"Were" would be OK, too... since Roger Waters left.

zing!

but pretty true... hey, it's a dynasty, it's evolved over time is all... They're like, four bands in one...

Actually, while their songs were good, Waters had an obsession with Syd Barrett's fall into madness. Nearly every song from Roger Water's days were about this.

It's sad, actually. And if you read the lyrics, it shows the total ignorance Waters had about the causes of mental illness. The Wall is a perfect example. It blames bad teachers, bad parents, dead parents and concert promoters for what is a chemical illness in the brain.

Didn't he go insane partly because of all the acid he dropped in conjunction with a myriad of other drugs? That's what I always thought anyways. If I'm right in that, then perhaps bad parents, teachers, etc etc drove him to it?

But yeah

Pink Floyd:Drugs and insanity = George Thorogood:Drinking
Absolutly. He was considered one of the most "prominent psychadelic minds" of the time.
He couldn't handle the loads of drugs and increasing fame brought from a rising band in the hayday of rock n roll.
Social conditions have so much to do with how a person develops they cannot be shrugged off. If someone has a predisposition to have a certain mental illness, the conditions in which they were raised and live in have profound effects on their psyche.

Piegonholing it and saying that he just had a mental illness and factors such as teachers, parents, promoters and the likes had no effect on his mental state is ridiculous.

If they catch you in the backseat trying to pick her locks
They're gonna send you back to mother in a cardboard box
You better RUN!

(seemed to me most of Water's songs were whining about his daddy dieing in WWII. Hell, listen to "the final cut")

Still one of the all time great bands IMO!

"Learning To Fly"

Into the distance, a ribbon of black
Stretched to the point of no turning back
A flight of fancy on a windswept field
Standing alone my senses reeled
A fatal attraction holding me fast, how
Can I escape this irresistible grasp?

Can't keep my eyes from the circling skies
Tongue-tied and twisted Just an earth-bound misfit, I

Ice is forming on the tips of my wings
Unheeded warnings, I thought I thought of everything
No navigator to guide my way home
Unladened, empty and turned to stone
A soul in tension that's learning to fly
Condition grounded but determined to try

Can't keep my eyes from the circling skies
Tongue-tied and twisted just an earth-bound misfit, I

Above the planet on a wing and a prayer,
My grubby halo, a vapour trail in the empty air,
Across the clouds I see my shadow fly
Out of the corner of my watering eye
A dream unthreatened by the morning light
Could blow this soul right through the roof of the night
There's no sensation to compare with this
Suspended animation, A state of bliss

Can't keep my eyes from the circling skies
Tongue-tied and twisted just an earth-bound misfit, I

It wasn't just the barage of drugs that Syd Barrett was doing that contributed to his mental illness.

Syd Barrett was a schizophrenic who was doing INCREDIBLE amounts of acid. The two combined was a big cause for his going crazy. Roger Waters' songs were a lot about Syd, but weren't the only thing they were about. The Wall is only partly based on Syd Barrett unlike Wish You Were Here which was almost exclusively about Syd Barrett.

On another note, I think the Division Bell was a great album.

That's a great documentary on Syd Barrett.

In the space between the heavens
And the corner of some foriegn field
I had a dream

Good bye Max
Goodbye Ma
After the service when your walking slowly to the car
And the silver in her hair shine shines in cold november air
you hear the tolling bells
and touch the silk in your lapels
and as the teardrops rise to meet the comfort of the band
you take her frail hand
and hold on to the dream

A place to stay
Enough to eat
Somewhere old heros shuffle safely down the street
Where you can speak out loud about your doubts and fears
and whats more
No one ever disapears
you never hear there standard issue
kicking in the door
You can relax
on both sides of the track
and maniacs
don't blow holes in bandsmen by remote control.
And everyone has recourse to the law.
No one kills the children anymore.

Night after night
Going round and round my brain.
This dream is driving me insane.
In the corner of some foriegn field the gunner sleeps tonight.
Whats done is done
We cannot write off this final scene.
Take heed of the dream.

Most of his songs were about Syd Barrett and I believe his father died in WWI not WWII.

No, I'm pretty sure it was WWII given his age and the amount of WWII references, imagery, symbolism, etc. in his work.

Yes. The WWI images in The Wall were confusing, but not accurate.

Agreed.
So drugs had nothing to do with it, but the acid did? Acid creates a schizophrenic state. Though social conditioning cannot be shrugged off.

Division Bell is my most favorite of their albums. It seems so much more mature and polished. As much as I like The Wall, I can only take it in small doses. Waters has a tendacy to come off as a 'whiner' to me in many of the albums.
It is interesting how you can listen to some tracks on an album and hear which ones Gilmore was trying to influence and the ones that Waters was trying to influence (most of them before he left Pink Floyd).

Pink Floyd is a band, not a person.

Well I've always had a deep respect
and I mean that most sincere.
The band is just fantastic,
that is REALLY what I think.
Oh, by the way,
Which one's Pink?

:)

Pink isn't well,.. he stayed back at the hotel.

when the tigers broke free

It was just before dawn
One miserable morning in black forty four.
When the forward commander
Was told to sit tight
When he asked that his men be withdrawn.
And the generals gave thanks
As the other ranks held back
The enemy tanks for a while.
And the anzio bridgehead
Was held for the price
Of a few hundred ordinary lives.

And old king george
Sent mother a note
When he heard that father was gone.
It was, I recall,
In the form of a scroll,
With gold leaf and all.
And I found it one day
In a drawer of old photographs, hidden away.
And my eyes still grow damp to remember
His majesty signed
With his own rubber stamp.

It was dark all around.
There was frost in the ground
When the tigers broke free.
And no one survived
From the royal fusiliers company c.
They were all left behind,
Most of them dead,
The rest of them dying.
And thats how the high command
Took my daddy from me.
