Damn that old Honda is clean as hell, looks like you took great care of it.

That old Honda is a 1979 CB750 Limited Edition (10th Year Anniversary Edition to be exact), the first year of the DOHC models. The previous owner repainted the tank and side covers...probably because the old paint was in such bad shape after almost 30 years of wear and tear. The tank is in excellent condition as is the petcock, no rust and the paintjob looks great...although, I hate the color.

I've actually only had it a year and a half and during that time I've been fixing it up and riding it, so yes, I have taken excellent care of it. I've never dropped it but it has seen some road rash over the years...nothing major though from what I've seen...and I've seen just about every square inch of this bike. The frame is original and straight, the motor had a cracked cover on the left side but that was easy to replace. The motor and frame are very close in VIN numbers which is typical of bikes of this era as they didn't match them in those days but I think the motor is original.

It is running a bit rich at the moment so the carbs probably need to have the floats adjusted and the starter doesn't engage every single time but if you let it spin down it always hooks up on the second try...usually it spins the motor up on the first try though, especially when warm. I don't know if it's the starter or the starter clutch. I have a spare starter clutch I bought off ebay but haven't had the time to install it. Those are the only things wrong with it.

I've replaced the exhaust, the headlight and headlight mount, rear fender (it was dented), rear taillight (rust), new clutch, cleaned and rebuilt the carbs, valve job, two new tires, replaced shifter lever and shifter shaft (stripped when I bought it but I didn't know it-that gave me my first of two breakdowns), new starter solenoid (second of my two breakdowns), I've cleaned up most of the engine covers and replaced one that had a crack in it, put in a new battery with battery tender, rebuilt the master cylinder and the front brake caliper along with new pads...I'm probably forgetting some stuff.

It doesn't drip even a single drop of oil...this is from a bike that is almost 30 years old!!! Everything works on it and it is a comfortable cruiser. I also have quite a few spare parts.

It's a great bike, a real piece of history, and I've put a lot of love and hard work into it. I'll miss it, but I honestly don't see myself riding it much now that this sexy young model is in my garage so it's going up for sale. 🙁 The sad thing is some fuck will probably crash it or turn it into a cafe racer...and then crash it.

I rode the SV to work today...and I'm going to ride it again tomorrow. I've already put 100 miles on it in the 2 days I've owned it. 😎

Expensive? I paid $6200 OTD for mine. I thought it was a relative bargain actually.

Well I was looking at SV650SF ABS and those were $7400 MSRP which was part of the reason i went with a Ninja 650R. It's be nice if I could afford a SV since it looks better, performs slightly better and has ABS but that's a large difference from the 650R's $6500msrp and used models costing around $4k.

I kind of wanted ABS but they seem to be in high demand so I just bought this one. I think the ABS naked is only $500 more so I'd be looking at $6700 OTD...if they had one that is.

Actually, the S model is cheaper than the naked if you can believe that.

The S is the old model with half fairings, the SF is the new one with full and starts at $6900 for the Non ABS and $7400 for the ABS. I got my 2007 Ninja 650R for mid $5K OTD which is a better deal imo than a 2007 SV650 sine the full fairing and more upright position are important for touring and freeway riding and iclement weather since in the midwest we don't get the best riding conditions all year.

How's the power delivery on that engine? Is it pretty peaky? Meaning do you have to really get those revs up to get in the powerband?

That's one thing I like about the SV, it has a pretty linear torque curve so it's not like suddenly it wakes up above a certain rpm range. Although, you have to be above 4k rpms to really get into the powerband of this engine.

It's a parallel twin but it's been tuned to be happiest from 4000-9000rpm so it's pretty good. It's got a little more than a 10% deficit on hp and torque so the performance isn't as good but i find it somewhat easier to ride.

The SV is a V Twin so it has excellent torque characteristics (a little better than the 650R and a lot better than the FZ6) and I really wished I could afford one but $2000 is a lot of money.

Poor fella...so you mean to say, you have been going through a mid-age crisis since birth? Now I'll really have to call in my colleagues on this one! You never know....next thing you know you would be posting a pic of you with a Lotus in your driveway or something....

OH DOH! NVM
BTW-What the hell is a harely?

My mistake...I should have explained, it's something very much like this

WTH did you think it meant? 😛

I ride an '03 SV650, absolutely in love with it but I agree with you on the seat. The wife has it worse than me sitting up on that tail. Corbin and Sargent both make great seats, and I am told you can special order them with an inch or so of additional height which sounds great to me. There is also a nifty trick with replacing the footpegs with Buell pegs that drop an inch or so lower to give you a bit more legroom. I don't know if you'll need that but at 6' 5" she is a tight fit for me.

