OK, this is pretty basic...trying to help a buddy out but not used to looking for systems, pre-built, in this price range...so I figured I'd ask you guys.

He is on a uber tight budget, yeah I'm sure you've heard that before, and wants to get a pre-built system. He's tight on money, doesn't need anything fancy...just something reliable for putting hobby pictures on, emailing, etc. I'd say he probably doesn't want to spend more than $500...yeah it's that tight.

His current system, older than George Washington himself, crashed recently (hardware failure after it's third ice age)...so I figure he's best off dealing with his crumby monitor and no speakers than trying to buy a "package" for that price. So let's focus on just a tower? Let me know what you think...I'm going to dig around but I haven't even looked at systems in a dog's age.

Any advice on a reasonable and reliable system in this price range?
Ultimately, reliability is key...compared to what he had, a mouse running in a cage to power the CPU would be an improvement. He isn't a computer techie guy, and lives a distance from me...so I don't want him to run into any issues that I'd have to ultimately solve :)

Lemme know boys and girls...thanks!

*bump*

Thanks for the link, just saw it now...don't think he'll be able to get that by tonight.
Anyone else have any suggestions?

He has a crappy monitor, keyboard, and mouse right now that will get him by...with such a limited budget, I'd sooner roll it all into a tower.

Well this is what my buddy wound up grabbing today on an impulse buy.
HP A6000N.

Just released recently I believe, haven't had a lot of time to look into the components...maybe some of you can give me a quick run down if you are familiar with them. I'll dig around some on it. He hasn't opened the box yet, so he can return it, but it looks fairly decent for the price (but I admit I don't have any current background on the quality of the particular components).
