Pioneer or Toshiba 16x DVD-ROM?

<<So in other words, media that happens to be stored on a dvd can be read at the full 16x, just not a dvd movie? That's BS. On the companies part I mean.>>

The Toshiba is capable of reading full speed on DVD media, in fact it reads up to 15.7x on DVD data disks. But since you only need 1x to playback a DVD movie, they just turned the playback speed down to 2-4x to relief the drive, I guess. But yea, I wish it can read the DVD movies at maximum speed.

<<I'm glad I got the pioneer.>>

Pioneer's DVD movie playback speed starts at 4.9x and reaches a lackluster maximum of 11.3x, an average of 8.6x. That comes far short than the claimed 16x max. So, are you still glad? Im unimpressed by either the Pioneer or the Toshiba in movie playback speed. The only drive that's capable of playback movies at the claimed 16x max is the Lite-On, but then it's loud as heck when reading full speed and can't handle scratched and dirty CDs.

I have the Liteon 16x(LTD-163) and it is really nice, and cheap.

I also have the toshiba 16x. It is very quiet, and fast.

I also have a 6x pioneer, it is a solid performer and I have used it for over 2 years in various systems.

out of those 2, go for the toshiba, unless you do lots of copies and rips.

Personally, though, get the liteon 16x

I just finished fixing up a friends computer with a pioneer 16x DVD in it. Never lagged when I was watching a dvd and to me it seemed very quiet, I couldn't hear it.

I have the ever-popular slot-load DVD106S.. it didn't become popular for just no reason... it's a wonderful drive.. quiet, and fast, excellent unit !

I just bought a new Pioneer 500M and it reads CDR really well (not the fastest though, reads @ avg. 32x). BUT when it comes to DAE, it's around 35x! However, it's not so quiet and tray loading is not really smooth. The reading speed of DVD ROM/DVD Video is like the old 116 model. Not much faster.

Well, yes I'm still happy. My new Sony 16x was ripping at 2.0x, so an average of 8 will be just fine. That'll take under 15:00 to rip a DVD. I can live with that I think.

You can accept Pioneer underperforming but not Toshiba? Is this bias or what? The fact remains, if the Pioneer is capable of reading DVD data disks at up to 15x(which is quite satisfactory), there is no reason why it shouldn't read movies at the same speed. That applies to Toshiba too, neither one of them is a good DVD movie ripper, Pioneer just happen to come out ahead, but still unacceptable, if I bought a 16x max drive I'd expect it to do 16x max, not 11.3x. Heh... at least I an swallow the fact that Toshiba admits in the specifications that it only reads movies at 2-4x, Pioneer never said in the specs that the maximum movie playback speed will be 11x not 16x.

I've used the Lite-On in systems I built, and am happy with the performance; however, it is freakin LOUD. I heard somewhere that there is a firmware upgrade that helps fix this? Don't know if its true.

Well, no. Don't read me wrong here LXi. I'm not biased at all. It's just that it's the Pioneer I just purchased, so I HAVE to live with it, you know? Actually, seeing how my only use for it is DVD ripping, I'm happy I bought that one out of the two, but I didn't know about the lite-on.

And to be honest, I still don't fully trust lite-on. I've had two cd-rom's of theirs, and both died after a year or so. Just a personal thing.

True, if ripping movies is a main use of the DVD-ROM, then yea, the Pioneer will be the better buy of the two, I can see where you're coming from.

choice c: Lite-On. DAE at 50X (that's 10X over the rated speed). DVD at 20 MB/s. Not too freaking shabby.

edit: that's real world performance, by the way.

so which of the three drives(pioneer, liteon, or toshiba) is the best for dvd ripping alone as that will be the sole purpose of me getting one..

<<choice c: Lite-On. DAE at 50X (that's 10X over the rated speed).>>

Correction: 2x over the rated speed.

Toshiba: 2-4x. Pioneer: 5-11x. Lite-On: 6-16x. The choice is pretty clear.
