I don't think ear piercing is that big of a deal. In Uruguay, it is common practice for the girl to have her ears pierced before she leaves the hospital after being born. I know all my aunts used the same pair of earrings as my grandma, who used the same pair as her mother, etc. Most girl babies will have their ears pierced. It hurts but not for that long. And I think it is different from circumcision in that the ear lobe is not as sensitive as the penis and if the girl wants to reverse the procedure, essentially all she has to do is remove her earrings.

When you get to that point, watch the circumcision video at www.intact.ca. Trust me, you won't feel the same afterwards. You'll want to protect your son, at any cost. I know for a fact that my wife would have left me if I insisted on having it done. Fortunately, I'm as anti-circ as she is. :)

I have seen couples have this fight and it doesn't turn out pretty. Typically the man will feel like the woman doesn't have a say because she doesn't have a penis and doesn't know what its like... and I suppose that is true.

edit: i didnt feel comfortable sharing this second point

Yes and Yes.

My wife is Latin, so it's traditional to pierce your daughters ears at a young age...like a month old. As for circumcision, I'm glad I was circumcized, so I'd pay the same favor to my kid.

The reason men typically have issues leaving their sons intact is that they don't want to admit that anything is wrong with their genitals. If a man admits his circumcision leaves him less than whole, he feels inferior. Not a good feeling. It takes a big man to admit that he has problems and that he was the victim of something horrible, something he couldn't defend himself against. So the circumcision gets passed to his son so the father doesn't have to feel inferior. There's a great article written on this subject. I'll edit this post and add it when I find it.

You're comparing part of the penis with hair? Christ you're deluded.

Congrats. You're happy about missing half the nerves in your penis. I hope you never breed.

What does your "Latin" wife think of circumcision? Ask for it down there and they'll throw you in the looney bin. America and Israel are the only countries that mutilate our boys.

And yeah i'd get my son cut at birth. Anything after is just cruel.

oh i see. and it's ok to do what you want to infants since they won't remember?

how did this child sexual abuse get so ingrained into American culture?

Read the wikipedia entry on circumcision then head over to www.nocirc.org. (Yes, I know I posted this above.)

Yes/Fsck no.

In reality I probably wouldn't want her ears pierced at a young age unless she was one of those babies where it was hard to tell...

I would have preferred to have all of my nerves and all my skin. Its made that way for a reason.

We're born with 32 teeth too, I don't know why we barbarically have four of them removed routinely though. That's like 12.5% less chewing surface area we are MISSING. Who cares if your teeth get crowded, the more the merrier, right?

HeroOfPellinor: No one is going to change your mind about circumcision, nor, at this point, do I think anyone should care. I would hope you wouldn't feel the need to circumcise your son, as it is a traumatic and barbaric practice, but unfortunately for him you probably will feel it's necessary. Have fun with that.

It seems the problems with circumcisions going wrong is when its done at the hospital. How many moyles do you hear of slipping? All they use is a sharp knife and a bit of wine in teh baby's mouth and they're fine 10 minutes later.

you'd think with Americans being relatively educated they would be able to think outside their social conditioning. guess not.

It's part of my culture to have babies circumcised...

Culture is not a good reason to pierce or circumcise. The child's human right to bodily integrity is more important than culture.

Culture: noun; the customary beliefs, social forms, and material traits of a racial, religious, or social group. That practise was wildly accepted and it's a custom. Clearly, you have not been brought up with such customs, but I hope that you respect mine without sounding demeaning or derogatory.

I'm an American, and its customary to cut up babies here. I bucked the trend and protected my son.

All I'm saying is that you should put your children ahead of your customs. If it looks like it hurts, it does. Protect your kids.

You really think that the pain was going to make a difference in your son's life?

You really think that cutting off his foreskin will make a difference in his son's life?

It is part of the culture. So yes i guess so

Does this mean if you have a baby girl you'll get her circumsized as well??
