Actually I think it's the other way around. Pink Floyd is one entity.

Pink Floyd is (whatever).
The members of Pink Floyd are (whatever).
Whatever. But how can that entity be a lyrical genius? Somebody had to write them, and it wasn't an entity! :p

Either that or my sig :)

Heh, see my sig :)

Also, the lyrics in your sig are awesome too... I used to use them as a random quote (webpage, other sigs) from time to time :)

(seemed to me most of Water's songs were whining about his daddy dieing in WWII. Hell, listen to "the final cut")

Still one of the all time great bands IMO!

Most of his songs were about Syd Barrett and I believe his father died in WWI not WWII.

No, I'm pretty sure it was WWII given his age and the amount of WWII references, imagery, symbolism, etc. in his work.

Yup.

One good example is "When the Tigers Broke Free" (Tiger Tanks)

Yea, that was about Anzio

That is where his father died, correct?

I don't know if this is a parody thread, or if it's just sracasitc, or if you really mean it.

But "Pink Floyd" lyrics aren't that great. With their music the lyrics are ok, but on their own they aren't all that impressive.

Here are some better lyrics for your consideration-

Oh I'd rather go and journey where the diamond crest is flowing and
Run across the valley beneath the sacred mountain and
Wander through the forest
Where the trees have leaves of prisms and break the light in colors
That no one knows the names of

And when it's time I'll go and wait beside a legendary fountain
Till I see your form reflected in it's clear and jewelled waters
And if you think I'm ready
You may lead me to the chasm where the rivers of our vision
Flow into one another

I will want to die beneath the white cascading waters
She may beg, she may plead, she may argue with her logic
And then she'll know the things I learned
That really have no value in the end she will surely know
I wasn't born to follow

and-

My father had a Randall knife
My mother gave it to him
When he went off to WWII
To save us all from ruin
If you've ever held a Randall knife
Then you know my father well
If a better blade was ever made
It was probably forged in hell

My father was a good man
A lawyer by his trade
And only once did I ever see
Him misuse the blade
It almost cut his thumb off
When he took it for a tool
The knife was made for darker things
And you could not bend the rules

He let me take it camping once
On a Boy Scout jamboree
And I broke a half an inch off
Trying to stick it in a tree
I hid it from him for a while
But the knife and he were one
He put it in his bottom drawer
Without a hard word one

There it slept and there it stayed
For twenty some odd years
Sort of like Excalibur
Except waiting for a tear

My father died when I was forty
And I couldn't find a way to cry
Not because I didn't love him
Not because he didn't try
I'd cried for every lesser thing
Whiskey, pain and beauty
But he deserved a better tear
And I was not quite ready

So we took his ashes out to sea
And poured `em off the stern
And threw the roses in the wake
Of everything we'd learned
When we got back to the house
They asked me what I wanted
Not the lawbooks not the watch
I need the things he's haunted

My hand burned for the Randall knife
There in the bottom drawer
And I found a tear for my father's life
And all that it stood for

and-

Come on and tell me what you told my friends
If you think you're brave enough
And I'll show you what a real woman is
Since you think you're hot stuff
You'll bite off more than you can chew
If you get to cute or witty
You better move your feet
If you don't wanna eat
A meal that's called fist city.

I'll see your's and raise you some John Prine!

Sam Stone
©John Prine

Sam Stone came home,
To his wife and family
After serving in the conflict overseas.
And the time that he served,
Had shattered all his nerves,
And left a little shrapnel in his knee.
But the morphine eased the pain,
And the grass grew round his brain,
And gave him all the confidence he lacked,
With a Purple Heart and a monkey on his back.

Chorus:
There's a hole in daddy's arm where all the money goes,
Jesus Christ died for nothin' I suppose.
Little pitchers have big ears,
Don't stop to count the years,
Sweet songs never last too long on broken radios.
Mmm....

Sam Stone's welcome home
Didn't last too long.
He went to work when he'd spent his last dime
And Sammy took to stealing
When he got that empty feeling
For a hundred dollar habit without overtime.
And the gold rolled through his veins
Like a thousand railroad trains,
And eased his mind in the hours that he chose,
While the kids ran around wearin' other peoples' clothes...

