I had one fly about 10 feet in front of me while up in a treestand about 20 feet off the ground. Didn't hear it coming at all, scared the shit out of me.

swooping in your headlights is another one that is quite startling.

They have "fuzzy" feather edges to allow silent flight. They're very cool birds. I've seen a few in my life, but not that many considering how much time I've spent outside.

I had one fly across the road just less than a week ago going into work. It was far enough in front that I had no chance of taking it out. It would suck hitting one, they are the neatest birds out there.

Awesome. I've never seen an owl in person. I did not even know we had any here, but some people here did encounter them. I said "o rly?" when I heard that.

Cool birds. We have a shit-ton of barn owls around here:

Most of the local farms have several "owl boxes" mounted for them as does the local community college campus.

They're great at rodent control on the farms. My only concern is that some of them are big enough to snatch up our smallest "rat dog" and fly away with the little bastard.

We had a barred owl that would hunt over our bird feeder right behind our house one winter. We got to watch him swoop down the catch maybe 3 mice in a row as they came up to grab the bird seed under the feeder. He hung around our house for maybe 2-3 weeks that winter. They really are awesome birds. I've seen quite a few rescue ones up close during local events recently as well.
