Pioneer or Toshiba 16x DVD-ROM?

I have the pioneer DVD-106S drive and I love it. The slot load is a neat feature and has no problems reading any cds I throw at it.

I've heard nothing but good things about the Pioneer. I've got the slot-load and I'll 3rd that notion.

I've got a 106s too. I love the slot. Screw trays! Can't say anything about the Toshiba because I've never used or read about them.

Same here.

For the most part I like the Pioneer but I have one BIG complaint. It does not allow you to set the speed. That is something I absolutely must have. So I can not recommend it. On the other hand I have had tons of problems with Toshiba's.

Facts comparing these two,

1. Toshiba is the superior CD-ROM performer of the two because it's rated at 48x compare to Pioneer's 40x.
2. Toshiba is the better digital audio extractor of the two, averaging nearly 23x. The Pioneer is locked at 16x.
3. Toshiba is the quieter of the two.
4. Toshiba reads sub-channel data and is the best reader for CloneCD. Pioneer does not support sub-channel reading.
5. Pioneer is the faster of the two in playback/encode DVD movies, Toshiba locked at 2-4x in movie playback, very slow for ripping purposes.
6. Pioneer has a cool slot load, Toshiba doesn't have headphone jack and volumn control on the bezel.

If slot load and DVD ripping doesnt matter to you, go with the Toshiba by all means. With that said, I have both DVD-ROMs and I've used them a lot to know which is the better. There is no perfect DVD-ROM in the market, you really have to split hairs and find out what's important to you, simply going with the most popular vote is NOT the way to purchase the best DVD-ROM for yourself.

I like my 12x Toshiba a lot better than my old 10x Pioneer.

The Pioneer was soooooo loud, and didn't read CDR/RW discs as well.

So I'd get the 16x Toshiba based on that, though I've never personally used either 16x drive.

<< many programs let you select speeds... just use those. >>

The drive actually has to support the speeds. The Pioneer does not.

The only problems you might have with it would be with using 3.5" CDs, but they're not all that common so it's not much of an issue.

Again nobody mentioned RCE1-hackability.

That's one thing to find out _before_ buying, and not when you get this cool anime disc and then find out it's region 4 and unplayable.

Well that's targetting at very small percentage of DVD-ROM users in the world, and if the anime is actually cool enough and famous enough, they'd made it all-regions anyway.

I just got the new Tohsiba 16x DVD drive, and it works great! it reads normal CD's faster then my other CDROM drive i used to have 48x

and its silent while watching a movie

i had the same decision a few weeks back, im glad i got the toshiba

Yup.

I hate the tray too. I ripped one off not long ago..

So in other words, media that happens to be stored on a dvd can be read at the full 16x, just not a dvd movie? That's BS. On the companies part I mean.

I'm glad I got the pioneer.

Lite-On....all the way.

I love mine...and the DAE is better than both of your current choices.

Check out this quote from Storagereview....which has it as thier TOP choice....

<< In CDSpeed99, the LTD163 turns in the quickest audio extraction we've ever seen from a CAV reader with 48X speeds at the outer edge of our test disc. This leads to an average rate of 36X, outracing the next competitor by a whopping 47%! For those feeding their burners in on-the-fly audio copying, the Lite-On's minimum rates of 22X mean easy disc-to-disc burns on even 24X Zone CLV writers. Remember, even 24X burners begin writing at 16X, allowing plenty of headroom for the LTD163 to feed such writes. CDSpeed99 reports perfect extraction quality as well as support for accurate streaming. >>

<< We've recently commenced testing DAE quality with a 2nd set of discs: two identical audio CDs with different surface qualities. One is brand new and scratch-free while the 2nd is moderately scratched from years of normal wear. With these discs, the LTD163 does show some slowdown with the scratched version as seen in the screenshot below. However, reported extraction quality remains perfect. >>

And it's very silent ....

I hope this helps....