Repeat Chorus:

Sam Stone was alone
When he popped his last balloon
Climbing walls while sitting in a chair
Well, he played his last request
While the room smelled just like death
With an overdose hovering in the air
But life had lost its fun
And there was nothing to be done
But trade his house that he bought on the G. I. Bill
For a flag draped casket on a local heroes' hill.

Repeat Chorus

High Hopes

Beyond the horizon of the place we lived when we were young
In a world of magnets and miracles
Our thoughts strayed constantly and without boundary
The ringing of the division bell had begun

Along the Long Road and on down the Causeway
Do they still meet there by the Cut

There was a ragged band that followed our footsteps
Running before time took our dreams away
Leaving the myriad small creatures trying to tie us to the ground
To a life consumed by slow decay

The grass was greener
The light was brighter
With friends surrounded
The nights of wonder

Looking beyond the embers of bridges glowing behind us
To a glimpse of how green it was on the other side
Steps taken forwards but sleepwalking back again
Dragged by force of some inner tide

At a higher altitude with flag unfurled
We reached the dizzy heights of that dreamed of world

Encumbered forever by desire and ambition
There's a hunger still unsatisfied
Our weary eyes still stray to the horizon
Though down this road we've been so many times

The grass was greener
The light was brighter
The taste was sweeter
The nights of wonder
With friends surrounded
The dawn mist growing
The water flowing
The endless river

Forever and ever

My fav....gotten me moving lots of times:

TIME

Ticking away the moments that make up the dull day

You fritter and waste the hours in an off hand way

Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town

Waiting for someone or something to show you the way

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain

You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today

And then one day you find that ten years have got behind you

No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And you run and run to catch up with the sun, but it's sinking

And racing around to come up behind you again

The sun is the same in a relative way, but you're older

Shorter of breath and one day closer to death

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Every year is getting shorter, never seem to find the time

Plans that either come to naught or a half page of scribbled lines

Hanging on in a quiet desperation is the English way

The time is gone the song is over, thought i'd something more to say

"Were" would be OK, too... since Roger Waters left.

Right waters was a liyical genius. Barret was too in his own way. Gilmour is OK and worked very well as a counterbalance to Waters, but on his own leaves something to be desired.

Mother, do you think they?ll drop the bomb?
Mother, do you think they?ll like this song?
Mother, do you think they?ll try to break my balls?
Ooooowaa mother, should I build a wall?

Mother, should I run for president?
Mother, should I trust the government?
Mother, will they put me in the firing line?
Ooooowaa is it just a waste of time?

Hush, my baby. baby, don?t you cry.
Momma?s gonna make all of your nightmares come true.
Momma?s gonna put all of her fears into you.
Momma?s gonna keep you right here under her wing.
She won?t let you fly, but she might let you sing.
Momma?s gonna keep baby cozy and warm.
Oooo babe.
Oooo babe.
Ooo babe, of course momma?s gonna help build a wall.

Mother, do you think she?s good enough,
For me?
Mother, do you think she?s dangerous,
To me?
Mother will she tear your little boy apart?
Ooooowaa mother, will she break my heart?

Hush, my baby. baby, don?t you cry.
Momma?s gonna check out all your girlfriends for you.
Momma won?t let anyone dirty get through.
Momma?s gonna wait up until you get in.
Momma will always find out where you?ve been.
Momma?s gonna keep baby healthy and clean.
Oooo babe.
Oooo babe.
Ooo babe, you?ll always be baby to me.

Mother, did it need to be so high?

but pretty true... hey, it's a dynasty, it's evolved over time is all... They're like, four bands in one...

Actually, while their songs were good, Waters had an obsession with Syd Barrett's fall into madness. Nearly every song from Roger Water's days were about this.

It's sad, actually. And if you read the lyrics, it shows the total ignorance Waters had about the causes of mental illness. The Wall is a perfect example. It blames bad teachers, bad parents, dead parents and concert promoters for what is a chemical illness in the brain.

Syd's decline could possibly be attributed partially to mental illness if it existed in his family but I would have to say that doing 10 hits of acid a day for years kinda did him in. The guy spent over 10 years in a mental institution as a result of his substance abuse. That substance abuse can likely be blamed where Roger blamed it, as from what I have read the acid was abused for recreational purposes. I would also like to point out that have a good friend go completely at totally looney on you would tend to affect your outlook on life and I can understand Rogers obsession with it.

