Physix on the cheap?

Just because a game is good doesn't mean the Physx effects are. Physx right now is not worth the expense of a separate minimum $100 card which is what you need to get good Physx. Physx still doesn't do anything meaningful like they promised years ago. If you already have an Nvidia card, Physx is a great addition which costs you nothing extra but buying another card just for it doesn't make sense unless you really want the Physx effects. It's just not worth the extra $100.

And the fact that Metro 2033 is totally playable with CPU PhysX (I couldn't see an impact in performance enabling or disabling PhysX features) and the fact that Unreal 3 only has one map with GPU PhysX makes it even more pointless than already is. A cheap and used GT 240 for less than $40.00 might do the trick for PhysX, specially for Batman AA.

Nvidia should consider it as part of their new marketing (since the actual PhysX effects usually suck):

"Hey! It'll look pretty sitting next to your other card!"


Seriously, I have a GTX 460 and a GT240 that is my backup card. Won't even bother trying it out since everything I have seen from it isn't worthwhile (and that is without taking any fps hit, if it does, then even less reason to use it).

Mafia II looks like it has the best PhysX so far. But when you shoot columns and these huge rock chunks fall on the floor, it looks cheezy. It would look great if all different size of chunks came flying off all the way down to dust but that would probably run at 3fps on todays hardware. The capes flowing in the wind do look go though. So does the glass shattering.

Seems like PhysX could be good but maybe 5 or 10 years from now when there is real power behind it.
