Post the specs or a link to them and the intended use of the computer, and you'll get dozens of responses. :)

It's probably one of their i810 chipset-based micro-tower systems. It has onboard video and sound, no AGP, and like 3 PCI slots total.

Sounds like a typical office bundle to me. You do get a Dimension tower though, not a silly Optiplex. And it is a Dell.

$600 bucks is fine, but don't expect anything to scream. No problems with word processing and email checking, but games and graphic software won't fly. Also think of future expansion. Probably comes with a i810, so if you're planning AGP check first. And they're probably too few PCI slots for anything serious in the future. Think long term and check it out.

Probably the fact that it's a Dell, Pentium III 800MHz, and only $600 is really appealing to you.

I would say spend a smidget more and buy the new Dell Dimension 4100 which offers these specs:

Here's what I priced at $979 for the Dimension 4100, which is an awesome machine (sorry no P3/800 available):
Free Scanner or Printer - Your choice
20GB Ultra ATA Hard Drive (7200 RPM)
64MB 133MHz SDRAM (hoping that your spare RAM is PC133 not PC100?)
Video Ready w/o Monitor (you already own a monitor - this is your biggest savings)
1 Year Next Business Day On-Site Parts and Labor, Years 2 and 3 Parts
Windows Millennium Edition Operating System
16MB ATI Rage 128 Pro (not integrated - so you can upgrade later on at any time when you can afford it)
12X DVD ROM Drive with Software Decoding for Windows ME
SB Live! Value Digital with Music Match Software
harman/kardon Speakers
V.90/56K Telephony Modem for Windows ME- Sound Option
No network card
1-Year DellNet? by MSN® Internet Access Service[add$0]
QuietKey® Keyboard
MS IntelliMouse®

I love the 4100 for it's better case offering much more upgradeability down the road, there is no "integrated" this and that. I'm using my 4100 right now and the funniest thing I like it for is the variable speed fan, it's so quiet (almost whisper quiet). But I do kind of miss the audible fan I heard in my home brew AMD Athlon 650/Antec KS282/Asus K7V system. Sorry for rambling, I'll stop now :)

A friend's K6-2 500 died on him the other night.. he's getting a 1GHz PIII, 256MB PC133, 40GB HD, 32MB ATI Radeon, 3Com 56k+10/100, SB Live! Value, etc etc for about $1800.

I think it was a 19" monitor, too. Once I saw that price I realized how great Dell is, remembering thier excellent support.

Try to get something with decent expansion and graphics and you should be okay. At least 256MB I'd say, but 128 would be "alright".

Well...I paid 890 for a 4100 refurb from Dell:

PIII 800; 30GB HD (7200 RPM), CD-RW, PC-133 (i815 chip set, I believe).

Very happy so far. Sounds like you got a great deal, though.
