting at a door for 10 minutes at a company or someplace while they look for the person in charge, then they stiff you on the tip. You return to the shop, and everyone wants a slice of the 20 tip they assume you received.

And lastly, to end this too long of a post... $10 per hour + keep all tips, company car - no costs to self to deliver. :p
