Pink Floyd - Goodbye Blue Sky

[Child:] "Look, Mummy. There's an aeroplane up in the sky."
Did, did, did, did you see the frightened ones?
Did, did, did, did you hear the falling bombs?
Did, did, did, did you ever wonder why we had to run for shelter
When the promise of a brave new world
Unfurled beneath a clear blue sky?

Did, did, did, did you see the frightened ones?
Did, did, did, did you hear the falling bombs?
The flames are all long gone
But the pain lingers on

Did, did, did, did you see the frightened ones?
Did, did, did, did you hear the falling bombs?
Did, did, did, did you ever wonder why we had to run for shelter
When the promise of a brave new world
Unfurled beneath a clear blue sky?

Goodbye, blue sky
Goodbye, blue sky
Goodbye
Goodbye

Pink Floyd - If

If I were a swan
I'd be gone
If I were a train
I'd be late
And if I were a good man
I'd talk with you more often than I do

If I were to sleep
I could dream
If I were afraid
I could hide
If I go insane
Please don't put your wires in my brain

If I were the moon
I'd be cool
If I were a rule
I would bend
If I were a good man
I'd understand the spaces between friends

If I were alone
I would cry
And if I were with you
I'd be home and dry
And if I go insane
Will you still let me join in with the game?

If I were a swan
I'd be gone
If I were a train
I'd be late again
If I were a good man
I'd talk with you more often than I do

Pink Floyd - The Gnome

I want to tell you a story
about a little man
if I can
a gnome named Grimble Gromble
and little gnomes stay in their homes
eating, sleeping, drinking their wine
He wore a scarlet tunic
a blue-green hood
it looked quite good
he had a big adventure
admidst the grass
fresh air at last
winding dining biding his time
And then one day hurray
another way for the gnomes to say hurray
Look at the sky, look at the river
isn't it good
look at the sky, look at the river
isn't it good
winding finding places to go

Can you guess the lyricist? ;)
or how about

Pink Floyd - Bike

I've got a bike, you can ride if you like
it's got a basket, a bell that rings
and things to make it look good
I'd give it to you if I could
but I borrowed it
You're the kind of girl
that fits in with my world
I'll give you anything, everything
if you want thing
I've got a cloak, it's a bit of a joke
there's a tear up the front, it's red and black
I've had it for months
if you think it gould look good
then I guess it should
I know a mouse and he hasn't got a house
I don't know why I call him Gerald
He's getting rather old but he's a good mouse
I've got a clan of gingerbread men
here a man, there a man, lots of gingerbread men
take a couple if you wish, they're on the dish
I know a room of musical tune
some wine, some gin, most of them are clockwork
let's go into the other room and make them work

Well I've always had a deep respect
and I mean that most sincere.
The band is just fantastic,
that is REALLY what I think.
Oh, by the way,
Which one's Pink?

:)

LOL. I love that. They make fun of this very ignorance in one of their songs. :D

I know that, but is it wrong to say the band is a lyrical genius? As a group I mean. For example you might say Pink Floyd is a good band, and not PF are a good band.

It's deja-vous all over again, I'm getting flashbacks of another thread on proper english in recent history hehe.

"Pink Floyd are lyrical geniuses."

"Were" would be OK, too... since Roger Waters left.

Actually, while their songs were good, Waters had an obsession with Syd Barrett's fall into madness. Nearly every song from Roger Water's days were about this.

It's sad, actually. And if you read the lyrics, it shows the total ignorance Waters had about the causes of mental illness. The Wall is a perfect example. It blames bad teachers, bad parents, dead parents and concert promoters for what is a chemical illness in the brain.

The lunatic is on the grass
The lunatic is on the grass
Remembering games and daisy chains and laughs
Got to keep the loonies on the path

The lunatic is in the hall
The lunatics are in my hall
The paper holds their folded faces to the floor
And every day the paper boy brings more

And if the dam breaks open many years too soon
And if there is no room upon the hill
And if your head explodes with dark forbodings too
I?ll see you on the dark side of the moon

The lunatic is in my head
The lunatic is in my head
You raise the blade, you make the change
You re-arrange me ?till I?m sane
You lock the door
And throw away the key
There?s someone in my head but it?s not me.

And if the cloud bursts, thunder in your ear
You shout and no one seems to hear
And if the band you?re in starts playing different tunes
I?ll see you on the dark side of the moon

Read my post. Almost every song from the Roger Waters days were about Syd Barrett's fall into severe mental illness. (Barrett was their original lead singer)

It's weird because it's talking about madness.

Barret had a lot more chemicals in his brain than are found in the average composer.
In some respect I think Waters was egocentrically applying the condition of Barret to himself, that's why, I think I relate to the lyrics. I don't know about you but I've definately felt fvcking crazy from time to time and Waters captures it well.
Waters witnessed a man's descent and can't help, in recollection to say, "fvck, I feel the same way all the time, maybe I'm bonkers too." I don't think he's trying to give an explanation for Barret's condition, he's just trying to vocalize what he feels, and I think most of his songs are really about himself and a portion of the human condition.

You gotta be crazy, you gotta have a real need
You gotta sleep on your toes, and when you're on the street
You gotta be able to pick out the easy meat with your eyes
closed
And then moving in silently, down wind and out of sight
You gotta strike when the moment is right without thinking.
And after a while, you can work on points for style
Like the club tie, and the firm handshake
A certain look in the eye, and an easy smile
You have to be trusted by the people that you lie to
So that when they turn their backs on you
You'll get the chance to put the knife in.
You gotta keep one eye looking over your shoulder
You know it's going to get harder, and harder, and harder as you
get older
And in the end you'll pack up, fly down south
Hide your head in the sand
Just another sad old man
All alone and dying of cancer.
And when you loose control, you'll reap the harvest that you've
sown
And as the fear grows, the bad blood slows and turns to stone
And it's too late to loose the weight you used to need to throw
around
So have a good drown, as you go down, alone
Dragged down by the stone.
I gotta admit that I'm a little bit confused
Sometimes it seems to me as if I'm just being used
Gotta stay awake, gotta try and shake off this creeping malaise
If I don't stand my own ground, how can I find my way out of
this maze?
Deaf, dumb, and blind, you just keep on pretending
That everyone's expendable and no-one has a real friend
And it seems to you the thing to do would be to isolate the
winner
And everythings done under the sun
And you believe at heart, everyone's a killer.
Who was born in a house full of pain
Who was trained not to spit in the fan
Who was told what to do by the man
Who was broken by trained personnel
Who was fitted with collar and chain
Who was given a pat on the back
Who was breaking away from the pack
Who was only a stranger at home
Who was ground down in the end
Who was found dead on the phone
Who was dragged down by the stone.

Didn't he go insane partly because of all the acid he dropped in conjunction with a myriad of other drugs? That's what I always thought anyways. If I'm right in that, then perhaps bad parents, teachers, etc etc drove him to it?

But yeah

Pink Floyd:Drugs and insanity = George Thorogood:Drinking

Oh and my fav is:

And you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
And racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way but you're older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death

Either that or my sig :)

When I was a child I caught a fleeting glimpse,
Out of the corner of my eye.
I turned to look but it was gone.
I cannot put my finger on it now.
The child is grown, the dream is gone
