Picky eaters - how do you make yourself like food?

I'm a picky eater. I believe that I'm a 'super-taster' (especially with bitter) and food texture make a big difference to me. I dunno why, I actually find it rather annoying.

I am very much a meat and potatoes guy. I really dislike salad, but I would like to be able to eat it because I really don't get enough veggies.

I would also like to be able to drink coffee. I think coffee would be a better alternative to soda, which I drink a lot.

So, how do you re-train yourself to like foods that you don't?

A Supertaster?!? :Q
I'm kinda the same way as you, except I do like coffee. I used to load it up with sugar and cream, but eventually weaned myself off of them. I think getting real cappuccinos helped with that.
No luck on the salad front, though, I can tell if there's a single shred of lettuce in a taco or sub.

Have you tried just making yourself eat it for a while? I dunno, I guess I'll eat just about anything.

Yep, same method as you'd use on a five year old. Force yourself to eat it, and eventually you develop a taste.

So did your parents raise you on mac n cheese and hot dogs?

I am the same way.

There used to be many things I didn't like, but I just forced myself to eat them and eventually I started to like all of them. Now there is very little that I actually dislike and in fact I can't think of anything off the top of my head.

Just keep eating it. I used to hate onions and sauerkraut but like them both now though onions need to be cooked, not raw.

And I didn't like coffee before either. I just tried drinking it more and more and enjoy it now. I found I like it better just black though.

It takes many of us like 5-7 different attempts to develop a "taste" for something that we really don't like.

There will always stuff that you just flat out don't like - for me it's bell peppers and asparagus. But if you will yourself through those first several attempts it gets better.

I don't. If I don't like something, I don't eat it.

I might give it another try if it's been a long time since the last time I tried it, but basically I avoid food I dislike.

I don't really eat vegetables, they are just empty vitamins anyway.

Depends on how much you dislike it. I really hate cilantro and no matter how much I try to convince myself otherwise, its mere presence in food nauseates me.

I know several people with that same hatred and it is something I will never understand. I absolutely love the stuff.

The only vegetable besides corn and onions i'll eat is a pickle. Now I can have diced tomatos and bell peppers in like a bowl of chili, but thats about it. I figure I'll get to like them one day, and right now I'm not in any hurry. And if I die tommorrow without liking salads, then so be it, I'll be dead and won't give a shit anyways.

Homemade salsa cruda with cilantro... mmmmmm.

I've improved a bit by cooking my own meals. Something about knowing exactly what's in the dish, and knowing that all the ingredients are fresh, has helped a lot.

I still can't handle leafy greens, either. It's the texture, not the taste... I hate the feeling in my mouth.

edit:
Multivitamins FTW. My parents shake their heads at my diet, but I'm the healthiest person around.

To some people it tastes very strongly like soap. I can kind of taste it, but it's not that bad unless they go overboard with it in the dish.

Some people instead perceive an unpleasant "soapy" taste and/or a rank smell. This is believed to be a result of an enzyme that changes the way they taste coriander leaves, a genetic trait, but has yet to be fully researched