There are quite a few interesting stories out there about Sid, such as playing songs backwards perfectly while he was tripping.

Into the distance, a ribbon of black
Stretched to the point of no turning back
A flight of fancy on a windswept field
Standing alone my senses reeled
A fatal attraction holding me fast, how
Can I escape this irresistible grasp?

Can't keep my eyes from the circling skies
Tongue-tied and twisted Just an earth-bound misfit, I

Ice is forming on the tips of my wings
Unheeded warnings, I thought I thought of everything
No navigator to guide my way home
Unladened, empty and turned to stone
A soul in tension that's learning to fly
Condition grounded but determined to try

Can't keep my eyes from the circling skies
Tongue-tied and twisted just an earth-bound misfit, I

Above the planet on a wing and a prayer,
My grubby halo, a vapour trail in the empty air,
Across the clouds I see my shadow fly
Out of the corner of my watering eye
A dream unthreatened by the morning light
Could blow this soul right through the roof of the night
There's no sensation to compare with this
Suspended animation, A state of bliss

Can't keep my eyes from the circling skies
Tongue-tied and twisted just an earth-bound misfit, I
My fav by them. And after learning to be a pilot, I finally understood what they were saying in the speaking part (strobes, mixture, flaps, transponder, etc).

One of my favorites from Gilmour in recent years:

Out of the blue on the wings of a dove
A messenger comes, with the beating of drums
It's not a message of love

Our childern are born, and we keep them
They must have the right, to live in the light
To be safe from the storm

Out of the blue, with wings on his heels
A messenger comes, bearing regrets
For the time that he steals

But steal it he will, my children's and mine
Against our desires, against all our needs
Our blood spilled like wine

Over and over we call . . . no one hears
And further and further and further we fall
And though we pray that we soon will awake
It is clear, that it's no dream at all
Our lives are at stake

I cannot believe, nor even pretend
That the thunder I hear, will just disappear
And the nightmare will end

So hold back the fire, because this music is true
When all's said and done, the ending will come
From out of the blue

I can't think of any Roger Waters songs off the top of my head that I've actually liked since the floyd days.
But, maybe it's because the first one I thought of - pros and cons of hitchhiking - was horrible enough to block any others out of my mind.

true genius : The Scarecrow by Pink Floyd

The black and green scarecrow as everyone knows
Stood with a bird on his hat and straw everywhere
He didn't care
He stood in a field where barley grows

His head did no thinking
His arms didn't move except when the wind cut up
About his head and mice spun around on the ground
He stood in a field where barley grows

The black and green scarecrow is sadder than me
But now he's resigned to his fate
'Cause life's not unkind
He doesn't mind
He stood in a field where barley grows

Didn't he go insane partly because of all the acid he dropped in conjunction with a myriad of other drugs? That's what I always thought anyways. If I'm right in that, then perhaps bad parents, teachers, etc etc drove him to it?

But yeah

Pink Floyd:Drugs and insanity = George Thorogood:Drinking

Yeah - Sid was a bit weird - but only about as weird as Ozzy. He used to manage to get down my local pub for a pint or two without any problems.

i can't believe nobody has mentioned this song...

Pink Floyd - Echoes

Overhead the albatross hangs motionless upon the air
And deep beneath the rolling waves in labyrinths of coral caves
The echo of a distant tide
Comes willowing across the sand
And everything is green and submarine
And no one showed us to the land
And no one knows the wheres or whys
But something stirs and
Something tries
And starts to climb towards the light
Strangers passing in the street
By chance two separate glances meet
And I am you and what I see is me
And do I take you by the hand
And lead you through the land
And help me understand the best I can
And no one calls us to the land
And no one crosses there alive
And no one speaks
And no one tries
And no one flies around the sun
And now this is the day you fall
Upon my waking eyes
Inviting and inciting me to rise
And through the window in the wall
Comes streamin in on sunlight wings
A million bright ambassadors of morning
And no one sings me lullabies
And no one makes me close my eyes
So I throw the windows wide
And call to you across the sky.

PF - Time and Money are great songs too =D

My favorite is "There's No Way Out Of Here" on his first solo album. I like Roger's Amused to Death album as well.
