pillows: a haven for filth and dust mites?

After 5 years, 10% of the weight of your pillow is comprised of dust mites and dust mite feces.

Personally, I throw my pillow out every 6 months or so.

edit: or you can get special covers for your pillow and mattress that are impervious to bacteria, fungi, dust mites and dust mite waste products.

I'm gonna order new pillows right now.

Funny thing is though I have pillows on my bed I almost never use them, I just push them to the side.

My current pillow has like.. a pillow cover and then this sealed air filter cover, both are washable. I rotate pillow covers every week and sealed air filter cover every 2 weeks. I wonder what my mite feeces ratio is. Also it's a latex pillow.

I remember a WSJ story that claimed a mattress doubles in weight after a decade from the same materials, along with, I believe, skin and mold.

I'm sure that after 5 years it's more than 10%, so you better throw it away every 6 months also.

I wash my pillows every so often, and I set the wash and dryer setting to antibacterial. If that doesnt kill the buggers than I don't know what will.

i dont have to worry about these things since i use bricks for pillows and sleep on wooden planks

dust mites can also reside in carpets....

I see carpets as a reservoir of filth and bacteria. Carpets are so disgusting. They might look "clean" - but in reality they are choc full of dead cells, dust mites, dust might feces, fungi, bacteria, hair, etc. Wood, stone, polished concrete - any hard surface is a safer, healthier alternative than carpet, surely.

Imagine my surprise when my GF's apartment installed brand new carpets free of charge when she moved in!

Memory Foam pillow FTW!

don't kid yourself, even a synthetic foam pillow will accumulate garbage, bacteria, fungi, skin cells, dust mites, dust mite waste products over time.
