I remember I used to think that Mourning Doves were owls because of that noise they make

Cool. We had three owls living in a tree next to my work last summer. There are owl boxes on the roof but they move to the trees when it gets too warm. Ground by the tree was littered with remains, and there was a large decrease in the number of rabbits running around.

Cool birds. Don't like the barn owls though, something about how they look weirds me out.. bizarre faces. I guess I have that with quite a few owls.. wonder if that's just me.

Not owls, but I saw some wild turkeys yesterday. I was pretty excited. That was the second time in my life I've seen them, with the other time being in the mountains. I knew we had some in the county, but they're very rare. Speaking of rare, it's been 20 years since I've seen a pheasant. They were never really common, but I'd see them every so often. Too many new McMansions I guess :^/

I've seen lots of wild turkeys in WV and GA. Sometimes dozens at once.

If you like owls, check out ustream.com. I remember some time ago, in Oceanside CA, there were these couples who built an owl shelter high above, and installed webcams inside and outside. So you were able to watch them 24/7, from the time they were born and forward. It was amazing to watch and chat along with others in the room.

Had 3 pheasants right next to my car last Saturday; thinking of raising a few dozen pheasants this spring. Plenty of owls around here; I see them about 20% of the days I spend in the woods. They're my favorite bird to see (with the exception of a pheasant in the direction my shotgun is pointed during pheasant season, and the exception of a big turkey at the receiving end of the shotgun as well.) Had 46 wild turkeys in my inlaws back yard about 2 weeks ago; a few huge Toms that would let you get within a few feet of them & gobble right at you. (Turkeys came down to their feeders during the winter, so they started feeding the wild turkeys.)

We had a huge owl hanging around the area a while back, I was walking my dog, (pit, 63lbs) one night and he swooped down at the dog, about 5 feet away he realized the dog's size and decided to abort, flapping his wings furiously to re-gain altitude, we were both freaked as they glide in silently from behind. The dog quickly lunged vertical for the owl and almost (missed by a foot or so) got it, the dog is pure black, I think Mr. owl misjudged her before getting closer..