+1 on the SVRiders board, great info and nice people there.

For lots of goodies on one page be sure to hit the SV page at http://holeshot.com/, I haven't used any of their stuff yet but I have heard good things about their slip-ons.

Put some frame sliders on that sexy beast soon would be my only firm recommendation, that way when some tool knocks it over in the parking lot you don't end up with a cracked radiator.

What I meant is that I've always liked things that go fast. I've owned fast cars for over 10 years between the age of 24 and 34.

So, are you deliberately trying to be an asshole or are you just giving me a hard time? 😛

Yeah, that's on my short list of things to do right away.

I joined SVRiders about two months ago.

BTW-I'm 5'11" so the seat height is perfect as it is.

Had these on my '04 SVS. Much better than the ones offered by Suzuki.

Yeah, I was looking at those actually. The parking lot at work is concrete so there's not much chance of it sinking in and falling over there or in my garage. I always leave it in gear with the bar to the left and the handlebars locked to lessen the chance of it falling over. The only other thing to worry about is someone hitting it I guess.

The bike is nice and rugged looking, much better that the sport bikes with all the plastic imo. What kind of performance are people getting out of these?

I've read 0-60 in 4 seconds flat and 1/4 mile times in 11 seconds. Handling and braking are incredible, it loves to carve corners. 😀

Aftermarket you can get some electronics, and exhaust kits. Some people swear by a process known as "desnorkeling" the air cleaner, although it doesn't seem to do much besides make the bike noisier. The bike doesn't really need any more power to be a great bike, which is good because there is not a lot more to be had from that engine.

Bang for the buck if you want to make the bike a more serious track bike usually means swapping on GSX-R forks and rear shock to improve the handling.

Stock they dyno around 70 horse, with full aftermarket exhaust, power commander, K&N, etc... they get up to around 75-80. Skip the mods and put that money in the gas tank. ; )

Edit-Sorry for the a-hole comment.

I was looking at those on the tubes the other day.
How does it compare to the V-Storm 650 (also caught my eye)?
I have a 83 nighthawk 550 that I have been enjoying since August, but I'm keeping my eyes open for an upgrade sometime. I do like the idea of more of a sport-touring kinda bike, and I like the naked bike style.

The DL650 V-Strom is the same engine, and I think mostly the same chassis/brakes/etc... It will ride a lot different sitting taller, having frame mounted fairing, different suspension and all, but the engine is just as brilliant for an adventure bike as for a standard.

The SV650 and DL650 V-Strom share the same engine. The DL has different cams and is setup for better low end torque. the SV breaths better and has more pull at higher revs. Other than that they have nothing else in common.

The DL650 has the same frame as the DL1000 (engine is related to the SV1000). The DL's sit much higher. You will need at least a 32in inseam to flat foot the DL without lowering it.

The DL650 has an all-day comfortable riding position (more upright than a "naked" SV650), a larger fuel capacity/range. If you have any plans to ride/tour long distances you want to consider the DL over the SV.

I sold my '04 SV650S last Sept for moving expenses, and bought a DL650 yesterday (after much searching). I know of what I speak. 🙂

You can find a lot of info on the DL650 and DL1000 here:

Yeah, at 5'11" I can not quite flat foot the V-Strom and I really like the aggressive street fighter look of the SV650 so I went with it. It fits me perfectly. I've been riding it all week and already have 150 miles on it. It's hard to keep it below 6,000 rpms though...I've hit 7,000 rpms a couple times already briefly. I can't wait to really open her up. 😎

A friend of mine had the V-Strom 1000 and he liked that bike quite a bit but he's since moved on to a BMW and now he has a Ducati GT1000.

And here I thought I'd be fine since I'm 5'11"
Guess I just need to go try one out. I think either would probably be much snappier and probably more comfortable than my old Nighthawk :-D

Get a test ride if you can. The DL650 and SV650 are so good, I would be surprised if you came away from a tests ride without wanting one or the other.

I don't think it would have been a problem honestly and it had nothing to do with the reason I chose the SV. I just liked the aggressive nature of the SV without having to deal with the shortcomings of a full on sport bike.

The biggest difference will be in the brakes and the chassis although the broad rev band and linear power delivery will make either bike a night and day difference to your old Nighthawk.

Go test ride them and if you have any other questions please feel free to ask!
